To My Friends, There are two parts to this epistle. First, a fun part; next a more serious part. You decide. A preacher went to his church office on Monday morning and discovered a dead mule in the churchyard. He called the police. Since there did not appear to be any foul play, the police referred the preacher to the health department. They said since there was no health threat he should call the sanitation department. The sanitation manager said he could not pick up the mule without authorization from the mayor. Now the preacher knew the mayor and was not too eager to call him. The mayor had a bad temper and was generally hard to deal with, but the preacher called him anyway. The mayor did not disappoint. He immediately began to rant and rave at the pastor and finally said, Why did you call me anyway? Isnt it your job to bury the dead? The preacher paused for a brief prayer and asked the Lord to direct his response. He was led to say, Yes, Mayor, it is my job to bury the dead, but I always like to notify the next of kin first! ___________________________________________________________ We resume our Fellowship Meal & Lectionary Study for the fall on September 5th. If you lack a list of Lectionary scriptures, then you may pick it up in the office. These texts are also printed in the Sunday morning worship bulletin for your convenience. ___________________________________________________________ Wesleyan Study In addition, because more than a few people have asked, I am going to offer a study on a Wesleyan view of the Christian faith. We will have these sessions on September 23rd, 30th, and October 7th. The evenings will be 90 minutes. We will begin at 6:00 pm with a generous interlude scheduled. Those who have been lifelong Methodists as well as those who havent will perhaps learn about the history/tradition of our United Methodist church. We will begin with the Epworth Parsonage and move on toward Oxford, the Holy Club, and from where the Methodists came. Methodism is a Protestant denomination that emerged within Anglicanism during the 1700s that sought to inspire a deep evangelical character within the Church of England. Methodism originally was a zealous evangelistic movement that heralded a simple gospel for the common people, championed an evangelical Arminian theology of salvation, pioneered an approach to evangelical sanctification known as Christian perfection, and motivated thousands of ministers who selflessly embraced an itinerant, circuit ridingministry. This ministry often included celibacy and poverty for the cause of Christ. In the 19th century Methodists established colleges, seminaries, and moved more into mainstream evangelicalism. Today the United Methodist Church ranks as the third largest single denomination in America (after Roman Catholicism and the Southern Baptist Convention).
