CONSERVATION OF ENERGY
DISCUSSION:
•Where do you get energy from?
•Does your body make energy?
•If you need energy what are you going to do?
•Why don’t you always have energy?
•Where does your energy go?
LAW OF CONSERVATION OF ENERGY
•There is a set amount of energy in the universe.
•All energy is conserved, meaning it is neither
created or destroyed
•Energy can be changed from one form to
another.
CONSERVATION OF ENERGY
• Energy cannot be created or destroyed
• Energy can only be transferred (Changed from one form to
another)
• Heat energy is usually a bi-product of that transfer

ALL FORMS OF ENERGY ARE INTER-CHANGEABLE
DVD: Energy (Discovery)
When I hold the ball above
the ground, what type of
energy does it have?
Once it hits the ground, it doesn’t
have gravitational energy.
Where did the energy go?
We know it was not destroyed so it
must have been converted. What
types of energy did it change into?
Some of that energy is
converted into elastic,
heat, & sound. When
it bounces back up, it
regains gravitational
potential.
COLLISION CREATES HEAT!
Demo: Collision Balls
ENERGY & FRICTION
• Friction turns mechanical energy into heat
WHAT IS THE ORIGINAL SOURCE OF ALL ENERGY IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM?
THE SUN –THE ORIGIN OF ALL OUR ENERGY!
•The Sun is the source for all of our energy in our
solar system.
•The heat caused by pressure and gravity of the sun
causes all energy – even the nuclear reactions!

ON YOUR WHITEBOARD COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLE AND SHOW ME YOUR BOARD WHEN DIRECTED
A bow string being pulled back → the arrow
flies forward → makes a crash as it hits the wall
