It was a spectacular night, in fact. On Wednesday June 4, the local Lions Club met for their usual dinner meeting….except there were three unusual things about the evening. One, it was the last one of this Lions year…..so no more until the Fall. Second, we had a bevy of out-of-town Lions join us….five from Sault Ste. Marie, one from Elliot Lake and two from Sudbury. And, best of all, (no offence to our visitors) we inducted seven, yes seven, new members! As we all know, service clubs all over North America are suf- fering from the same problem….increased difficulty attract- ing new people to become members and join in our volunteer efforts. People seem so busy these days; families take up a lot of time, working and commuting do too, and all the clubs are competing for the same warm bodies willing to take up the fight against whatever scourge challenges them. Lots of good causes…lots of ‘fight the good fight’! All worth- while and admirable. So, when a club like ours can have seven join in one night, with an eighth having joined the previous month – it is cause for much celebration. Naturally, all credit must go to our Membership Chair, Lion Dan McCarty, who is DYNO-MITE! So, a great Lions welcome to Ryan Maki (who joined us a month ago), Donna Bond, Steve Richardson, David Browley, Carol Haukaas, Carmel Kennedy, John Kennedy, and last, but not least, Ruth McCarty, who finally gave in! We had several guests join in support that night also, and who knows, perhaps they will consider joining us too! As we always do at this time of year, we said goodbye to our last year’s slate of officers and installed a fresh new bunch…well, some are fresh. We always like to have a good line- up of our tried and true Lions on board each year too. Outgoing President Jack Priest handed over his gavel without a murmur of protest to incoming Lion President Robert Kerr (he’s been there, done that before), who will have the sup- port of 1st Vice-President Lion Gerry Rahn, 2nd V.P. Lion Debra Gowlett, who has already proved to be indispen-sable on so many levels! Lion Bruce Campbell continues onin the Treasurer’s role, thank goodness! Our esteemed TailTwister (he who levies spare coin from members to pay foradministration costs for the club by devious and trickstermeans) remains our one and only Lion Ted Lumley.

So, other than an informal celebratory Barbeque to be heldone fine day in July, we will meet for business and dinnermeetings again in September. We will, however, carry on withour jobs of Highway Clean-up, Pet Cemetery, Pancake break-fasts, Popcorn booth, and of course, the Purina Walk for DogGuides, to continue raising money.

And, in keeping with our International motto “WE SERVE”,we will continue to financially support our charities, bothlocal and elsewhere, and be available always for requests forhelp from local individuals in need.Friday, June 27

North Shore Communities PresentSummer Swim Program

FOR THE FOURTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR, The Towns ofThessalon and Bruce Mines and the Townships of PlummerAdditional, Johnson and St. Joseph are working together toprovide a Summer Swim Program for children across theNorth Shore. The program has successfully given North Shorechildren the opportunity to take swim lessons in the Saultthat will move them up one proficiency level by providingtransportation to the John Rhodes Community Pool.

This year the North Shore Swim Program will be for 9 days atthe beginning of August, from Tuesday to Friday, August 5 –August 8 and Monday to Friday, August11 – August15 from10:30am – 11:15 am.

A bus will leave Thessalon at 8:30 am and pick up children ineach community (the turn – off for St. Joseph Island regis-trants). Parents will be notified about pick-up points and re-turn times prior to the program. Children are taken toBellevue Park for a picnic and play time after the swim lesson. The Program is for children 4 years and older.

The Cost of the program is $150/child, and the child mustregister for all 9 days. This is a break-even program that cov-ers the bus and lesson costs for the 9 swim lessons. No morethan 40 registrants will be accepted and registration will be ona first come, first served basis. The registration deadline is Fri-day, June 28. The John Rhodes Pool has confirmed that the 9days are sufficient time to complete a level of swim lessons.

There will be supervisors provided through Summer Studentprograms and volunteers from all of the municipalities. Chil-dren will be supervised at all times e.g. in the Pool, changerooms, picnic areas and bus. Parents may be welcome to ridethe bus with their children, however, space is limited so if youwish to ride along, please register early and let your municipaloffice know.

Registration forms are available at Municipal Offices andsome schools. For more information, please call the Munici-pal Office of a participating township.
