On Saturday, October 28th, at its 2017 Illuminations Gala, the Chapman Partnership presented Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho with the prestigious Alvah H. Chapman Jr. Humanitarian Award. The award is given to an individual or organization that follows the moral and civic examples of Alvah H. Chapman, Jr. in serving the homeless.

Superintendent Carvalho was given the award for his commitment and passion

to help the homeless regain their dignity. The District serves the food, shelter, and educational needs of

thousands of homeless students and their families.

M-DCPS and Sprint are committed to closing the homework gap.

Sprint’s “1Million Project” was designed to help one million high school students in the U.S. who do not have Internet access at home reach their full potential by giving them devices and free high-speed Internet access. Sprint will distribute 14,000 free wireless devices and service to eligible M-DCPS students for up to four years while they attend high school.

This partnership will help eliminate digital deserts in our communities, providing learning opportunities anytime, anywhere.

In today’s hyper-connected society, instilling the importance of digital citizenship in our students is a priority. As technology becomes part of our classrooms and home life, we must ensure that our students are using social media in a safe, legal, and responsible manner.

Last month, students from 40 Miami-Dade County public schools gathered at Southwest Miami Senior High School for an Anti-Bullying Ambassador training, gaining practical ideas and receiving top tips on how to prevent and report inappropriate

behavior. This training was developed and carried out by The Diana Award, a not-for-profit organization named after Princess Diana with the belief that young people have the power to change the world for the better. After a full day of activities, teens now have a greater understanding of the issue of bullying; how to celebrate diversity; and support others.

Following a tragic incident involving one of our students, which was streamed live on Facebook, Superintendent Carvalho advocated for social media entities to step in to help prevent these types of incidents. Through this partnership with Facebook, students now have the tools to be able to spread awareness about this important issue, ensuring everyone feels safe in school, both on and offline.

‘1MILLION PROJECT’

With Art Basel around corner and right in our own backyard, M-DCPS students have the opportunity to experience the arts in and out of the classroom. Select schools will visit Wynwood Walls and the Art Basel Artistic Showcase to be held at Jose de Diego Middle School. During the field experience, students will be exposed to contemporary art, Wynwood Wall murals, live painting of murals by international artists, and an artistic showcase by M-DCPS high school visual and performing arts students.

In addition, several schools will a enjoy a visit to the Art Basel exhibition, stimulating the creative spirit in students. This experience will allow students to view all forms of 2-D, 3-D, video and performance art created by emerging and established artists, as well as the great masters.

GROUNDBREAKING AT KROP SENIOR HIGH A $9.8M General Obligation Bond investment brings an innovative approach to teaching and learning, the second stand-alone iPrep Academy, to Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School. Expected to open for the 2018-2019 school year, this iPrep will feature 600 new student stations and several large collaboration spaces. #GOBprogress

M-DCPS is a training center aligned with the American Heart Association to conduct annual Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training sessions and certification classes to teachers and personnel. In addition, senior high school physical education teachers train all students enrolled in Personal Fitness classes. Two staff members at all schools are CPR certified.

How does the community stay informed and educated? Meet the Office of Communications team, dedicated professionals who ensure that Miami-Dade residents receive the most up-to-date information about our schools, programs, and initiatives, as well as situations that impact schools or the entire county. Their longstanding work with local radio, television, and print media allows for quick dissemination of information. Spanish and Haitian-Creole outreach also includes the translation of hundreds of documents.

The Strategic Educational Marketing division oversees numerous tools

for outreach including multi-media campaigns and has broadened social media efforts. The Internal Communications division utilizes automated telephone calls, emails, and emergency text messages to keep students, families, and employees informed.

Chapman Jr. Humanitarian Award. El premio es otorgado a una persona u organización que sigue los ejemplos morales y cívicos de Alvah H. Chapman Jr. de servir a los desamparados.

El Superintendente Carvalho fue otorgado el premio

por su compromiso y pasión por ayudar a que los desamparados recuperen su dignidad. El Distrito sirve

las necesidades alimenticias, de albergue y educacionales de miles de estudiantes desamparados y sus familias.

Las M-DCPS y Sprint están comprometidos a cerrar la brecha de las tareas.

