A 13-week senior stAtion officer
development progrAm provides fire officers
with the necessAry knowledge And skills to
be promoted to stAtion mAnAger.
Students are traditionally defned asyoung people embarking on an earlycareer, but at Victoria University,
students come in all ages and rom all
walks o lie.An increasing proportion o VU students are in actalready in the workorce, employed in large or smallorganisations who want to improve their stas skillsthrough customised training.
VUs workplace training has spanned a varietyo industry sectors over the years, in workplacesranging rom the Australian Bureau o Statistics toZoos Victoria.
Among current employees taking advantage oVUs workplace skills training are Williamstownshipbuilders seeking to improve their literacy andnumeracy, local city council workers upgrading theirmanagement expertise and Melbourne fre fghterslearning leadership skills.
In 2010, VU delivered almost two million studentcontact hours o workplace training acrossa range o training modes, including in VUclassrooms, on-the-job, online, or in a customisedcombination o these.
Executive Dean o VUs Faculty o WorkorceDevelopment Grant Dreher says VUsworkplace training is a response to industry andgovernment demand or higher skills and higher-level qualifcations.
Our customised training can help an organisationassess gaps in its existing workorce skills, identiyopportunities or productivity gains, and addnew skills and a sense o sta empowerment, says Dreher.
Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) Leadershipand Development Manager Tony Westcott says a13-week senior station ofcer development programdesigned with VU provides station ofcers with thenecessary attributes, knowledge and skills to bepromoted to station manager.
The program was mapped to VUs Diploma inBusiness and partly aligned to the AustralianNational Training Framework, enabling participantsto gain a fre-fghting management diploma. The program recently won a VU Vice-ChancellorsAward or outstanding industry engagement.
The program involved a strong collaborativerelationship and cultural ft between VU and theMFB, and provided innovative customised training to
meet the changing needs o the MFBs 21st centuryworkorce, says Westcott.
Wyndham City Council was among Melbournesfrst local government councils to oer CertifcateIV qualifcations in local government to its sta.Through VUs Recognition o Prior Learning (RPL)process, long-time employees with ew ormalqualifcations had on-the-job assessment projectsincorporated into their current roles while receivingcredit or the expertise they had developedover the years.(Continued on page 35 >>)

In the rst o a regular columnby the Vice-Chancellor, ProessorPeter Dawkins refects on thepower o education.
In October, I enjoyed attending fvegraduation ceremonies, wonderuloccasions at which we celebrate
the success o our graduates, andat which the University communityhas a chance to pay tribute tonot only those who are achievingacademically, but to those who haveinspired us.
We heard great speeches by fveValedictorians, who spoke on behal o thegraduates. They were: Mr Nussen AinsworthBachelor o Laws; Ms Alison Whan Bacheloro Arts; Ms Anita Milicevic Doctor oPhilosophy; Mr Justin Rhodes Bachelor oEngineering (Mechanical Engineering); andMr Keith Matthews Bachelor o Business,Accounting, Banking, Finance.
We were also privileged to hear rominspirational guest speakers, TheHonourable Michael Kirby AC CMG, MrSimon Garlick Chie Executive OfcerWestern Bulldogs; Proessor Roger Slee
Director Institute o Diversity; EducationalAccess and Success, Ms Natalie OBrienChie Executive Ofcer Melbourne Food &Wine; and Mr Ken Loughnan AO.
One o the common themes which stoodout or me throughout each o the speecheswas the power o education. Additionally, there was a ocus on encouraginggraduates to make a dierence to theworld. This encouragement to make adierence to the world is reinorced bothby the charge to the graduates, which Ias Vice-Chancellor read out towards theend o the ceremony, and as part o theVictoria University vision, which aims to
ensure we are an excellent, engaged andaccessible University, while empowering adiverse community o students to grow theircapabilities and transorm their lives.
Human rights champion and ormer highcourt judge, The Honourable Michael Kirbyreceived an honorary doctorate, andobserved it is important or the graduatesto stand up or social justice.
I encourage you to access a couple othese excellent speeches on YouTube. Byway o example, there were two givenat the ceremony on the aternoon oWednesday 12 October. The frst was byour own Proessor Roger Slee, Directoro the Institute o Diversity, EducationalAccess and Success, who spoke about thevalue o education and the metrics that can
be applied to measuring the investmentin education. Proessor Slee noted thatthose metrics were not just fnancial, butcontextual. The value o education ismost apparent when you dont have accessto it. You can read more about the valueo education by watching Proessor Sleesspeech here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhdRum0NwxY
The second speech was by Dr Anita Milicevicwho was awarded a PhD at the ceremony.Seven years ago she arrived as a reugeerom Croatia with no English languageand a young amily. Since that time shehas undertaken a Bachelors Degree, an
Honours Degree and now a PhD at VictoriaUniversity. This was an extraordinary speechabout the lie experience o a reugee andthe transormational eect o education.
Dr Milicevic also acknowledged theimportance o peers in the journey o lieand learning, and those whose intellect, love and kindness have nurtured mypassion, courage and persistence in mywork. Furthermore, she mentioned theintegrity, respect and transparency inpersonal and collaborative action asvalues she came to respect and recognise atVictoria University, as well as the pursuit oexcellence in everything its sta do.
Alongside those admirable qualities, DrMilicevic cites compassion as a undamentalconcept that she believes should alwaysbe at the very oundation o academicexcellence as well as lie experiences, indeed it is in the very oundation o lie andexistence. I highly recommend you spendsome time listening to this inspiring speechby visiting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwkRZpxhTDs
Listening to the valedictorians speeches is agood way o understanding a little bit moreabout the power o education.
