First Generation College Student
History of Historically Black Colleges and Universities
Before the Civil War, higher education for African American students was virtually nonexistent. The few who did receive schooling often studied in informal and sometimes hostile settings. Some were forced to teach themselves entirely.
Most HBCUs were established after the American Civil War with the intention of serving the black community.
Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, defines an HBCU as: “…any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans, and that is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association determined by the Secretary [of Education] to be a reliable authority as to the quality of training offered or is, according to such an agency or association, making reasonable progress toward accreditation.”
HBCU
There are 106 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the United States, including public and private institutions, community and four-year institutions, medical and law schools.

What is a Hispanic-Serving Institution?
A Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) is defined as an institution of higher education that –
1) Is an eligible institution
2) Has an enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students that is at least 25 percent Hispanic students at the end of the award year immediately preceding the date of application.
HSI
409 institutions are considered an HSI.
