A further increasein our marketshareIn our markets too,the past two yearshave caused turbu-lence on a scalenever experiencedbefore. During thishectic phase onegained the impres-sion that the cardswere dealt anewamong the competi-tors. For R&M, this

far-reaching transformation phase wasquite positive on balance, as we wereable, in all our marketing organisations, toincrease our market share – proof that anever growing number of customers relyon R&M products. Our rigorous corporatestrategy, namely to focus on precisely de-fined principal target markets and corecompetencies, has thus confirmed andproved itself especially in times of radicalchange as experienced at present.

Continuity ensuredR&M is, and will remain, an independentfamily enterprise with all the advantagesthis entails. These include not only shortlines of decision and close proximity tothe customer, but also the reassuring factthat we base our decisions on long-termgoals and can therefore establish the pre-requisites for equally long-term competi-tiveness. Ensured continuity in top management isa further advantage of our form of busi-ness organisation and also guaranteesthat even in difficult times R&M invests innew technologies and product innova-tion.

Lasting strategyWe are maintaining our strategy of fullcommitment to layer 1 connectivity prod-ucts without any change in direction, andin addition we are continuously expandingour business segments.

Enterprise cablingWe are the first to be in a position to offera total solution right to the workplace, in-volving both communication cabling andpower cabling. Our customers not only benefit from theconcept of the expanded generic cablingsystem, for which we are a one-stop sup-plier, but also from matching modularcomponents.R&M has gained a remarkable techno-logical lead within this segment which isbecoming ever more important and is ex-periencing strong growth. We are still theonly manufacturer that during fullyauto-mated assembly performs a 100% checkof all critical transmission values on everyCat. 6 connector and every jack. By doingthis we ensure optimal security for theend customer.

Carrier cablingWe have still further adapted our copperproducts to new transmission methodssuch as 2 Mbit/s ADSL in the backbonenetwork, and we have aligned them tothe additional requirements. Moreover,we have been able to further optimise ourown glass fiber connectors and providesophisticated modular total solutions forinside and outside plant.

Residential cablingIncreasingly there are new requirementsin the residential segment, for examplefaster Internet surfing or a residential VPNconnection to a company’s own Ethernet.R&M is again the first enterprise tolaunch a modular socket for the homesegment. Depending on customer require-ments, either telephone inserts or data in-serts (RJ45) can be snapped into the mostcompact TV / radio socket (coax). This solution makes it possible, even duringrenovation work, to quickly and econom-ically retrofit multimedia cabling withoutthe need for punching additional holes inwalls. Furthermore, this solution providesa very significant advantage in that, thanks to the well-known connector sys-tems in common use, all existing equip-ment can continue to be connected. There is thus no need to change the con-nection cables, as would be the case forexample in a proprietary Cat. 7 connectorsystem.

Industrial cablingThe slogan here is “Ethernet goes indus-try”. R&M is following this trend bylaunching the latest in RJ45 solutionswhich are even better suited to harsh en-vironments (dust, humidity). We providethe only system where subsequently thesocket and the RJ45 jack can simply beretrofitted to the protective system IP 54.

I would like to take this opportunity tothank you for deciding in favour of R&Mand I can assure you that we will be main-taining our innovative strength and work-ing hard at continually expanding it. This isin line with our long-term company policyand ensures that you will continue to getstate-of-the-art cabling solutions.

Success through strong partnership

050.1046

The IT and tele-communicationssector is undergo-ing a transforma-tion on a scalehitherto unknown, with dramatic ef-fects on the mar-ket. R&M is facingup to the cur-rent challenges byforming a networkof selected distri-butors and partners, and by providing acomprehensive

portfolio of services to decision makers, planners and installers.

The fierce competition for market share inthe IT and telecommunications sector isforcing prices to fall rapidly and dramati-cally, reducing turnover despite a relative-ly acceptable orders position. Many firms, especially those quoted on the stock ex-change, are also suffering from a loss ofcapital due to the persisting downwardtrend in the shares market. Uncertaintyabout the economic future is holding upinvestment in long overdue projects.

