CIBA is pleased to welcome out first class of international exchange students. These eight students, who
have already made huge contributions to our quest for more international mindedness, were formally
welcomed in a flag ceremony on Friday, September 12th. Each student presented CIBA with the flag of
his/her country, received a U.S. flag in return, and spoke for a few minutes about his or her country. Our
students are Alfredo Campos from Merida, Mexico, Anna Fruh from Wuppertal, Germany, Simone
Hayer from Freudenstadt, Germany, Qirui (Richard/Ricky) Li from Chengdu, China, Martina Morchio
from Milano, Italy, Julia Urban, from Darscheid, Germany, Jacqueline Valota from Aracaju, Brazil and
Wei (Vicky) Zhou from Chengdu, China.
Without the generosity of the many families who are hosting these lovely young people for the academic
year, our international experiences everyday right here at CIBA would not be possible. All of our partner
organization are not-for-profit, which meant that by statute, they cannot pay families to host. The U.S.
government provides a modest tax break for host families, who provide a bed and three meals a day to
our visiting students. This ensures that students are placed with families who are deeply interested in the
international experience on both sides of the exchange. All members of the CIBA family whose lives
have been enriched through the presence of these wonderful exchange students would like to thank our
host families.

Field Study in Italy
APRIL 2015
Mrs. Kent and Mr. Spiller are
organizing a field study to Italy.
This field study experience will
focus on art and as with all of our
travel study experiences we will
strive to promote international
understanding and respect for
other cultures, to expand our
knowledge about culture and
history and the basis for different
values and beliefs, as well as to
develop the interpersonal skills
necessary to navigate a new envi-
ronment with confidence, maturi-
ty and flexibility. This experience
is open to all CIBA juniors and
seniors and will take place during
our April vacation.

(PAC) has secured two dates for fund-
raisers at the Barnes & Noble

day December 13 from 11:00 a.m.—

dren, time day’s purchases. Save the

to make a difference. All funds raised
go to support the PAC activities that
benefit CIBA students.
CIBA Adult
IB Learner of the Month
Dr. Ryan Campbell was nominated by a
majority of his colleagues and students
as the adult who best exemplifies the
IB attribute of “Inquirer.” Dr. Campbell
was lauded “because he is constantly
seeking ways to improve himself as an
educator” and because “he is incredibly
curious about the world and about the
many different cultures that comprise
it, and he exudes this energy and en-
thusiasm around his students, inspiring
and exciting them.” Each month, stu-
dents and staff at CIBA have the op-
portunity to nominate an adult learner
of the month.
Fifteen principals and a representative
for the from the Provincial Ministry of
Education from the Province of Jilin in
Northeast China visited CIBA on
Thursday September 18 to learn about
Magnet Schools and how American
schools develop international perspec-
tives. This is the second delegation of
educational leaders to visit CIBA this
academic year.

FEATURED CIBA ALUM OF THE MONTH
Adam Talbot „08
Georgetown University Class of 2012
Senior Writer, Human Rights Campaign
Here's a dirty secret: CIBA really helps you cheat the system. Going to school here convinces you that
you can do anything you want to do, learn anything you want to learn, think anyway you want to think. It
teaches you to lose your fear of trying, and once you're no longer
afraid of trying, you're a million miles ahead of everyone else.
When I left to go to college, CIBA had already taught me how to think and how to write. And because I already knew how to do
those things, I coasted in class and had a ton of spare time for my
hobbies. I taught myself how to be a speechwriter while I was tak-
ing a full course load and juggling a couple of internships. Because of
that opportunity, finding a job after college was just the next step,
rather than the next challenge.
Today I work as a speechwriter at the nation's leading lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization. We're winning historic victories and making unprecedented progress—and
my work has taken me from Los Angeles, California to Hattiesburg,
Mississippi. It's not easy work in the slightest. Every day is a chal-
lenge, and every challenge is rewarding. But here's what I'll never
forget: everything I'm doing today I learned how to do at CIBA just
a few short years ago.

Extra Academic Help Extra Academic Help
CIBA offers students a number of ways to
obtain extra academic assistance. To better
prepare our students for college, CIBA has
introduced a mandatory junior class called
“College Research & Writing,” taught by Mr.
Nystrom. The class focuses upon the criti-
cal research and writing skills necessary for
success in college and beyond. As with last
year, Ms. Lynn Morin, our wonderful CIBA
tutor, is available to assist students during their
lunches and study halls Mondays through Thurs-
days from 9:30—3:30. Students should see Ms.
Morin or their study hall teacher for a pass.
Twelfth grade student Maxx Everson has orga-
nized a group of top CIBA students to offer
Peer Tutoring during lunches and study halls.
Students who wish to avail themselves of this
great opportunity are asked to contact Maxx or
look for the list of tutors, subjects and times as
soon as it becomes available,
