Please join your fellow colleagues on October 11, 2018 for the annual meeting of the association. The meeting will take place at The Baci Grill in Cromwell with registration starting at 10am with coffee and pastry.

The Annual meeting with committee reports, the election of officers and directors and the approval of our operating budget beginning at 10:30 am.

The program selected will be, “Master Planning for Cemeteries to Embrace the Rising Rate of Cremation.” Our presenter is Mitch Rose, President of The Woodlawn Cemetery and Crematory located in the Bronx, New York. Mitch is also the current President of the Cremation Association of North America (CANA) and Vice President of Education on the Board of Directors for the International Cemetery Cremation Funeral Association (ICCFA). This meeting and program are a must to attend and one not to be missed!

CEMETERY STORIESCypress Cemetery, Old Saybrook and the National Register of Historic Places

We’ve written about Old Saybrook’s Cypress Cemetery in the past. Now, we’re proud to announce that CCA member Cypress is the newest cemeteries in Connecticut to be named to the National Register of Historic Places. The old burying ground portion of the cemetery came into being in 1635/36 when it was established as the cemetery for the newly settled Saybrook Colony, a settlement intended to cater to “English gentlemen”.

This Cemetery Story ties into October’s An-nual Meeting presentation because the Na-

tional Registration nomination for Cypress is based upon the outstanding funerary art existing in the old burying ground section of the 10 acre cemetery located on Saybrook Point at the mouth of the Connecticut River. Although the funerary art “collection” at Woodlawn Cemetery is much larger than that of Cypress, the collection at Cypress is unique in Connecticut be-cause of the significant presence of two “schools” of tombstone carving. One school comes from the artisans who carved tombstones in the Massachusetts Bay Colony while the other school comes from the artisans who carved tombstones in the Connecticut River Valley.

Boston tombstones are commonly carved from slate, a rock type that is plentiful in eastern Massachusetts, while Connecticut River valley tombstones are carved from the softer red sandstone commonly available throughout the central valley of Connecticut. As we are all aware, the slate stones are much more durable and weather New England winters quite well while the sandstone tablets are much more prone to weathering and damage. Those of us overseeing historical cemeteries where the red sandstone tablets are common are well aware of the sometimes costly efforts to save those stones from further decay and repair those that do suffer significant weathering.

Boston carvers were said to work in collaboratives, so not many of the names of those artists are commonly known. The names of the prominent and noteworthy early Connecticut carv-ers are known, however. Early, simple tombstones carved by James Stanclift exist along with tombstones carved by Thomas Johnson I and his son and grandson Thomas Johnson II and III. Other well known early carvers include Ebenezer Drake and John Johnson, not related to the aforementioned Johnsons. Their styles differed in the type of fonts used, the use of all capital letters versus upper and lower case, the design of the winged “death heads” and the varying features of the faces carved at the top. The side borders of some were quite elabo-rately carved while others were simple. All of these distinctive features lead to identification of the artisans who carved these tombstones.

Our historic cemeteries are like museums with objects of art that we can appreciate from up close and touch. Not many museums where one can witness and experience art work like that!

Rose currently serves as the President of the Cremation Association of North Amer-ica (CANA) and as Vice President of Education on the Board of Directors for the International Cemetery Cremation Funeral Association (ICCFA). He also serves on the New York State Association of Cemeteries (NYSAC) Board as Chair of the Supplier Committee. His degrees include a B.S. in Business Ad-ministration from University of Central Florida and an A.S. in ornamental hor-ticulture from Santa Fe Community College. One of the largest cemeteries in the country, Woodlawn is a National Historic Landmark with “the largest and finest collection of funerary art in the country”.

InformatIon & EducatIon. Connecticut Cemetery Association (CCA) membership gives each member the opportunity to acquire knowledge and additional insight into our chosen profession. At many of our meetings we have speakers who give presentations on timely subjects that affect our industry. In addition, our members have hundreds of years of collective experience in the cemetery industry. They have confronted almost every challenge and are willing to share their insights with you. If you have a problem, one of us has probably experienced it before and would be happy to help you to find a solution.

Every year, in early December, the New England Cemetery Association (NECA) sponsors a three-day Management Seminar. If you are a full member (Bronze, Silver, or Gold) of CCA, then you are automatically a member of NECA and are entitled to attend this educational seminar. At this annual seminar, experts from many fields will discuss a variety of topics from the latest developments in grounds control and maintenance to cremation and administrative issues. The list of topics is long, but we can safely assume that there will be a number of subjects that will be of interest to you. Topics are chosen based on member suggestions.

LEgIsLatIvE IssuEs. Every year there are bills that come before our state legislature that may affect the cemetery industry. Board of Director member, J H Torrance Downes, will keep his eye on legislative issues and let us know if there is something of concern.

suppLIErs. At many of our meetings, you will have an opportunity to meet representatives from companies that supply equipment, products, and services that we use on a daily basis. Suppliers are a valuable asset. They inform us of the latest developments in their product lines and help us to keep abreast of the most relevant trends. We encourage you to develop a relationship with the suppliers who are members of and support the efforts of the CCA.

nEtworkIng. The Social/Networking Hour at each of our meetings will give you an opportunity to catch up with old friends and to make new friends in a casual atmosphere of camaraderie.
