impact

Thanks to the generosity of

community members like you,

IPEI’s positive impact continues to

expand throughout the Ithaca City

School District. We are fortunate

to live in a community that values

education and participation —

financial support as well as

through sharing of skills,

experiences, and knowledge.

By giving teachers the chance

to offer extraordinary

opportunities for our students,

we add real value to our schools

and give students educational and

cultural experiences that leave

a lasting impression. We invite you

to read on and see what you

have helped us accomplish.

inspireI am hoping that we can continue

to find ways to support this type

of project for our children, as it

allowed every child to grow from

the enrichment experience. The

Scientist in Residence program

also helped students to make

valuable connections between

science and the other content

areas; language arts, math, social

studies, and geography were

integrated within each activity.

It was a win-win for all.

grant programsconnecting students and teachers with the world beyond each school building is our core mission. IPEI infuses exceptional community resources into the classrooms to enhance the educational experiences of all students. We support teachers with great ideas and help them make the curriculum come alive.

Teacher Grants with Community PartnersGrants given directly to teachers are an excellent way to introduce students to our community’s many wonderful resources. awards up to $1500 each are made to teach-ers with creative classroom project proposals that involve a community partner and link with new York state learning standards.

teacher Grants were awarded to 27 teachers totaling $35,000 impacting 2400 students directly (some more than once) and over 4000 indirectly. these grants were funded by our adult spelling bee, the charles E. treman, Jr., teacher Grant fund, and by gifts from community members. treman grants were selected by the teacher Grant review committee based on how well the proposal matched the program’s criteria.

a community Partner is any individual, business, organization, or col-lege department interested in working with a teacher on a classroom project or activity. We welcome potential community partners with ideas of how to work with teachers and students.

Red and Gold GrantsGrants of up to $500 each are allocated for proposals that strengthen and enrich the school experience but fall outside the teacher Grants criteria. they may be awarded to teachers, students, parents, or com-munity members. consideration will be given to all requests, but prior-ity may be given to those with lasting impact, affecting larger numbers of students, increasing effectiveness of learning, and/or connecting students to the community. durable materials or equipment purchased with grant funds become property of Icsd. sixty red and Gold Grants were made totaling $25,000.

Community Collaboration GrantsIPEI granted funds to four community organizations that are collaborating with the Icsd: the nYs coalition for healthy school food, Way2Go at cooperative Extension, Ithaca college Project look sharp, and family reading Partnership.

sat together at long tables each with

their lump of clay. annemarie Zwack,

artist and community partner for the

project, and teacher Jocelyn lutter had

given them a task: create a stamp to

be used for making impressions on the

Watershed Wall. The stamp could reflect

something about them or nature. Some

students started working immediately;

some sat quietly, prodding and pushing

the clay. one student, a junior, recalled

his harlem Renaissance Social Studies

unit at DeWitt. he was inspired by the

music, images, and style of that time and

decided to use those influences to create

his stamp. his middle school classroom

funded by an IPEI Teacher Grant, and

had blossomed during yet another IPEI

collaborationKids Discover the Trail!; a collaboration between IPEI, Icsd, and the discovery trail with its eight member organizations; involved 100% of elementary school students in its sixth year of operation. Each discovery trail site is linked with one of our elementary grades intro-ducing all Pre-K–Grade 5 students and their teachers to the world-class experts and collections.

two classrooms from different schools take their field trips together and then develop follow-up activities. the goal is for students from different neighborhoods to get to know each other before they all meet in middle school using the shared curricular experience of Kids Discover the Trail!

KDT! books are provided to all students at all grade levels year to encourage literacy and reinforce the Kids Discover the Trail! curriculum. book titles included Pre-K: Shapes or Look, Look, Look; Kindergarten: Library Lion; 1st: Digging Up Dinosaurs; 2nd: Our Earth: Clean Energy; 3rd: Wildflowers: A Peterson’s First Guide; 4th: The Secret School; 5th: The Birds of Sapsucker Woods, and Everest: The Climb. our thanks to donors who supported the book purchases including: the Johnson Museum of art, an anonymous donor, friends of the library, Ian alberta Memorial fund, social service league, ann Marie bleach in memory of her brother, and first book foundation. Icsd teachers and discovery trail educators choose the books and the family reading Partnership assists with ordering and delivery.

the KDT! collaboration is funded through the generosity of local insti-tutions, foundations, businesses and individuals, including the overall Program sponsor for 2009 and 2010: borgWarner Morse tEc.

Pre-Kindergarteners explore animals and shapes in the art collec-tion at herbert f. Johnson Museum of art at cornell.

Kindergarteners find out about books about friendship and family at the tompkins county Public library.

First Graders study the science of dinosaurs at the Museum of the Earth at PrI, and about the scientific process by examining fossils of the largest animals ever to have lived on earth.