El proyecto ‘1Million’ de Sprint fue diseñado para ayudar a un millón de estudiantes de secundaria en los Estados Unidos que no tienen acceso a la Internet en el hogar a que logren su máximo potencial mediante la distribución de dispositivos y acceso gratuito a la Internet de alta velocidad. Sprint distribuirá 14,000 dispositivos inalámbricos gratuitos y también servicio gratuito a estudiantes participantes de las M-DCPS por un plazo de hasta cuatro años mientras asistan a la secundaria.

Esta colaboración ayudará a eliminar los desiertos digitales dando oportunidades de aprendizaje en cualquier momento y lugar.

En esta sociedad actual de híper-conectividad, infundir la importancia de la ciudadanía digital en nuestros estudiantes es imprescindible. Ya que la tecnología se hace parte de nuestras aulas y de la vida en el hogar, debemos asegurar que nuestros estudiantes utilicen los medios sociales de manera segura, legal y responsable.

El pasado mes, estudiantes de 40 escuelas de las M-DCPS se reunieron en Southwest Miami Senior High School para una capacitación de “Anti-Bullying Ambassadors”, donde se les

comunicaron ideas prácticas y consejos importantes acerca de cómo prevenir y reportar comportamientos inapropiados. Dicha capacitación fue desarrollada y realizada por The Diana Award, una organización sin fines de lucro que lleva el nombre de la Princesa Diana. Tras una jornada completa de actividades, los adolescentes ahora tienen un mejor conocimiento del asunto del hostigamiento, de cómo celebrar la diversidad y cómo

apoyar a los demás.

Tras un trágico accidente que involucró uno de nuestros estudiantes, el cual fue transmitido en vivo a través de Facebook, el Superintendente Carvalho convocó a las entidades de los medios sociales para que interviniesen a fin de ayudar a prevenir dichos tipos de incidentes. Mediante esta asociación con Facebook, los estudiantes tienen las herramientas para poder crear conciencia sobre el hostigamiento, para asegurar que todos se sientan seguros en la escuela, ambos en y fuera de línea.

PROYECTO ‘1MILLION’

Con la exhibición Art Basel tan cerca en tiempo y lugar, los estudiantes de las M-DCPS tienen la oportunidad de experimentar las artes dentro y fuera del aula. Ciertas escuelas visitarán las exhibiciones Wynwood Walls y Art Basel Artistic Showcase que se montarán en la José de Diego Middle School. Así, los estudiantes experimentarán el arte contemporáneo, los murales de Wynwood Walls, pinturas por artistas internacionales y una exhibición por los estudiantes de escuelas secundarias de las M-DCPS.

Además, algunos estudiantes disfrutarán de una visita a la exhibición de Art Basel, lo cual estimulará el espírito creativo y verán todas las formas de arte en dos y tres dimensiones, de video y rendimiento escénico, creadas por artistas emergentes y ya establecidos, como también por los grandes maestros.

INICIO DE OBRA EN KROP SENIOR HIGH Una inversión del GOB de 9.8 millones de dólares trae un enfoque innovador a la enseñanza, a la segunda Academia iPrep independiente en la Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior. La misma abrirá sus puertas en el 2018-2019, con 600 nuevas estaciones para estudiantes y varios grandes espacios colaborativos. #GOBprogress

Las M-DCPS son un centro de capacitación en colaboración con la asociación American Heart Association para llevar a cabo clases de certificación de CPR para maestros y empleados. Además, los maestros de educación física capacitan a los estudiantes de las clases de Personal Fitness. Todas las escuelas tienen empleados certificados en CPR.

La Oficina de Comunicaciones está compuesta de un equipo de profesionales de la educación y de los medios que realizan una variedad de funciones para asegurar que los residentes de Miami-Dade estén al tanto de todo lo que ofrecen las M-DCPS y que están plenamente informados cuando surgen situaciones que afectan a una escuela o a todo el condado. Su duradera labor con el radio, la televisión y los medios impresos locales permiten la rápida divulgación de información. El alcance en español y criollo haitiano también incluye la traducción de cientos de documentos.

La división de Mercadeo Educacional Estratégico supervisa las campañas multi-medios y que ha ampliado los esfuerzos de los medios sociales para promover los programas e iniciativas del distrito. La división de Comunicaciones Internas utiliza diferentes formas para mantener informados a

los estudiantes, las familias y los empleados.

El personal en el Centro de Información al Ciudadano ayuda con las inquietudes del público con respecto a varias políticas, procedimientos, normas, eventos vigentes, operaciones y solicitudes de archivos públicos de las M-DCPS.
