ROTARY INTERNATIONAL

RON D. BURTONPresident, 2013-14

August 2013

To Participants of EEMA 2013:

I am pleased to extend greetings to my fellow Rotarians atten-

ding the 61st European, East Mediterranean and African (EEMA)

Conference in Rome, Italy. I send my best wishes for a producti-

ve and meaningful conference.

I encourage you to use this conference to inspire youth, get

them engaged, share with them the gift that every one of you

has been given to be a positive force for change in our world.

By your example, show them the kind of potential that each of

them has through Rotary. Help them chart their own courses in

Rotary, so that each one of them will fi nd the thing in Rotary that

speaks to them — so that they will open their eyes and their

hearts to the power of Rotary service and be inspired.

Your dedication to the Youth Exchange program helps to attract

younger members into Rotary — helping today’s Youth Exchan-

ge students become tomorrow’s Rotarians. The most important

thing we can do for the future of Rotary is make sure that these

youth are engaged. If we really want to take Rotary service for-

ward, then we must make sure that every single Youth Exchan-

ge student has the same feeling about Rotary that each one of

you here has today.

The moment is here; the time is now. As Youth Exchange stu-

dents begin their journey in Rotary, it is up to Rotarians to lead

them as we Engage Rotary, Change Lives.

My best wishes for a successful conference.

LUCIANO DI MARTINOEEMA Vice President, 2012-14

Conference Chairman

Welcome to Italy, dear friends

in Youth Exchange. Welcome to

Rome, the eternal city.

Welcome on behalf of all Italian

Rotarians , who are honored and proud of hosting you on the

occasion of the 61st EEMA Conference. This is an event where

RYEOs from all over the world meet again to exchange ideas,

knowledge, experiences, diffi culties, issues and proposals. A

constructive dialogue that will provide further contributions for

the improvement of one of the most fascinating and positive

programs of Rotary International: the Youth Exchange Program,

aimed at laying the foundations for peace among peoples from

an early age, by putting into contact young people coming from

countries that are diff erent in terms of culture, way of living, so-

cial and school organization, language, and often religion, too.

That is why the title chosen for this conference is: “CONNECTING

YOUNG MINDS TO SHARE FUTURE BELIEFS”.

The conference program is mainly focused on a Consensus Con-

ference on Training in the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, in-

cluding 8 interactive workshops, in which aspects such as, ‘What

training should be done and why’, will be assessed and discus-

sed, as well as who should be in charge of training, how and

when it should be carried out for students, families, Club dele-

gates and counselors, District offi cers and Governors. The outco-

mes will lead to the drawing up of the Offi cial EEMA Guidelines

on this topic, which will be put forward at the forthcoming Oslo

Conference, which I invite all of you to attend. In addition to a

panel discussion on “The needs of new generations”, a Forum

aimed at assessing “How to boost Short-term Youth Exchange”,

an Open Forum on the “New Generations Service Exchange” and

many other interesting business meetings will take place.

The National and Local organizing committees have organized

a social program designed to give all of you the possibility to

Page 10: CONNECTING YOUNG MINDS TO SHARE FUTURE BELIEFS · CONNECTING YOUNG MINDS TO SHARE FUTURE BELIEFS. Welcome 61st EEMA CONFERENCE ROME, 30 th AUGUST – 1 st SEMPTEMBER 2013. ... Latium

10

spend some leisure time together and enjoy the beauty and

charm of this ancient land, full of mysteries, colors and scents.

Furthermore, the strategic location of the conference will ena-

ble you and your partners to visit Rome easily in your free time.

Rome, one of the oldest capitals in the world. Rome, rich in

cultural and art traditions, with its monuments, fountains, hil-

ls, romantic itineraries, the “golden” Tiber River, the typical little

restaurants famous for their world-renowned cuisine. Rome,

the fashion and glamour capital, with its boutiques and fashion

houses.

The two Post-Conference tours will enable the participants to

see some monuments, archaeological sites, villas and parks in

Latium and Campania, that are among the most beautiful and

interesting Italian regions.

We have worked very hard to organize an event aimed at giving

the participants the opportunity to spend some good time to-

gether, consolidating old friendships and starting new ones. I

don’t know whether we will succeed; however, I am sure that

all of you will be welcomed with the renowned spontaneous,

joyful, friendly hospitality that has always characterized the pe-

ople of our land; a population that has always been willing to

welcome new and old friends with joy .

POST CONFERENCE TOURS

The tour, which will commence after the conference, will be a journey across the two regions in which existed the most an-cient and diverse settlements in Italian history. We will go to the region of Campania, and visit the Royal Palace of Caserta, a beautiful work by the architect Luigi Vanvitelli, and centre “par excellence” of the Bourbon Kingdom. We then move on to Na-ples, the capital of Southern Italy, which, due to its position by the sea, is an infl uential city rich in history. The bustling old part, with its vivid colours and many unique works of art, is full of life.