Second Graders explore climate change and energy at the sciencenter through demonstrations and hands-on activities that address the need for alternative energy sources.

affiliatesFine Arts Booster Groupthe Ithaca community fine arts booster Group (fabG) believes the arts — music, visual art, drama and dance — are a central part of every child’s education. booster volunteers support and celebrate existing district programs and staff, and we advocate for increased student access, participation, and equity in arts programs.

• awarding 31 arts grants totaling $11,613, serving 3,804 students including Mini-Grants, and the Program and opportunity funds.

• recycling and refurbishing musical instruments (Play It again, Ithaca) made available 17 additional instruments and music equipment.

• Printing all middle and high school performance programs (9,305 copies for 31 events on 50 dates).

• collaborating to share school arts news and needs, and connecting opportunities such as recycling cornell’s school of art architecture and Planning supplies for the district art and technology teachers.

• Managing distribution of memorial funds from the community foundation’s strebel community Enrichment fund and from IPEI’s carol J. buckley scholarship fund.

• facilitating the creation of the Watershed Wall, a community collaboration with the city of Ithaca and district art teachers resulting in a public art mural of student work donated to the city.

• starting the arts alive fund to support extra-curricular arts.

Code Red Roboticsthe Ithaca high code red robotics team shares IPEI’s nonprofit status through an affiliate agreement. Interest in the team is growing (20 new members, an increase of 50%). after designing and building the robot in six weeks, the team participated in regional competitions at rochester Institute of technology and drexel university, receiving recognition for innovative design (Innovation in control award) and sportsmanship (Gracious Professionalism award).

to expand its outreach, the team started a fIrst Junior lego team with students in the beverly J. Martin school Extended day program. team members mentored the elementary students in all aspects of the project and plan to expand the program. code red also hosted tech-nology programs for children from cornell’s family housing, painted at stewart Park, and did fundraising for camp Good days.

IPEI provides a way for local technology organizations and fans of robotics to fund the team. code red is fortunate to have support of the board of Education, the district administration, and Ithaca high as well as sponsors: Kionix, cbord, vfW Post 961, Ithaco space systems, autodesk, borgWarner Morse tEc, 104 contractors, and the Park foundation.

communityInitiativesIPEI’s name includes the word “initiative” to underscore our emphasis on creativity and responsiveness, community involvement, and an enhanced educational experience. these activities are most often implemented by community organizations and/or the school district, although Kids Discover the Trail! is an example of an initiative which has needed IPEI’s continuing leadership. In keeping with our mission of integrating Ithaca’s extensive community resources into the education of our district’s students, IPEI strives to make connections whenever possible. this includes convening various groups and individuals inside and outside the district to engage them when new ideas are proposed. We encourage members of the community to talk with us about their ideas.

TransportationIPEI works with the Icsd transportation Working Group that includes current and retired teachers, Pta and school board representa-tives, and staff from the tompkins county Youth services, cornell cooperative Extension’s Way2Go, and the department of social services. transportation liaisons were recruited for each Icsd school and provided with resources about available transportation options, and to provide the group with data about the needs of students, staff, and families. a pilot was initiated with retired educators volunteering to drive students and families.

Adult Spelling BeeIn addition to being good fun and intellectually stimulating, our 11th annual bee raised $10,000 for IPEI’s grant programs. Individuals, orga-nizations, and businesses from all parts of the community form three-person teams, pay entry fees, study (sometimes!), and meet in the high school gym for two hours to enjoy the challenge of spelling. the south hill spellicans were champions of the 2009 bee that was sponsored by tompkins trust company and broadcast live on WnYY by cayuga radio Group. raffle prizes included tickets to the hangar theatre’s production of the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and gift cards from www.donorschoose.org to support teacher classroom needs.

IPEI Roundtable IPEI convenes a monthly meeting of representatives of organizations that are actively supportive of the Icsd. the purpose is to offer time for collaboration, focused discussions on pertinent issues, and sharing district and community group news. all are welcome to attend.

thanks!I wish you could see all the wonderful grant reports spread out across the entire surface of a table!

Every year, teachers report on how their grant project went and how the funds were used. They share stories of students’ wonder and excitement; appreciations for the expertise of project community partners; and photos of happy, engaged children. Teachers convey to us their heartfelt thanks for the chance to turn their best ideas into reality, enhance instruction, and connect with the community. These thanks belong to you, our donors and supporters, who make it all possible!

Strong public schools, motivated and inspired teachers, well-prepared and enthusiastic students: each of these IPEI priorities is critically important to our community and future. The generosity of our donors allows teachers to offer our kids extraordinary, eureka! moments, in and out of the classroom.

I invite you to join in the growing excitement — and help meet pressing needs as evidenced by increased requests for assistance — by making a gift to IPEI. your support plays a vital role in opening up new possibilities for ICSD teachers and all 6,000 students. We are counting on you!

many thanks,

Terry Byrnes, President