This situation is also putting customer loy-alty to a severe test. Human resources re-leased on to the labour market constitutean additional external pressure on internaldecisions, which now have to be taken atever shorter notice. This is reflected, among other things, in constantly short-ening delivery dates.

Providers must reactProviders must draw their conclusionsfrom this. The vital factor is clear posi-tioning in the market. It no longer sufficesto contrast products with competingones: what is needed is a combination ofproducts and services. A product shouldbe examined in terms of the place it oc-cupies in the customer’s overall business.Having the appropriate know-how is anunbeatable marketing plus for the pro-vider in this respect.

n plant.

Other fundamental requirements are ashort time-to-market and a streamlinedrange of immediately available products.Healthy financial structures and reserveshelp the provider cope with reducing mar-gins and in-house cost pressure, while atthe same time retaining the trust of thecustomer.

Partnerships with other firms deliver asubstantial strategic advantage by ensuringcloseness to the customer, wherever hemay be. A clear commitment by bothparties to coordinate their market oper-ations is fundamental to this purpose.

Service to distributors – the R&M answerAs an independent, prudently run familybusiness, rich in tradition and with finan-cially sound structures, R&M AG did nothave to satisfy the needs of externalshareholders during the recent years ofInternet and IT hype. We quickly identi-fied the signals coming from the marketand took the appropriate action, so we arestill strong and competitive.

To achieve the success we aim for, weare emphasising cooperation with strongpartners, the key factor being the pains-taking selection of competent and quali-fied distributors (see also CONNECTIONSNo. 23, “Efficient cooperation with dis-tributors”).

Redes Suministrosy Comunicaciones(RSC) is our distri-butor in Mexico. Incollaboration withRSC, we openedthe R&M Mexicorepresentation of-fice in 2001 and, in 2002, ourR&Mfreenet sys-tem was very suc-cessfully installedby CONARED, ourcertified installer,at Sociedad Mer-

cantil (SM), who distributes in Morelosstate the products of the ModeloGroup, one of these being Corona, theworld’s best-known and best-sellingMexican beer.

Oscar Martinez FloresRepresentation OfficeManager Latin [email protected]

All told, SM’s three distribution points inCuernavaca, Cuautla and Zacatepec soldnearly 83 million litres of beer in 2002.The company has grown at a constant5% for the last twenty years and, in 2002,the National Association of Beer Produ-cers reported SM’s share of the Morelosstate market to be 84%.

SM had an existing ACS in their Zacate-pec facilities and a Cat. 5 mix-match in-stallation at the other two locations. These older installations no longer metcommunications requirements, so SMlooked for a brand offering the followingadditional features:

• Cabling systems solutions• Solutions based on ISO Standards (the

Modelo Group has ISO certification)• A certificated installation company

After a number of meetings betweenCONARED and SM’s IT managers early inthe year, SM decided on the R&Mfreenetsolution.

First, the installation in Zacatepec was up-graded, using the shielded Global panel inthe MDF as an alternative to copper andthe FO part, while some existing ACSproducts were retained, including thecable and RJ45 modules. This was theoptimal solution for the customer’sneeds. In addition, one SOHO solutionwas installed in the distribution office.

The installations in Cuernavaca andCuautla were designed and installed us-ing only R&Mfreenet products, the Globalpanel and the 16-port panel.

SM is entirely satisfied with the so-lutions implemented and with the localsupport provided by R&M Mexicothrough the Representation Office Mana-ger for Latin America, Oscar Martinez, and his specialists. On completion of theinstallation, Mr José Ocejo, SM Regional

I see a very good future forboth of us in the Mexican telecommuni-cations market.”

Why R&M?

Sociedad Mercantil found all requestedfeatures and more in the R&Mfreenetsystem, and in R&M Mexico theyfound the right partner to solve theircabling problems.

The non-profit AsiaHeart Foundationaims to build fourmajor cardiac hos-pitals for specia-list care spanningAsia. One of them,Narayana Hruda-yalaya, is at Ban-galore. The Con-struction Compa-ny accepted thechallenge of build-ing the world’slargest heart hos-pital with thestate-of-the-art

technology and know-how requiredfor any conceivable heart surgery.TVSnet, an R&M joint venture, waschosen as cabling partner, R&Mfreenetas generic cabling system.

