LANGUAGE COMPETENCIES Indonesian. Competence in this language equivalent to an FSI 4+ (5 point scale). Able to publish research findings in Indonesian and translate in either direction between English and Indonesian. Frequent experience presenting professional papers in Indonesian language. Malay. Language closely related to Indonesian. Written and verbal competence at FSI 4+ level. In addition, I read the Arabic-derived script ("jawi") of Malay and speak regional dialects of Malay spoken in the states of Kelantan, Trengganu, and Kedah.

Science Board for the Louisiana Coastal Area Ecosystem Restoration Program. Assist in reviewing structure and operations of the science and technology component of the Program.

Forum. Member of Science Advisers panel working with progressive restaurateurs, seafood importers and processors, and other entrepreneurs to promote consumption of healthy seafood products harvested in a biologically sustainable and socially equitable manner.

strategy the FAO and The World Bank for improved management of coastal resources in East Asia and the Pacific that meets the goals of better resource management and poverty reduction.

1993 – 1995 Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund. Resource person on legal action focusing on issues of

environmental racism in the Southeastern United States. Prepared testimony in 1995 for presentation to Office of Civil Rights, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for public hearing in Noxubee County, Mississippi.

1993 Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Chief Rapporteur and one of

three plenary speakers at the 1993 meeting of the Indo-Pacific Fishery Commission, Bangkok, Thailand, November 1993.

1991 International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management. Helped develop

long-term strategy for social science research as part of ICLARM's submission for core funding to the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research.

1990 State of Alabama. Used my research on hazardous waste management in Alabama to

support the legal defense team representing the State of Alabama on a case involving hazardous waste management. Suit reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

1989 – 1992 U.S. Agency for International Development, Indonesia: Responsible for design and

professional guidance to series of 10 policy-oriented research projects. Also responsible for providing assistance in drafting a long-term Fisheries Sector Development Strategy for Indonesia. Auburn University is the lead institution for the Fisheries Research and Development Project.

1989 World Bank: Member of Working Group on International Fisheries Research: Critical

Factors Affecting the Management of Small-Scale Fisheries. Participated in week-long Working Group meeting at FAO headquarters in Rome, Fall 1989 and in follow-up work during 1989-90.
