TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13: SAILING TO PALERMO, SICILY

Wake up to the open sea as we spend the morning and afternoon getting acquainted with the Sea Cloud and her illustrious amenities.

The Sea Cloud both is both a private home and a truly glamorous experience beneath white sails. Every walk around its decks will fill you with the unique charm that this great windjammer exudes. Each step is an encounter with the glamour of a bygone age.

Your inner sense of time is all that matters on board - a time that is not measured in seconds, but in magical moments. Let the day go by without a care in the world and with each nautical mile you will feel the stresses of daily life melting away.

At 6:00 PM, we arrive in Palermo, the “Kingdom of the Sun,” and Sicily’s capital. This evening we will have a private visit to the 12th-century Palatine Chapel in the Palace of the Norman Kings. Described by Guy de Maupassant as “the most surprising religious jewel ever dreamt of,” the chapel is known for its extraordinary golden mosaics.

We’ll have a guided visit of the Cappella Palatina. With its glorious mosaics, this chapel is an introduction to the Norman-Arab splendors of Sicily’s capital.

Return to the Sea Cloud for dinner. (B,L,D)

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14: PALERMO

Today we explore the magnificent city of Palermo. We begin with a private morning tour of the home and gardens of Villa Tasca.

The origins of Villa Camastra (later Villa Tasca), date back to the middle of the fifteenth century. Located on the edge of the historic center of Palermo, the Villa is one of the most evocative residences in all of Sicily.

Immersed in luxuriant and variegated flora—among palms, almond trees and acacias—many famous guests have visited this unique and enchanting place. The Villa captured the composer Wagner’s soul, who spent time there in 1881 composing the third act of the opera “Parsifal.” This green oasis, which had a significant vineyard, became one of the oldest regional cellars to produce excellent red wines that enjoyed success in fine restaurants around the world.

We will continue to the Antonio Salinas Archaeological Museum, which is composed in part by private collections purchased or donated to the museum over the centuries. This fascinating museum is dedicated to Antonio Salinas, famous archaeologist of Palermo. It is part of the monumental Complex dell ‘Olivella, with the Church di San Ignazio and its adjacent Oratory.

We return to the Sea Cloud for lunch, rest or enjoy free time for exploration.

Late this afternoon, we join the Duca and Duchessa Lanza Tomasi for cocktails and dinner in their residential apartments of Palazzo Lanza Tomasi. The Palazzo Lanza Tomasi is located in the historic center of Palermo, in the heart of the Kalsa district, known as the Arab Halisa, the elected citadel of the Emirs. The palace, built at the end of the seventeenth century on the

Mura delle Cattive, the sixteenth-century Spanish ramparts, overlooks the splendid promenade of Palermo with its twelve windows and lush terrace, a veritable hanging garden rich in Mediterranean and subtropical essences.

The palace was the last home of Prince Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, the famous author of The Leopard, who spent the last years of his life there, until his death in July 1957, after the destruction of his ancestral palace, Palazzo Lampedusa, in the Allied bombing of April 5, 1943.

We will return to the Sea Cloud and sail to Trapani at 10:00 PM.(B,L,D)

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15: TRAPANI, SICILY

We’ll arrive at the port of Trapani for a morning excursion to the medieval hilltop town of Erice. Erice is a wonderfully preserved medieval town offering the most breathtaking views and a palpable sense of history. Originally an Elymian city (the Elymians were around before the Greeks ever set foot in Sicily), Erice is known for the quality and delicate floral designs of its Majolica ceramics, which, like Marsala wine, are unique to the city. Sitting on the mountain top in Erice sipping Marsala, you can savor the view of the Egadi Islands, Tunisia and Africa in the distance.

We’ll board the Sea Cloud for lunch, and depart at 1:30 PM on our way to the Southern Coast of Sicily, Porto Empedocle. (B,L,D)

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16: PORTO EMPEDOCLE/AGRIGENTO The Greek poet Pindar described Agrigento as “the fairest city inhabited by mortals,” and our day fittingly starts with a guided tour of the unforgettable Valley of the Temples, a complex of 5th-century BC monuments dedicated to Greek gods and goddesses that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Our morning tour will be followed by a gourmet Sicilian lunch at the beautiful Villa Athena. The Villa Athena offers various cooking classes, in which travelers can partcipate in the afternoon.*

Enjoy the afternoon for relaxation and personal exploration in Agrigento. The choice is yours to return to the ship to relax or possibly travel slightly west along the coast to some of Sicily’s lovely beaches.

*Cooking Classes are at an additional expensebeginning at 150 Euros per person.(B,L,D)6

This morning after disembarkation, we’ll tour the fine array of Baroque buildings, palaces, and churches in Valletta, the capital city of Malta, built by the Knights of St John. We’ll take in the Upper Barracca Gardens for a panoramic view of the Grand Harbour, the beautiful St. John’s Cathedral to see the famous Caravaggio painting The Beheading of St. John and the Grandmaster’s Palace, home to the parliament and the offices of the President of Malta.

The afternoon and evening you’ll have free for relaxation and personal exploration.

Our home for the next two nights is the luxurious The Phoenicia Malta.(B)

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20: VALLETTA MALTA

Today we will have an excursion to the prehistoric Megalithic Temples of Malta. These temples are known to be some of the oldest temples in history, with some dating back to before the Egyptian Pyramids and the stone structures of Stonehenge. These extraordinary structures were built during three distinct time periods, roughly between 3600 BC and 700 BC, and some are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The afternoon is free for personal exploration.

In the evening, we will be guests of the noble Maltese family Nicholas and Frances de Piro for cocktails at Casa Rocca Piccola.

Casa Rocca Piccola is a 16th century palace and a “living” museum home to a Maltese noble family. Built in 1580, the palazzo has been the residence of many nobles since its birth. Today,

Nicholas de Piro and his wife Frances reside in the palace. The family originated from the Greek isle of Rhodes and, following an exodus to the islands of Malta, they were welcomed by the local nobility receiving high recognitions by the Knights of Malta for their contributions to education, the arts and the promotion of authentic Maltese costumes and lifestyle.

Dinner this evening is at La Giara located in Casa Rocca Piccola. The menu is based on what the chef Antonio Mammino buys from the markets daily in Valletta. There are fresh homemade pastas, salads, platters and fresh fish (when available) as well as an extensive variety of different desserts.(B,R,D)

THE LEGENDARY SEA CLOUD

The Sea Cloud’s life story is more thrilling than some novels. Sea Cloud is a ship with a soul, imbued by the original owners, Marjorie Merriweather Post and her husband E.F. Hutton in the 1930s.

The elegance of times gone by has been faithfully restored - be it on the bridge or in the blue lagoon, on the promenade deck or in the restaurant. All the impressive marble fireplaces, the charming teak wood benches, the elegant woods, the golden taps and the selected antiques on board the Sea Cloud have created an atmosphere in which her passengers - with all the requirements of modern day living - can sit back and enjoy their voyage on board a majestic windjammer. The ship hosts up to 58 passengers and approximately 60 crew members.