Headed by the charismatic Dr DeviPrasad Shetty, Narayana Hrudayalaya is apioneer institution aiming to provide spe-cialised cardiac care to all sections of so-ciety at low patient cost, and shows howtechnology can help professionals deliverquality healthcare country-wide. It isunique in Asia in providing low-cost net-work access from very remote locations.

TVSnet wins the tough raceProject implementation revealed that ex-isting network capacities were inade-quate. In a tough race involving some ofthe biggest names, Narayana Hruda-yalaya demanded comprehensive tech-nical specifications, an economic end-to-end solution, a team with proven tech-nical expertise, and vendor willingness tohelp provide lower cost options for addi-tional works. They chose R&M’s freenet generic cab-ling system, and asked the TVSnet teamto carry out not just the project but alsothe entire networking of the hospital.TVSnet general manager Satish Irde said,“We consider it a privilege to be associ-ated with a visionary institution whichunderstands the relevance of technologyin improving delivery of healthcare.”

How the project was implemented“With telemedicine, a super specialist inan urban unit can real-time monitor a re-mote unit manned by an ordinary MBBSdoctor and advise the patient” says Dr.Shetty. “Cost is immensely reduced with-out compromising the quality of the ad-vice. This also allows one super specialistto expand his practice without being con-strained by physical boundaries.”Key networking issues were connectivity, bandwidth, future-proofing, scalability andcriticality. Covering 200,000 square feet, the 480-node network is performing well.

User nodes are located inconsulting rooms, billing and registration, operating theatres, ICUs, laboratories, nuclear cardiology, stores, and mainte-nance. This cabling installation is warrantedagainst manufacturing defects for twentyyears by R&M, Switzerland, and complieswith ISO/IEC and EIA/TIA standards. An 8-port gigabit (fiber) switch is used as the backbone, while individual floorconnectivity is provided through 24-portstackable and manageable switches con-nected to the central switch through gigabit (fiber) modules. The main server isconnected on gigabit to the same centralswitch. TVSnet technical manager Rajen-dra Simha said, “The entire network isCat. 6, designed to support gigabit and fu-

ture multi-gigabit technology on the back-bone and to the desktop. Currently, fullduplex gigabit has been deployed forbackbone and full duplex 100 Mbit/s to thedesktop.”

Network applicationsThe network supports all existing soft-ware platforms, giving more than 450users access to general hospital adminis-tration and the sophisticated Hospital In-formation Management System. Soft-ware modules and applications are runfrom various locations, and data is collect-ed and updated on the central server. The accounts, administration and pur-chase departments run their applicationson the same network. Data collectedfrom the various departments online areused for diagnostic and future analysisand patient record management.

Going beyond – making the vision arealityA distinctive breakthrough, telemedicineintegrates customised medical softwareand computer hardware with diagnosticinstruments connected to a Very SmallAperture Terminal at each location. Thismakes it possible to transmit patientmedical records, including images, tospecialists, who provide diagnosis andtreatment in a videoconference with thebedside doctor. Turnaround time and pay-load are viable, and current response isfavourable.

Why TVSnet and R&M?

Dr Devi Shetty said, “I am pleased withthe implementation and service provid-ed by TVSnet and would like to compli-ment them for supporting in their ownway our pursuit of using technology asa tool to make quality healthcare firstaccessible and then affordable to thecommon man, irrespective of loca-tion.”

VW’s factory of the future – with fiber solutions from R&M

VW is giving worka new meaning. The motor manu-facturing group iscombining produc-tion and learninginto an ongoingprocess, in a modelthey call “VW 5000”.A factory of the fu-ture, supported byfiber solutions fromR&M, is strength-ening competitive-ness at the Wolfs-burg location.

VW is setting up a new environment toensure that production in Germany will re-main competitive in the future. Auto 5000GmbH, a company within the Volkswagengroup, is intended to demonstrate thattop quality, reasonable production costs, secure, well-paid jobs and attractive prof-it margins are by no means incompatiblebut can in fact be combined into an intel-ligent process.

