Figure 1. Engaging with students through new technology, new student organizations, and engineering projects.
1. Helps students/others grow personally and intellectually by assisting and encouraging them to
achieve goals (provides attentive direction in the classroom and outside of the classroom).
As part of the GC community, I serve as an advisor to the STEM club and the Hispanic Student
Organization, where students are building their leadership skills as well as their connection to
Galveston College. Some of their activities can be seen in Figure 1. I have also been heavily
involved in bringing STEM week to Galveston College in an effort to encourage our current and
potential students to pursue STEM careers. I have assisted in bringing robotics and 3D printing to
our campus in order to further enhance and encourage student interest and learning in the STEM
fields as well as to the rest of the GC community. I also support students in the BBS and Upward
Bound programs through student advising and participation in summer programs. Additionally, I
support our dual credit students by offering engineering graphics to Ball High students. Through
these activities I provide academic guidance to students who are considering STEM fields.
2. The instructor is knowledgeable in their discipline and able to clearly communicate their
knowledge to others (Follows through on assigned tasks, gives feedback and assistance when
needed, and performs thorough/complete work).
Within the area of engineering education, I am currently developing and redesigning all the
engineering courses for Galveston College. While at Galveston College, I have also been
published in the American Society of Engineering Education and the TYCA based on my work in
developing an introduction to sustainability engineering course and sustainability in composition

II. I am work with the Developmental Education department on hiring committees as well as
impromptu tutoring. I also work closely with the STEM advisor to increase our retention as well
as presenting to the rest of advising to inform them of the changes in engineering and math.
Furthermore as part of the GC community, I have served as a science fair judge, a translator for
Spanish speakers both on campus and at outreach activities. I have also worked with
maintenance and the ATC as a drafter for some of the minor renovations and proposed
renovations. Additionally, I serve on the Advisory Board for the Electrical and Electronics
Program. Outside of GC, I am also part of the Engineering Field of Study committee appointed
by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
3. Approachable, available, and helpful (Always presents a pleasant demeanor, open minded,
creates an atmosphere of caring, and positive problem solving).
The STEM grant has allowed us to literally create a space for STEM students to engage with
faculty and technology outside of class but on campus. I can typically be found either in class, my
office, or most likely the STEM Student Success Center. During interactions with students, I try
to highlight the joys of engineering and creating solutions to the worlds existing problems
through discussions both inside and outside the classroom. I also challenge them to reconsider
their assumptions about the world from both a technical standpoint and from a human standpoint.
