    Did You Know?

    The first Olympic race at

    the ancient games was won

    by Corubus, a chef.

    The American inventor

    Alexander Graham Bell

    wrote for the National

    Geographic magazine as

    H.W. Largelamb, which is a

    near anagram of his name.

    Sweden leads the world

    in newspaper readership

    with about 572 copies sold

    daily for every 1,000 people.

    Spring has officiallybegun and with tempswarming up this weekinto the weekend, kidswill likely be headingoutside playing theirfavorite sports withfriends or teams. Whilesports help keep yourchild active and in shape,choosing to forego theuse of necessary gear andstretching for games andpractices will make yourlittle athletes risk forinjury much higher.

    Each year nationwide,more than 3.5 millionchildren ages 14 andyounger are treated forsports-related injuries.Roughly half of theseinjuries are sustained in

    solo activities includingbiking, skating andskateboarding. Inaddition, approximately1 out of 4 participants inyouth soccer, football or

    baseball has been injuredat least once.

    Between January andDecember 2010, TheSoin Regional PediatricTrauma and EmergencyCenter at The ChildrensMedical Center of Daytonsaw over 1,900 sports-related injuries.

    In team sports, mostinjuries occur duringpractice, not games,says Lisa Schwing, RN,trauma program managerat Dayton Childrens.Always insist thatyour kids wear the sameprotective gear, do thesame warm-ups and takeall the same precautionswhen they practice aswhen theyre getting

    ready for a game.When we think of

    sports injuries, we tend tothink of dramatic tacklesor falls - such as the playsyou often see on highlightreels, but young athletesare also at risk of injuries,says Schwing. If yourcoach recommendscertain types of warm-ups, its not just to makeyou a better athlete itwill help keep you fromgetting hurt.

    Dayton Childrensand Safe Kids GreaterDayton recommendseven precautions forall children playing orpracticing any individualor team sport:

    1 Before signing upfor a sport, get a generalphysical exam.

    2. Always wearappropriate protectivegear for the activityin practice as well asgameand make sure itsthe right size and properlyadjusted.

    3. Do your warm-ups.Again, if its importantbefore a game, its

    important before practicetoo.

    4. Remember to cooldown and stretch afterplaying sports.

    5. Make sureresponsible adults knowand enforce the safety rulesof the sport, are present toprovide supervision, andare trained in first aid andCPR. Also, make sure thefield is in safe condition.

    6. Never play throughan injury. Get immediatehelp from a coach ortrainer and be sure tomention everything thathurts or aches.

    7. Follow the rules.In most sports, the rulesare based not only onsportsmanship, butsafety.

    During sports, have yourchild wear appropriategear including:

    1. shin guards andshoes with rubber cleatsin soccer

    2. a helmet, face mask,and full padding duringfootball

    3. shoes with goodankle support duringbasketball

    4. a batting helmetwhen up to bat duringbaseball

    5. a helmet when skiingor snowboarding andevery time when riding abike

    Finally, have yourchild drink plenty ofwater or electrolytesports drink before andduring the activity, andrest frequently duringhot weather, remindsSchwing. A child canlose up to a quart ofsweat during two hoursof exercise, and kids getoverheated more quicklythan adults and cannotcool down as easily. Ifplaying outdoors, your

    child should wear SPF 15or higher sunscreen.

    As anyone whos ever at-tempted dieting knows, ad-vice on weight loss comesfrom every corner. Friendsmight swear by the latest

    dieting trend while familymembers may be just as ada-mantly convinced the trenddoesnt have merit.

    So whats true and whatsfalse? Simply put, com-bining a healthy diet withregular exercise is the bestway to lose weight and keepthat weight off. While mostadults are fully aware of thatfact, that doesnt stop themfrom nding the latest fadand letting it dictate theireating habits for days oreven weeks. For those aboutto diet, consider the follow-ing good and bad diet fads.

    The Good* Portion control: Many

    diets emphasize the impor-tance of portion control.Research has indicated itsnot just what we eat thatcauses weight gain, but howmuch were eating as well.In a study in the AmericanJournal of Public Health,researchers found that cook-ies are 700 percent biggerthan the suggested USDAstandards. And its not justcookies that are much biggerthan recommended, as ourservings of pasta (480 per-cent), mufns (333 percent)and bagels (195 percent)

    are much bigger than theyshould be. While not all dietsthat promote portion controlare necessarily healthy, por-tion control on its own is ahealthy way for everyone toapproach their daily diet.