As well as optimising the businessprocess, the VW 5000 concept focuseson employees and their individual contri-butions to productivity and added value.Dr Peter Hartz, a member of the manag-ing board, calls this “workholder value”.The 5,000 new staff see themselves asmembers of a network of entrepreneurs. They take personal responsibility for re-sults and achieving objectives, especiallyin their own further education and occu-pational training, and gain competence insolving problems at the workplace.

Learning with online support Employee contribution to companydevelopment and competitiveness is ex-pressed in a commitment to lifelonglearning – within the production processitself. If, for example, someone is unableto rectify a fault in the assembly process, qualification modules developed on siteare immediately available to him. Thelessons learned are immediately prac-tised by the team at the workplace, and

the result is a feeling of achievement. Al-most every time, this approach automati-cally yields the best solution.

Anyone looking at the complexity of in-dustrial production processes and theever shorter cycles in the automobileindustry can imagine the communicationsoutlay this model entails. Almost everyworkplace has to have a permanentconnection with multimedia sources ofinformation. Every section requires aninfrastructure that permits rapid teammanagement, short reaction time and aconstant flow of information. Design en-gineers, buyers, suppliers, productionteams, manpower planners, trainers, marketing and management – all need tobe able to exchange enormous quantitiesof data in real time.

Logically: fiber to the desk High-performance components werethus looked for when Siemens IS&S, theprimary contractor, and VW’s own net-work service provider K-DOI 35 weredesigning the platform for VW 5000.Information technology and manufactur-ing plant had to promote the objective oflasting competitiveness in every respect. The aim of the planners was to constructan innovative factory within a factory, inthe new Halls 8 to 10 that were to be setup on the worksite at Wolfsburg. It com-menced operations in November 2002.

050.1062

Fiber to the desk (FTTD) was the logicalchoice for the new communications infra-structure in the halls. VW sees it as amodel: on-site infrastructures that havelong-term stability and are future-proof,flexible and strongly resourced can onlystrengthen the group’s freedom of actionand competitiveness.

During the selection procedure, R&Mstood out as a particularly well-qualifiedsupplier. Like the VW 5000 model itself, the R&M partnership with K-DOI 35 andthe six installation firms involved is char-acterised by a hard-headed view of thefuture.

Efficient installation The production halls of the VW 5000 pro-ject were fitted with a star-shaped cableconfiguration, integrated into two fully re-dundant networks and linked with twocomputing centres. It was possible toconcentrate the interfaces into one equip-ment room per hall, each having a doublecabinet for active and passive compon-ents and a break-out solution. Using cop-per cables would have required five timesas many cabinet positions.

CONNECTIONS 24 / 03.03

R&M also developed a specific faceplatefor SC duplex adaptors. This simplifiestermination identification, thus speedingup any retrofits and adaptations to meetnew situations – yet another componentin making VW future-fit.

Looking beyond this, the Auto 5000GmbH project is something of a proto-type for Central Europe as a productionlocation. What is at stake here is what thesuccessful factory of the future will looklike. It’s already clear that highly sophisti-cated optical cable networks will play animportant role in it.

Plus points for R&M

The primary contractor for the VW5000 project, Siemens IS&S, the net-work planner and operator, K-DOI 35,and six installation firms, all gave theirunambiguous vote in favour of R&M.Our plus points were these:

• a consistent optical cable solutionand the highest-quality productsmean a secure investment

• mature, proven products • simple patching at the Unirack • racks with the low mounting depth

of 230 mm • installation possible from front or

rear • resources for more panels • reserve bundled loose tube protects

Bratislava – Slova-kian metropolisand major nodalpoint of transportbetween Centraland Southeast Eur-ope. Top qualitywill be required tomodernise the in-frastructure forthe location hasnew challenges toface. The SlovakRailways’ invest-ment was very for-ward-looking. They

chose R&M as their partner for the car-rier network.

