Networking Materials to Prepare in Advance

• Linkedin.com Profile

– Dynamic content resume based in the cloud.– Site is becoming popular with recruiters.– May become the standard way to submit your resume to an employer.– Can serve as the “drill down” for your 2 page resume.

• Networking Card

– Like a business card, but communicates your personal contact information.– You should always use a networking card, whether you’re employed or not.– Your professional network is your property, not your employer’s.– Exploring new job opportunities is a highly confidential activity.

• Simplified Elevator Pitch

– 10 to 30 second “sound bite” which serves as a personal introduction and helps toinitiate a conversation which can result in a referral.

Networking Materials to Prepare in Advance (Continued)

• Establish Linkedin.com Profile – Minimum Content

– Background information – name, school, degree, etc.– Contact information – personal email address and mobile number.– Head shot (not just for actors anymore!) - read one page article on head shots*.– Current and past jobs, activities & volunteering projects regardless of relevance.– Skills list – be sure to include soft skills in addition to technical.– Obtain recommendations that would be relevant for a first job.

• Additional Recommendations

– Review and understand Linkedin.com Settings:

» Profile/Privacy Controls/Activity Broadcast – turn off when doing maintenance.

– Use Public Profile URL – it’s free, example: www.linkedin.com/in/jastudent– Limit of 3 visible activities (likes, follows, comments, shares and posts) per day.– Linkedin.com profile scoring of “advanced” or better.

*ITC+C Boot Camp additional information is provided to assist with completing this activity.

• Prepare Networking Card*

– Name, degree/major, anticipated graduation date, phone, email and LinkedInpublic URL.

• An Elevator Pitch is less than 250 words and contains:

– The following seven elements:

» Industry Relevance, Communication, Leadership, Problem Solving, Expertise,Pedigree and Impact.

– A question to help start a conversation or to request help with a referral.

• Since college students have limited work experience their elevator pitch should focuson three of the seven elements which will frame their strengths:

– Industry Relevance – coursework, internships/externships and appropriateextracurricular activities (student government, professional fraternities/sororitiesand clubs).

– Communication – business communication, oral presentations, writing skills andcreating presentations.

– Problem Solving – quantitative skills (math and statistics), financial (accountingand finance), technical (applications, tools and platforms) and analytical (systemdesign, process reengineering, business case solution).

“I appreciate your participating in today’s IT Competition as it has provided me with a valuablelearning experience. I’m majoring in CIS with an emphasis in computer security and forensicsand anticipate graduating in Spring Quarter. I enjoy challenges and found performing theforensics analysis and complying with legal requirements to be very challenging. I developed theoutline and structure for our team’s oral presentation. I want to pursue a career in computersecurity and forensics. Would you have any recommendations for me on how I could start mycareer in this area of work or could you recommend a few companies to me that I should targetfor getting my career started?”

– Shows industry relevance (IT Competition and coursework), communication(developed oral presentation outline and structure) and problem solving (likeschallenging problems).

I found performing the forensics analysis in our case to be fascinating and Iam excited about the prospect of pursuing a career in computer security and forensics. Also, Ideveloped the outline and structure for our team’s oral presentation. How did you get started inyour area of work?”

Putting It All Together – How to Connect

• Finding and Obtaining a Job Offer is a Sales Process:

– The Sales Process is a series of steps, the completion of each step is a close andthe completion of the process is the big close which completes the sale.

– The IT Competition presents you with an opportunity to complete (close) the firststep of the Job Offer/Sales Process.

– “Hiring is based on trust which is why it pays to network. A major outplacementfirm claims that 77 percent of its clients land by networking.” – Ed Pospesil,Chairman and Founder of TENG (Technology Executives Networking Group).

• Steps in the Networking Process:

1. The Introduction:

Use the appropriate elevator pitch depending if it is warm or cold. Be sure to have good eye contact with the person with whom you’re

speaking. If a cold introduction try to ask a secondary question at the end of the initial

conversation in order to attempt to obtain a referral. Be careful to not wear out your welcome.

2. Exchange Contact Information:

Provide a networking card only when requested. Request contact information in return.

3. Follow Up after the IT Competition:

Use the contact information to send a request to connect on Linkedin.com. Customize the request to connect message into a personalized Thank You

note.

One Final Comment…..

“Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.”
