Unity Run 2011 by Jennifer Creeden

The 2011 Unity Run - our 8th Annual Walk, Wheel or Run in support of Community Living RenfrewCounty South’s transportation program was a resounding success! It was a terrific morning and we hadover 200 participants who completed the course.

It was great to see all the runners and walkers out there. Our Team Challenge was won by theLadies Team from the Scotia Bank: Chris Hunter, Cheryl Emon, Wonnietta Zarb and Karen McNab. Theladies took home the cup based on times in the event, spirit and funds raised. They brought in over$1200!

Our top fundraiser was our very own Debbie McLeod who not only completed the 5km Walk but alsocollected over $600 on her own – thanks Debbie!

Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who helped to make this happen by assisting withthe running clinic, helping with registration, manning all the streets and corners, setting up the hall andarranging all the food and of course cheering on our participants while handing out the medals and prizes!Thank you to our most kind sponsors who make this event so successful for us – we truly appreciate yourgenerosity. Spare Change from 485 Coumbes Lane by Rick McPhail

The guys are all settled into their new house and things couldn’t be better. There have been several birthday barbeques and a very nice Thanksgivingcelebration as well.

Disaster came one evening. While doing laundry the washingmachine all of a sudden stopped working. This machine was bought whenthe guys lived at 90 Opeongo. It was not very old so it was odd that itstopped working. Thought it was just an overloaded fuse… no…was it justunplugged…..no….was it on the wrong setting….noooo. It just refused to

work. A call was made; the repair man came but found not a broken machine but a fistful of coins in theback of the machine. I am talking about several fistfuls of change. There was of course pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters but there was also many loonies and toonies, worth almost $50 in those alone. The totalamount of change was almost $100!

It was decided to have a few take outs for supper or unexpected treats. Here is a photo of the happydudes enjoying the feast, see all the coins on the table?

This was just amazing that that much spare change was washed, went through and over that lengthof time without a problem. Well lesson learned to get the guys to always check their laundry beforethrowing it in the wash; they could get rich just in spare change alone!

Well that’s the exciting news from the guys at 485, who are now looking forward to Christmas!

Peter Tatlow and Eric Fevez had an awesome time at Saunders Farm withthe Bonnechere Manor Day Program. They enjoyed a bumpy wagon ridefinding their way through the maze and meeting new friends on the bus ridethrough the countryside. The cool wind couldn’t dampen the happy facesand great spirits of the companions at the spooky farm.

Community Access Supports (Day Program) in Arnprior hasmoved. We are now located at 106 McGonigal St. in theTowne Centre. Our new building has successfully addressedall the concerns we had at the previous location. We haveample parking, great green space and a well-designedaccessible floor space that is proving to benefit everyone.

Our next goal is to have the green space ‘transformed’into our very own Community Living Courtyard.

We would like to thank everyone who helped to makethis move possible. Feel free to drop in for a tour and sharein our excitement.

We Will Remember You!

Dwane VotourOn November 12, 2011, in his 46th year, our good friend Dwane passed awaypeacefully at Hospice Renfrew. Such ashort life left a great impression on us all.

Dwane created a lasting memoryof words and thoughts: Dwane the Pain,Dwano, Bonehead, Old Man, cords, turtlenecks, fishing. The Ice Shack,Castleford Fishing Derby, FiFi the Frenchmaid, his sense of humour, pranks, pridein his job….

When talking about his work you could hear in Dwane’s voice the pride and joy in what theindividuals brought to him! He was very proud of all their self accomplishments!!

Dwane, your ice shack legacy will live on. We will continue to ice fish this winter alwaysthinking of you.

You go our friend and finally catch “The Big One”, enjoy the fish fry with hot chocolate andBailey’s and butter shots!!

A Bientôt, my friend.

Well the morning of October 2nd did not start off so early thankgoodness!! This year I got to sleep till 6 a.m. not 5 a.m. Igot up early, got ready, called Nicole and said I was ready.

I did the Run for The Cure for the second time in a rowin memory of my mom. The only difference was my dad wasnot around to say “hey you can do it boo berry, mom would beproud of you.” My dad died a year ago.

The Run for The Cure was amazing, there were evenmore people this year than last year.

I got to do the run in a rental wheelchair; I love the seaton this chair. For the run I walked around a lot of places askingpeople to sponsor me and this year I collected $375.