One of the state Railways of the SlovakRepublic (ZSR)’s projects of telecommu-nications network digitalisation is calledDIRAC, focusing on nodal point Bratislavawhere the vicinity to Austria and Hungaryallows getting connected to the neigh-bouring railway networks. ZSR works inclose cooperation with international part-ners such as Ericsson, Alcatel and R&Min this project.

Assuring reliable transportRailway companies such as the ZSR usetelecommunications networks for theirmain purpose of assuring reliable trans-portation of goods and people. Comparedto public telecommunications, the result-ing requirements are very specific. The

key factors for developing transport ser-vices are safety and reliability.

New challengesWhen the new technologies hit thetelecommunications market, the SlovakRailways started considering digitalisingtheir infrastructure. The main problemwere the financial means required for acomprehensive digitalisation, namely thecomplete replacement of the obsolete, analogue network. The solution was tocarry out the system transformation in anexemplary investment campaign in fourphases.

epartment ZSR; Stefan Krumböck, Managing Manager, R&M Austria; Dipl. Ing. Juraj Kozina,m left to right)

Major changes will take place:• New FO cabling including all passive

connecting hardware in every train station.

• Use of SDH transmission technology(STM-16).

• Upgrading the communications sys-tems for the railway company’s ownprivate telephone network.

• Upgrading the railway’s own, global IPnetworks (MPLS/VPN), interconnect-ing all local computer networks in thetrain stations.

DIRAC – introducing the digital ageDIRAC, ZSR’s first comprehensive projectin 2002, initialised the digital age on thenetwork. The railway transport hub Brati-slava is fully switched over to permanentdigital operation.

Thanks to Bratislava’s favourable geo-graphic situation, the ZSR network wasalso connected to the telecommunica-tions networks of the neighbouringstates’ railways of Austria (ÖBB) and Hun-gary (MAV).

Thorough decision-making processIn close cooperation with their projectpartner DAMOVO, ZSR selected thetelecommunications technologies to use.DAMOVO has Europe-wide experiencesin selecting, installing, and operating sys-tems of that scale.

A comparative study on the monoblocceramic ferrule and the composite ferrulewas important for the decision of ZSR’sTechnical Division. The solution presentedby R&M convinced the planners especiallyfor its long-term investment security.

The Slovak Railways at a glance

The Railways of the Slovak Republic(ZSR) were founded in 1993 as theresult of a government decision.

However, the building of the railway inSlovakia already began during the Aus-trian-Hungarian empire. The first train, pulled by a steam-locomotive, enteredSlovakia on 20 August 1848 on its jour-ney from Vienna to Bratislava.

The ZSR’s rail network measures 3,665km, 1,472 km of which have been elec-trified by now. The tracks travelthrough fantastic landscapes and leadup to the High Tatra mountains. Thehighest station is at 1,320 m. The ter-rain is a very demanding one for a railnetwork and there are 2,361 bridges of47 km total length and 76 tunnels of 43km which need to be serviced. TheSlovakian capital Bratislava offers avariety of transport options – by rail, water, road, and airplane. The rail net-work significantly gained in importancewhen the Rhein-Main-Donau-Kanal wascompleted.

R&M’s convincing reasons:

• safety and reliability• cost-performance payoff• proven, high-end SDH solution• long-term partnership • high investment security• the advantages of the monobloc

The date is 7 July,2002, sunrise on Lake Geneva. Ner-vously, Hugo Marty puts on his skintightwetsuit, checks his gear once more, putson his goggles. Then, finally, after endlessmeetings lasting till morning and count-less hours of training, there is the startingshot, at 5 o’clock sharp. Hundreds of ex-treme athletes jump, against a terrificbackdrop, into the lake, to take an en-durance test of a very special kind. Thatmoment has etched itself into my mind, never to be forgotten.