    * Lifestyle change: In-dividuals who want to loseweight should look for di-etary tips that promote achange in lifestyle and not

    just changes in diet. Look fordiets that dont have a time-line, promoting fast weightloss in X amount of weeks.A diet that promotes a long-

    term commitment to eatinghealthy foods while also en-couraging daily exercise isone thats likely going to bemore successful and bene-cial than one that promisessignicant weight loss in ashort period of time.

    The Bad* One food can do it

    all: Nearly every dieter hasheard of a diet that promisesyou can eat all you want ofa specic food and still loseweight so long as thats allyoure eating. However, fo-cusing on a specic foodis certain to deprive diet-

    ers of nutrients they sorelyneed. Cutting out entire foodgroups means dieters wontbe enjoyed a balanced diet.Also, dieters will begin tocrave the foods theyre notgetting, which could lead tobingeing.

    Another side effect toone-food diets is that cer-tain foods can cause someunenjoyable side effects,including dehydration orgastrointestinal problems.Look for balance in a diet,which should eliminateone-food diets from con-sideration.

    * Misguided vegetarian-

    ism: While vegetarianismisnt bad, dieters often applyit incorrectly. When appliedcorrectly, a vegetarian diethas been linked to all sortsof benets, including lowerrates of obesity and heartdisease. However, dieters of-ten mistakenly eat a vegetar-ian diet with a foundation ofcheese and pasta, which canactually cause weight gain.Carbohydrate-rich foods,while they might be veg-etarian, will likely result inweight added as opposed tolost. When adopting a vege-tarian diet, be sure to includewhole grains and fruit and

    eat foods like nuts, beans oreven tofu to ensure youregetting enough protein.

    * Bye-bye, carbohy-drates: Arguably no diet ismore popular than the onethat advocates eliminatingcarbohydrates. This is prob-lematic, especially for thosewho want to combine theirhealthy diet with exercise.Carbohydrates are idealfoods for boosting energy,which dieters will need ifthey want to exercise regu-larly. Whole-grain breads,oatmeal and brown rice areall benecial carbohydratesources. For those desiring

    to eliminate some forms ofcarbs from their diets, elimi-nate white bread and whiterice, as those are low in nu-trients.

    When it comes to dieting,there are certainly plentyof options touting incred-ible weight loss in shortperiods of time. But diet-ers should always look forhealthy ways to lose weightand keep it off, which oftenincludes some combinationof a well-balanced diet thatpromotes moderation.

    Diets that advertise rapid weight loss are often not aviable longterm solution.

    AND OVER

    Increasing daily en-ergy levels is a goal formany men and women.Many adults are increas-ingly looking to energydrinks or highly caffein-ated beverages like cof-fee to get the job done,while others are fearfulthat such beverages,though effective at im-proving energy levels,could have an adverseeffect on their overall

    health.For those who feelenergy drinks or an-other cup of coffee isnot the ideal solution toincreasing their energylevels, consider the fol-lowing tips.

    * Exercise. While it

    might seem counter-intuitive to exercise ifyoure feeling fatigued,that fatigue might verywell be a result of lackof exercise. Daily exer-cise helps increase en-ergy levels and improvemood. Something assimple as taking a walkduring a lunch breakcan vastly improve en-ergy levels.

    * Drink plenty of

    water. Dehydration canmake people feel lethar-gic. Drinking the recom-mended daily amount ofwater can boost energylevels, especially after aworkout when the bodyoften craves fluids.

    * Carefully moni-

    tor sugar intake. Sweetfoods with lots of sugarwill provide an initialenergy boost. However,that boost is fleeting,and blood sugar levelswill rapidly drop afterit. Instead of sugarysnacks, select wholegrain foods, whichslowly and steadily in-crease the bodys ener-gy levels.

    * Check magnesium

    levels. Constant feel-ings of fatigue could beindicative of a magne-sium deficiency. Studieshave shown that womenwith magnesium defi-ciencies expend moreenergy to do physi-cal tasks than they did

    when their magnesiumlevels were restored.Almonds, hazelnutsand cashews are goodsources of magnesium,as are whole grains andfish.

    * Dont skip meals.Exhausted or fatiguedmen and women are of-ten busy at work, whichcommonly results inmissed meals. Skip-ping meals, according

    to studies published inthe journal NutritionalHealth revealed, leadsto greater feelings offatigue by days end.Make eating all yourmeals a priority, and en-ergy levels are likely toimprove.
