ResponseWare page: 1 ResponseWare ResponseWare This guide has been written for students wanting to use TurningTechnologies ResponseWare in sessions that are using the TurningPoint Electronic Voting System (EVS). ResponseWare is a web-based service the enables you to partake in TurningPoint EVS sessions by voting on your own smartphone or web-enabled device. Voting via ResponseWare is an alternative to using a Radio Frequency TurningPoint EVS handset. EVS Handsets can be borrowed from the Library. ResponseWare client apps are available for Apple iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad), Android and BlackBerry. Alternatively the service can be used from any web-enabled device that has a web browser that supports AJAX, JavaScript™ and HTTP requests (e.g. Internet Explorer® 7 or higher, Firefox® 2 or higher, Opera™ 9 or higher, Netscape® 8 or higher, Safari® 3 or higher) ResponseWare will work with any type of network connectivity but you are advised to connect to the University of Surrey wi-fi network in order to avoid using your 3G allowance or incurring charges. areEnsure Wi-Fi is switched on and under Choose a Network... tap UOS_Secure

Enter your University username and password

Tap Accept when asked to verify the *.surrey.ac.uk certificate

Open a web browser and open any webpage to check you are connected e.g. http://www.surrey.ac.uk.

If you are able to load a webpage continue to the next section to install the ResponseWare App. If you are unable to load a webpage please follow these steps:

Open the Settings app and tap Wi-Fi

Tap the blue and white arrow button next to UOS_SECURE

Connect to Wi-Fi using Android Device

Navigate to the homescreen on your deivce and tap the menu button on your Adroid device and select Settings

Ensure Wi-Fi is turned on by tapping the tick box next to Wi-Fi

areSelect UOS_SECURE from the list of Wi-Fi networks

In the pop-up window in the Identity field enter your University username and your University password in the Password field

Click Connect

Open a web browser and open any webpage to check you are connected e.g. http://www.surrey.ac.uk.

If you are able to load a webpage continue to the next section to install the ResponseWare App. If you are unable to load a webpage please follow these steps:

If you own an iOS device (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) you can install the free ResponseWare app on your device. Once installed you simply enter the Session ID your lecturer will give you in the session and then you can respond in the session. Your device will require network connectivity

The easiest way to obtain the ResponseWare app is via the Apple App Store. Most owners of an iOS device will be familiar with this process but it is illustrated here to aid the understanding of teaching staff who are not familiar with such devices.

Installing the ResponseWare on an iOS device

Click on the App Store icon

Search the term Responseware

Click on the word Free

Click on Install

Authenticate into your iTunes account

Using ResponseWare on an iOS deviceYou use the ResponseWare App on your iOS device in the following way:

Click on the ResponseWare icon

Type in the Session ID you have been given and click Join

You then have the opportunity to identify yourself:

TIPThe “Your Account” part of the app is only applicable to a model where the student pays for their access to the service (as is the model at some U.S. institutions). It is not used at the University of Surrey.

[assuming students are encouraged to respond anonymously] Leave the name and data fields blank, click on Done

The questions polled in the session show on the your device:

Click on your chosen response option

TIPAs with the RF handsets you can change your vote at any stage whilst the polling is open.

When the session presenter closes the polling (or the countdown timer reaches its end) the polling results are shown on your device:

Those with an Android mobile device can install and use a specific version of the app.

Simply search for ‘responseware’ on the Android Market – https://market.android.com

The Android version of the app works in the same manner as the iOS version.

TIPIf the presenter is using the TurningPoint correct answer indicator please be aware that the indicator does not display in ResponseWare.

Those with a BlackBerry mobile device can install and use a specific version of the app.

Currently the BlackBerry ResponseWare App is not listed on the Blackberry Marketplace but instead can be downloaded directly from:

http://www.surrey.ac.uk/rw/

The BlackBerry version of the app works in the same manner as the

iOS version.

Those who either do not have a device compatible with the ResponseWare apps or do not want to install the app can opt to use ResponseWare Web if they have a web connected device.

Open a web browser

Navigate to www.rwpoll.com

Enter the Session ID given to you