Tour of SwitzerlandA race across Switzerland; 1,475.5 kilome-tres in 7 days swimming, cycling bymountain bike and racing bicycle, inlineskating and running. These are the im-pressive challenges of this gigathlon. Or-ganised for the first time for Expo.02, itled the participants from the Expogrounds in Yverdon via Lausanne, Inter-laken, Locarno, Samedan, Frauenfeld andLucerne to another Expo location, Biel. The participants were single athletes whodid the whole race or single stages, orgroups of five or so-called power teamsof 6 to 35 members. Five gigathletes thenhad to cover a stage together and werethen relieved by the next team. This wasthe category of the R&M team, addition-ally sponsored by Draka Norsk Cables andTechem.

Gigathlon finish in Biel on the Expo.02 grounds

050.1074

A dream comes true After the fantastic start in Geneva therefollowed a not less fantastic race. Weknew one thing for sure: we were goingto stick it out, no matter what. And so wedid. 76 hours, 4 minutes and 55.5 sec-onds later, we crossed the finishing line.Immensely happy, we ran the last kilome-tres across the Expo grounds in Biel. Andafter all the exhaustion, the rain, bad falls, constant lack of sleep, traffic jams, over-loaded GSM networks, and all the beauti-ful moments on the race across Switzer-land, a dream finally came true. It seemeda minor matter at that point to have ourperformance confirmed with rank 34 outof 174 teams.

It was not until later, when we were calmagain and kind of empty inside, that werealised just how strenuous it had been. But despite all the exhaustion we knewone thing for certain: the R&M team wasgoing to be there at next year’s gigathlon. The training has already started.

Eric Zimmerli demonstrates the pump stations remote control. A high-performance informationinfrastructure is the basis for a flexible energy distribution.

... for superlative use in energy industry ...

050.1082

EOS is not only the biggest power supplierin French Switzerland but also the mostprogressive energy trader in WesternEurope. Its active and efficient perform-ance in the electricity exchange hasalready developed into an independentbusiness branch. In the business year2000/01 EOS has traded 13 billion kilo-watt hours.

Modernised infrastructureAn energy producer and trader of suchdimensions, operating a reliable and effi-cient, complex network of water inletsand tunnels in glacier areas, water reser-voirs and power plants, as well as high-voltage power lines around the hour, needs a just as powerful infrastructure forcommunication, control and information.

Consequently, the EOS group mod-ernised their cabling in the company’sheadquarters in Lausanne and at the op-eration centre of EOS Grande Dixence inSion.

Pierre Zimmermann, responsible fortelecommunications at EOS central of-fice, carefully checked various cablingsystems. R&M’s product range featuringR&Mfreenet Cat. 6 UTP, presented by thelocal IT installation specialists TSA, provedto be the best value solution.

Safe and efficient cabling between sev-eral buildings connected by tunnels is vitalfor EOS. Their headquarters were partlyerected on the foundation walls of a his-toric hotel, and available space proved tobe an extremely critical issue in this hon-ourable object. The compact componentsby R&M, however, installed by TSA easilysolved that problem.

16

050.1083

Reliability is top priorityOperational reliability is paramount for thecabling of the Grande Dixence centre inSion. From here 80 water inlets from acatchment area of 420 km2, a tunnel net-work of 100 km, 5 pump stations and 4power plants need to be monitored per-manently and with absolute reliability.

In future, it will need multi-media moni-toring systems to even faster diagnosedamages and problems, e.g. on the basisof films. Eric Zimmerli of EOS GrandeDixence therefore opted for a cablingsolution with broadband capability.

His choice was the supplier Sedelec SAValais in St.Léonard, an experienced plan-ning and installation firm, and proven part-ner of R&M.

Sedelec worked out a solution withR&Mfreenet Cat. 6 UTP for the installa-tions up to the workplaces and the prod-uct range E-2000TM for the cabling of thefloors. Eric Zimmerli, who had not workedwith Sedelec and R&M before, was fullysatisfied with the outcome.

Why R&M:

EOS opted for R&Mfreenet Cat. 6 UTPand E-2000TM from R&M for the copperand FO cabling at the locations Lausanneand Sion for the following reasons:

• most cost-effective infrastructure • safe and efficient cabling• space-saving, compact design• highest reliability• best comparative values• long-term warranty• true Cat. 6 performance• broadband resources

Their microtech-nological products cause revolution-ary changes in industry, biotechnol-ogy, medicine and other fields. CSEMgenerates numerous dynamic start-ups and provides them with ideal pro-duction environments – with infra-structures from R&M.

