CH. 1 EXPLORING DATA Connor x2

5 NUMBER SUMMARY AND BOXPLOTSMinimum – the smallest given value on the distributionFirst Quartile – the median of the observations to the left of the overall medianMedian – the middle value of dataThird Quartile – the median of the observations to the right of the overall medianMaximum – the largest given value on the distributionBoxplots can be used for comparing sets of data. For example, we can see how many home runs Babe Ruth hit compared to Barry Bonds from 1920 to 1934

STEMPLOTS Gives a quick picture of the shape of the distribution while including numerical valuesStemplots separate each observation into a stem and a one digit leaf

HISTOGRAMHistograms use rectangles whose area is based on the frequency of a variable

Histograms are typically used to plot frequencies

Stemplots and histograms can be used to display the distribution of test scores in Mr. Shackelford’s math class

PIE CHARTCan be hard to accurately draw by hand but can be easily made on a computer.Always include categories to make up the whole.Perfect graph to show the relationship of each category to the whole.

STANDARD DEVIATION Measures the spread by looking at how far the observations are from the mean.Observing standard deviations can be very helpful when discovering how your SAT score turned out.Its symbol is σ (the greek letter sigma)