In Oplonti, one can re-live Roman times. Its ancient splendour can easily be imagined while strolling in the remains of the city. In 79 A.D., together with Pompeii and Ercolano, it was destroyed by the Vesuvius eruption. We then move on to Subiaco, in the Lazio region, to visit a place rich in spirituality, the very sacred cave of St. Benedict and the monastery of St. Scolastica. The special atmosphere encourages contemplation of, not only the wilderness, but one’s own soul.

In Tivoli, at Villa d’Este, the imagination and genius of man is brought to life in one of the most beautiful gardens in the world complete with majestic fountains considered to be a masterpiece of hydraulics. We then move on to the land of the Etruscans, fi rstly to Caprarola, to visit the famous Farnese Palace, and then on to S. Martino del Cimino, to visit the Doria Pam-phili Palace. In Bomarzo, at the Parco dei mostri, we will perceive the dreamlike extravagance of man through the weird statues completely immersed in the wilderness. We will then continue to Tarquinia, the cradle of the Etruscan civilisation, to visit tombs which, to this day, have remained untouched. A visit to the Etruscan Museum which contains many rare and unique arte-facts will follow.

The tour will end at the heart of the Tuscia in Viterbo, the best preserved old town in Italy. The main feature of the city is the Popes’ Palace, so called because on several occasions it was used as the location for conclaves for the election of Popes.

During the tour we will taste the unique products of the land and sea of Southern Italy which form the Mediterranean diet common in the region and which was recognised in 2010 by UNESCO as an intangible Cultural Heritage of the region thus reinforcing it, not only as a fundamental part of its history and background, but also, a major contribution to the world.

WEATHER

Rome enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate. Summers (June to

September) are hot and dry with temperatures often soaring to

37°C. High humidity is common, particularly in July and August.

LANGUAGE

In Italy, you will fi nd lots of people who speak English and are

eager to practice with you. In an unique city like Rome, visited all

year round by tourists from all over the world, there is no com-

munication diffi culty. Romans are used to speaking diff erent

languages with visitors.

Shopping hours are generally Monday from 4:00pm to

7:30/8:00pm, and Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30am to

8:00pm. Certain Shops located in the city centre and some big

shopping centres around the city may be open on Sunday.

Local markets: Rome’s busy markets are full of character and real

life and are an integral part of local life. Their goods include fresh

vegetables, fl owers, antiques and handicraft. They take place in

many city districts and are open only from 7:00am to 2:00pm.

MONEY

The Italian currency is the Euro, the single European currency,

whose offi cial abbreviation is “EUR = €.” Exchange rates of partici-

pating countries are locked into a common currency fl uctuating

against the dollar. The seven euro notes come in denominations

of €500, €200, €100, €50, €20, €10 and €5. The eight euro coins

are in denominations of €2 and €1, and 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents.

ATMS

ATMs (known in Italy as bancomat) are widely available in Rome

and most will accept cards belonging to the Visa, Amex, Master-

Card, Cirrus and Maestro systems. As a precaution check that the

appropriate logo is displayed on the ATM before inserting your

card. Banks’ opening hours are 08:30 to 13:30 and 14:45 to 15:45,

Monday through Friday.

CHANGING MONEY

You can change your money in banks, at post offi ces or at a

cambio (exchange offi ce). There are exchange booths at Stazio-

ne Termini as well as at Fiumicino and Ciampino airports. Always

make sure you have your passport, or some form of photo ID, at

hand when exchanging money.

CREDIT CARDS

Major cards such as Visa, MasterCard, Eurocard, Cirrus, Amex and

Eurocheques are widely accepted.

TRAVELLERS CHEQUES

Travellers cheques are accepted almost everywhere. Those in

Euros, Pounds Sterling or US Dollars are the easiest to cash.

TAXES & REFUNDS

A value-added tax of around 21%, known as IVA (Imposta di Va-

lore Aggiunto), is included in the price of just about everything

in Italy. Non-EU residents who spend more than €155 at shops

with a ‘Tax Free for Tourists’ sticker are entitled to a tax rebate.

You’ll need to fi ll in a form in the shop and get it stamped by

customs as you leave Italy.

TIPPING

In Italy service, usually ranging from 1 to 3 Euros depending on

the restaurant, is automatically added to the check and must be

visible on the menu. Therefore, there is no need to tip. Normally,

however, Italians just round up the bill by a few Euros. Please

do not tip the taxi driver during taxi trips in Rome. Hotel staff ,

such as luggage handlers, happily accept a small tip. Generally,

no other public service workers expect tips. Also remember to

take your receipt, even if paying cash. It is required by law as you

must be able to prove that you paid and that the owner recor-

ded it for tax purposes.

ELECTRICITY

Electrical appliances in Italy work with 220 volts, AC. 50 Hz and

plugs conform to the European system of round pins with two

holes.