High-tech park at the Galileo Center Neuchâtel is turning into a major breedingground for innovations made in Switzer-land. The strategy of the Swiss Center forElectronics and Microtechnology (CSEM)is successfully taking advantage of thisgrowth market.

To make commercial use of these ideasand innovations, CSEM continuously gen-erates new companies and lets thembenefit from the favourable location ofthe ultra-modern high-tech park at theGalileo Center in Peseux, near the parentcompany.

Demanding specificationsCSEM and partner UDITIS make highdemands on telecommunications and in-formation technology. UDITIS is a spin-offof CSEM and provides young companiesat the Galileo Center with informationtechnology and systems. Particularly thegrowing demand for bandwidth needs tobe considered for the installation. The cab-ling system should have ample resourcesand a modular design.

Telecommunica-tions is facing in-creasing techno-logical demandsdue to Internetand rising competi-tive pressure. Evenpessimistic esti-mates of globaldata traffic speakof a 100% increaseper year. Networkstructures will haveto be changed.Ethernet will notonly be transmis-

sion standard in long-distance net-works but will reach the customerthrough Ethernet in the first mile andfiber to the curb. R&M provides the so-lution for a fast and safe installation ofinterfaces.

It takes fiber optic networks for high-speed data transmission. Copper infra-structures are already brought to theirlimits by Gigabit Ethernet.

Copper cables cause various technicaltransmission problems only to be solvedat high costs. There simply is no reason-able alternative to the optical fiber aboveone gigabit.

10 terabits per second in the long-distance networkMeanwhile long-distance communica-tions links transmit up to 10 terabits persecond – i.e. 10,000 gigabits per second. With optical-electric-optical conversion, distances of 100 kilometres between twoamplifiers can be bridged and purelyoptical performance amplifiers covermore than 7,000 kilometres.

This takes Ethernet, initially developed forLAN, as transmission standard into long-distance transmission. Trunking technolo-gy is leading 10-gigabit Ethernet stan-dardisation straight to networks of up to80 Gigabit.

Structural and economic aspectsTraditionally, long-distance networks be-long to optical transmission with its enor-mous transmission capacity since thenumber of customers in the LAN sectorwho actually need 10-gigabit Ethernet israther small.

However, there will be no getting aroundoptical backbones for WAN networkoperators and carriers to meet the dailyincreasing bandwidth demands. Ownerof old structures are not very happy withthis development because new carrierswith new structures can offer altogether

The wavelength division multiplex tech-nique (WDM) is an interesting solution for

capacity expansion of existing networks. With WDM Multiplex signals are multi-plexed by being transmitted at differentwavelengths or channels through the samefiber.

WDM is used wherever new opticalfibers can not be installed for economic ortechnical reasons, allowing multiple useof existing infrastructures. Cost calcula-tions also show the profitability of switch-ing nodes in WDM technique.

There are two types of WDM techniques, one is called CWDM (C = Coarse), featur-ing a relatively coarse channel grid withup to 8 channels. It is ideal for good valuetransmission systems. Up to 80 Gb/s canbe transmitted through one multimodefiber for example.

Then there is DWDM (D = Dense) with adense channel grid with up to 320 chan-nels – a high-end solution. Each channelhas a capacity of 2.5 to 10, or 20 to 40 Gb/s.

Ethernet – tomorrow’s access networkstandard? In January 2001, the IEEE 802.3 workinggroup had their first meeting on Ethernetin the First Mile. Their basic idea was thatif optical networks using the 10-gigabitEthernet standard introduce a new per-formance dimension to WAN technology,Ethernet packages can be transported dir-ectly from house to house. The standard-isation group’s first meeting wasattended by Nokia, ADC, Lucent, Ciscoand other major manufacturers.

The market potential is enormous. USAmerican and European telecommunica-tions and cable network operators wouldwelcome a binding standard. The domes-tic market would amount to over 200 mil-lion households plus innumerable smalland medium offices.

