ATLANTA’SPREMIER SERVICES

The holidays are always atime for family, friends, andrelationships. It’s time to makeour holiday lists, create deli-cious feasts, dress for holidayparties, plan our futures, watch our sports and all of thegreat commercials that go with them. This season is a timeof giving! Sometimes we talk a good game, but when we sitback do we truly practice what we preach? As the old say-ing goes “Talk is cheap!” It’s time for some action! Thisyear has been packed with emotions. We’ve lost manyangels from the soldiers in Iraq to the wonderful faces weenjoyed watching like Coretta Scott King, Ed Bradley andGerald Levert. My thoughts and prayers go out to familiesof all of those we’ve lost both far and near. These angelsremind us to value our family and friends. I value you andam excited to share my thoughts through the pages of thismagazine. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity toshare some of my favorite restaurants, shows, charities andevents with you. Thank you for enjoying CONNECT andbeing the reason for its growth. To show my appreciation, Iam proud to say that CONNECT will give away some won-derful gifts throughout this quarter.

We decided this issue is truly going to be about giving. Not only are we going to give you great information aboutrestaurants, shopping, travel and business but we are alsoproviding great charities that need your help. We’ve gotsome wonderful tickets to give away to great shows at theFox theatre such as the Delta International Series andAlvin Ailey. It doesn’t end there, for the romantic howabout a romantic dinner package, or some pampering. Ifthat doesn’t excite you how would you like to lie in the sunon the beautiful island of the Bahamas? That’s right, CON-NECT is sending one of our lucky friends on a wonderfultrip to the beautiful islands of the Bahamas!

These gifts are just our way of saying “We appreciate youfor CONNECT-ing with us”

Your Connection,

Tanjuria

Relax, Relate, Release

Believe it or not, there’s much more toyoga than difficult pretzel poses and alittle deep breathing. If incorporated

into a weekly workout routine, it can pro-vide energy, help relieve stress and even aidin releasing toxins in the body.

“The physical form of yoga allows thebody to cleanse by eliminating toxins andcirculating blood flow throughout the body,”says Tiffany Campbell, yoga instructor atYoga Hive (yogahive.com). “This combatsstress, fatigue, anxiety and of course, achesand pains.”

An ancient mind-body wellness modalitythat teaches participants to balance physi-cally, emotionally, mentally and spiritually,it’s no surprise that yoga has swept thecountry over the past few years. More thansimply another fitness fad, people who regu-larly practice the ancient routine find thatthey not only lose weight, but move easier

and think more clearly. “It’s important to relax and release men-

tal stress because if the mind is constantlygoing, eventually it will burn out,” warnsCampbell, who has been teaching yoga forseven years. “You wouldn’t leave your carrunning all day without turning it off. In thesame way, you have to allow the mind tohave some time off. That’s what yoga teach-es you— how to quiet the mind.”

There are many different types of yoga, some focusing on love and devotion, othersfocusing on the use of meditation. No mat-ter what form is selected, Campbell suggestscoupling it with a cardiovascular workout.

“Ideally you would practice yoga at leastthree days a week for at least an hour andcardio the other four days for at least 30minutes,” she says. “However, you can findthe combination that works best for you.”

WELLNESS F I T N E S S

So you’re finally fully committed to losing weight. You’ve got your game plan and your cute new workout gear— now all you need is a gym. But finding a

gym to join can be a little tedious; not every gym is right foreveryone. With that in mind, here are a few tips to consid-er before you decide to join a fitness club.

Check the Equipment. Take a good look at the machines, and even use some. If they grind or seem unstable it’s a signthat the equipment is not being properly maintained andthe gym may not be worth your time or money.

Single Out the Service. A good gym should offer you a newprogram every 4-6 weeks and a fitness assessment every 8-12 weeks. Someone should also always be around to answerwhatever questions you may have.

Determine What Exercises Are Important.. If you’re notinto bodybuilding, stay away from gyms that specificallycater to that form of workout--they are typically easy toidentify because they offer no aerobic classes, have tons ofweights and very few bikes or treadmills.

Be Price Conscious. The price of a gym should match thequality of the equipment, service and instructors. Take agood look at the gyms in your area and do comparisonsbefore settling on one.

Check these tax tips beforegiving to a charity

• Make sure the organization is tax-exempt under section 501 (c)(3) of thetax code. You can check an organiza-tion’s status at sites like guidestar.org.

• For contributions under $250 makesure to get a receipt. For donationslarger than $250 you need to get aletter from the organization acknowl-edging the gift and confirming it was-n’t made in exchange for somethingvaluable—a canceled check is notenough.

• Check the rules for non-cash dona-tions. Congress recently changed therules for vehicle donations. If the char-ity uses the vehicle in its programs ormake substantial improvements to it,you can still deduct its full value. But ifthe charity sells the car, your deduc-

Tax TimeTax season is a headache for most and

perhaps the most dreaded time of year. Butfiling taxes doesn’t have to be the sign ananeurism. There are a number of thingsthat can do to help make dealing with theIRS much easier.

Why Should You Keep Records?Having organized records make it easier

and less frustrating for you to file your taxreturn, it also enables you to explain anitem on your return that the IRS mightquestion, and could prevent you from hav-ing to pay additional taxes andpenalties for unsubstantiateditems.

What Records Should YouKeep?Specific records you shouldkeep include:• Form W-2 and 1099• Bank statements• Brokerage and mutual fundstatements

• Form K-1 (for partnerships)• Sales slips• Invoices• Credit card receipts• Canceled checks or other proof of pay-

ment• Home purchase and sales agreements,

closing statements, and insurancerecords

How Long Should I Keep Records?Although legally you need only keep tax

records for three years from the date youfiled the related income taxreturn, you should keep acopy of your actual taxreturns, W-2s, 1099s, etc.,indefinitely. The IRSdestroys original tax returnsafter three years, and you oryour heirs may need infor-mation from the returns atsome point, or you may needto prove your earnings forSocial Security purposes.
