Brain Boogie - Positive Steps in Motion season has just passed and it was another fun and successful set of events, raising awareness and funds for the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Asso-ciation and the local chapters.

Attendance was outstanding in most locations once again. Over 325 participants took part and raised over $50,000 in pledges. In addition to the large amount of money raised, there were numerous sponsors and in kind donations, making the 13th annual Brain Boogie the most successful ever.

Each year participants, volun-teers and staff get together for

fellowship, to raise awareness, and much needed funds for brain injury survivors programs. The money raised is to help fund Chapter activities and provin-cial events for survivors and families.

Moose Jaw kicked off the sea-son on Saturday, August 29 in the beautiful Crescent Park in the downtown area.

A new route made the course even more accessible to those with mobility issues. Glenda James welcomed everyone and Tracey Monette led the stretches this year.

When participants arrived back at the amphitheatre, volunteers had the bbq fired up and hot dogs, burgers and veggie burgers were on the grill. Local teenage musi-cian, Ethan Bretnell entertained the small but enthusiastic crowd. The kids enjoyed the bounce house and everyone enjoyed the festive environment. A local radio station surprised everyone and set up for an on location broadcast through-out the day, the Executive Director and volunteers were interviewed.

Attendance and volunteer input was down this year, but thanks to dedicated pledge earners and some new runners the amount raised was over $3500.

September 12 was a busy day with events being held in Prince Albert, Regina and Yorkton.

Prince Albert came out in full force to support SBIA’s efforts. The beauti-ful day in scenic greenspace near the Elks Hall in Prince Albert saw in addition to many volunteers par-ticipants. Elaine Perkins and the Saskatchewan Royal Purple Asso-ciation continue to have the walk, bbq, games and raffles that have come to mean so much to the brain injury community in the north eastern part of the province. It was a recording breaking year in Prince Albert, over $9500 was raised.

The 2015 Brain Boogie in Regina was, in the words of Ralph Goodale, MP, one of the finest days weather-wise we have had in his memory of past walks.

The walk kicked off with MC Cree-son Agecoutay of CTV introducing Ralph, a long time walk supporter, MLAs Christine Tell and Trent Woth-erspoon who all brought greetings to the gathered group of about 130 walkers and brain injury supporters.

The crowd included a team from Fedex who donated $5000 provin-cially, Team Get Educated who brought in the most money as a team and Gordie Fisher who was the top individual pledge earner.

After a pre walk stretch with the Roughrider Cheer Team the walkers began the walk in style with piper Betty Anne Sinclair leading the way. After the walk those in attendance enjoyed the music of The Relatives as they ate a BBQ lunch, award presentations and prize draws. It was a successful walk, raising over $20,000, under the leadership of Ni-cole Wall and her team.

Yorkton tried a new version of the Brain Boogie this year. Lynette Strom organized a golf tournament and steak night. The fun filled day raised much needed funds for the Yorkton area survivors.

The Saskatoon Chapter decided to hold their Boogie on a Sunday this year – September 13 turned out to be a good fit. Well over 100 people attend the event and over $14000 was raised this year.

Cynthia Block, one of SBIA’s board members emceed the event. Par-ticipants from Kindersley made the trip to Saskatoon this year.

Once again His Worship Mayor Donald Atchison attended and brought messages from the city. After opening remarks the record breaking crowd participated in the warm up lead by Brittany Molesky, from LEAD Pilates.

Participants appreciated the trav-elling water station courtesy of Larry & Joanne Schwan.

After everyone completed the course along the beautiful South Saskatchewan River in Victoria Park, the festival atmosphere really kicked in with a bbq, and family fun.

The bouncy castle, face paint-ing, Warren the Balloon Man, and live music from Dale Swis-tun really added to the celebra-tion. The Saskatoon Fire Dept brought their truck and Aime Decae with the Saskatoon Po-lice Street Legal Safety Program had the “Race Against Drugs” car out. What fun for everyone to see these special vehicles.Participants were grateful to

have Jackie Kilduff owner of Electronic Muscle Stimulation giving muscle massage in the Digi-Light system after walking or running the course.

Thank you to everyone who collected pledges, sponsored a participant, volunteered or attended the 13th annual Brain Boogie. None of this would be possible without your support.

Thank-you to our long-term partners and 2015 Brain Boogie sponsors for their support of the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association in its endeavour to prevent brain injuries and support survivors and their families.

Saying Goodbye to a SBIA Founder

SBIA Summer Students, Anna Saigeon and Jennifer Kimball, were busy from the time university let out until it was time for them to resume their studies.

They visited schools in both Saskatoon and Regina, speaking about brain injuries. The summer was busy one with displays at festivals, side-walk sales, and other events to raise awareness.

Leslie Good Awarded 2015 Tony Reslein Volunteer AwardLeslie Good was awarded the Tony Re-slein Volunteer Award for his hardwork and dedication to the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association.

Good started with SBIA in 1993 after his family moved back to Saskatchewan in 1992 when he retired from military posting in British Columbia. He took early retire-ment due to the brain tumor and subse-quent surgeries.

Not only is Good the treasurer for Regina Chapter of SBIA, after attending Chapter meetings in Regina he started the Moose Jaw Chapter eight years ago.

In addition to his volunteer work with orga-nizations, Good has helped fellow brain injury survivors research, find and apply for benefits and tax breaks. Good also as-sists with transportation to SBIA meetings and events and is a Board member.

Thanks for your dedication Les!

Diana Shirley Block (Wendland)

SBIA is saddened by the loss of one of its founding members, Di-ana Block, who dedicated her time to the organization.

The family announced she passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 17, 2015 after a

long and valiant battle with Multiple Sclerosis. De-spite what was taken from her, she never allowed it to define her.

Diana taught piano lessons for forty years and had a deep connection with her students. She never missed an opportunity to gather friends for a sing-along, bring the accordion to a bonfire or watch Sound of Music with the grandchildren. In tribute to Diana, in lieu of cards or flowers please consider a donation to: Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association.

Brain Injury Canada Needs Your HelpBrain Injury Canada is looking for your input and help, as a person who is liv-ing with a brain injury or a spinal cord injury.

Important Information Brain Injury Canada joined a group called the Neurotrauma to Neuro-recovery (NtoN) Network. The NtoN network is a group of researchers, health care providers, and people with a brain or spinal cord injuries from across Canada.

This group is led by brain and spinal cord injury organizations. The group aims to make Canada a leader in re-search that improves the lives of peo-ple with brain and spinal cord injuries.

The network is applying for funding from a research organization called the Canadian Institutes of Health Re-search. Some of the money will be used to create partnerships between researchers and people with brain and or spinal cord injuries.

Together, the network will conduct meaningful research in areas that impact people with brain and spinal cord injuries.

Brain Injury Canada aims to ensure that clinical care, self-management and policy research is used to im-prove the quality of life of people with brain and spinal cord injuries.

Brain Injury Canada needs your help Please complete this brief survey to help identify research areas that they should invest time and resources in (15 minutes).

SURVEY LINK: http://fluidsurveys.com/surveys/tie-lab/pan-canadian-sur-vey/

This survey is not part of a research study. The survey will help provincial brain and spinal cord associations develop a national strategy to in-clude people with brain and spinal cord injuries in the research process.

If you have any questions or need help completing the survey, please contact Peter Athanasopoulos, Spinal Cord Injury Ontario ([email protected]) or Rick Riopelle, Brain Injury Canada ([email protected]).