The IEEE 802.3 working group has aninterest to push Switched Ethernet asstandard for domestic network surround-

CONNECTIONS 24 / 03.03

ings. Most of all there will be an increasein demand for broadband-intensive ser-vices and applications such as audio, video, and interactive digital television(iDTV), which can then be put at the homeuser’s disposal.

The 10-gigabit Ethernet standard thuscloses the gap between short and longdistance networks, between corporatenetworks, and MANs and WANs.

Economical solution for nodes in distribution point terminalsThe increasing cost pressure on maintain-ing and expanding of backbone infrastruc-ture has network operators look for solu-tions with top cost-performance ratios. The same criteria apply to distributionpoint terminals.

The terminals should be user-friendly andaccessible for servicing. In case of littlespace or unfavourable structural condi-tions, distribution point terminals withmulti-functional capacity are required, toserve as nodes of the entire backboneinfrastructure, i.e. fiber in the loop (FITL),fiber to the curb (FTTC), and fiber to thebuilding (FTTB).

The first/last mile requires an optical pas-sive interface to assure a fast and reliableconnection of point-to-point connectionsor star and ring topologies. In cooperationwith a leading city carrier in Germany,R&M has designed a modular system tomeet this challenge: the FiberCurb.

R&M’s FiberCurb is a space-saving andeconomical solution. It is not only perfectfor purely optical nodes but also for cop-per cabling combinations and ONUs (Op-tical Network Units) – in short, for allexisting and future network structures.

Reliable fiber guideFiberCurb meets today’s cabling require-ments. Every single module features areliable fiber guide. Our picture shows thepatented fiber guide system. The guideeffectively prevents any reduction of theradius below the admissible minimum of40 mm, assuring continuous fiber perform-ance.

The guide is equipped with differentlypositioned lamella for mechanical fiberprotection. Thanks to the screw-type de-sign it is easy to move a group of fibers toa higher or lower level from one particularmounting level. The optical patch cablesare also guided over a radius guard at 40 mm.

One-click contacting will be standard inconnection technique in PCB manufactur-ing. The PCB terminal blocks (PK) fromR&M with Easy Lock are an evolutionaryleap in electronics manufacturing.

Fast and efficiently, the cables are insertedinto connection modules without specialtools. No stripping off is required. The con-nection covers, developed and patentedby R&M, and insulation displacement ter-minations provide a constantly reliable con-tact which at the same time is securelyfixed in the terminal block. In this process, the electrical contact in the terminal ismade by incising the cable insulation as faras the core, fixing the cable mechanically.

Special additional benefit: the clampingpoint is sealed gas-tight to exclude corro-sion of the contact.

With the VS Compact Base VS Compact10-pair Connection Modules can bemounted faster and much more flexiblyon PCBs. Its advantage is the two-partconstruction. As a first step the base issoldered on, and the connection modulecan be selected and fitted at a later time.

The contact is made with IDC technique,so cutting to length and stripping areeliminated, resulting in rapid, reliablewiring. The conductors are wired usingthe simple tool provided by R&M. ThePCB Bases are used in VS Standard dis-tribution cabinets.

Wiring areas:• Wire diameter range patch side:

0.35 – 0.80 mm (26-20 AWG) • Double wiring: 0.35 – 0.50 mm

(26-24 AWG)• Insulation diameter range patch side:

0.60 – 1.60 mm• Double wiring: 0.60 – 1.60 mm• Wire diameter range cable side:

0.35 – 0.80 mm (26-20 AWG)

Main features and potential of the VSCompact PCB Base and VS Compact 10-pair Connection Modules:• PCBs can be exchanged without de-

taching the wiring

• simple, rapid, reliable contact, thanksto IDC

• only the base is soldered to the PCB:distribution modules can be selectedand fitted later

• connecting contact is also suitable forflexible stranded wire

• screw fastening is possible• simple wiring tool• can be rewired• pre-terminated cables can be used• connection, disconnection and normal-

ly open modules and all standard pro-tective gear can be used

• disconnection and test contact inter-face with existing disconnection andtest equipment
