TRANSCRIPT

I chose Matthew Hoffmann as my connection to Loyola University Chicago because he is my first official professor in the field of sociology. Since Social Work is my major I know I will be needing connections when entering the workforce of Social Work, as well as applying to graduate school. In our conversation Matthew explained that he started working at Loyola when he was a graduate student in the sociology department. Loyola was paying for his graduate education which was another factor in his decision to come here. Nonetheless he was given teaching opportunities while studying here and its been a reliable position ever since. He enjoys teaching at Loyola because of the consistency and momentum that the school provides. When I asked him about what he has learned about himself in his time teaching here, he said that initially he was unconfident in his teaching abilities but he has gained an appreciate for it and realized the strength of his capabilities. He now recognizes the ability to teach is an important part of being a good academic. After this interview I have learned that I do not necessarily want to be a professor like Mr. Hoffmann, but I do want to continue in the sociology department at Loyola. He explained to me that because of our Jesuit denomination, field and social justice work is primarily emphasized here and not many other schools have the same focus. This interview showed me that UNIV was meant to encourage Loyola students to early on socialize with faculty, staff, and other students. The school wants to harbor an environment of community; they want every member to get to know one another because each one is valuable and has something to offer. Loyola University Chicago doesnt want their institution to feel lifeless because it most definitely is the opposite. From this interview experience I will go forth as a Loyola student who wants to speak with other faculty members and make positive connections.
