project, but it was also to raise awareness of what the college can do for Barton Primary and Medina House Schools". Julie Stewart (Head teacher at Medina House School) commented “It was lovely to see children from two very different schools working so well together supported by the college students. It really was proof of equality and diversity in action. I would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work which resulted in such a fantastic day - the children are still talking about 'going on a plane'!” Mark Snow (Head teacher at Barton Primary School) said "It has been a great project for our Year 5 children. They have worked with the Medina House children and haven't even noticed the fact that these children have a disability, which is lovely to see. They have instinctively just got on and helped the Medina House children to join in. This project has helped to break down barriers between the two schools with differing educational needs. I would now like to develop it even further and try to get parents involved. I would like to get them re-engaged with education and give them the chance to realise that education can be fun too." The Isle of Wight College's Level 3 Business and Tourism student Martin Harding said "We wanted to do something for the community linked to our course content. We researched each country, planned the activities for the day and resourced our costumes. The children have been so happy and excited about 'going on holiday' that we have found it very rewarding. It's been a great success."

Level 3 Business and Tourism students have been working with students from Medina House School and Barton Primary School to do project work and research on four countries, Italy, Spain, Greece and France. The College students then staged and acted out mock holiday scenarios for the youngsters. Each young child was given a mock passport and flight ticket, as if they were going off on holiday. With the college students acting as airport staff and aircrew, the passports and tickets were checked and boarding passes issued. Students acting as air crew went through the procedures one would experience on a real flight. On landing the mock passports were checked again and stamped then the children could visit the four countries. Four class rooms were used. Each class was laid out to represent one of the countries and decorated with flags and articles from the country. College students were dressed in the typical dress worn in each country. The children experienced tasting foods from the different countries and there were different activities for the school children to do e.g. drawing/colouring flags, a piñata (Spain), racing Gondolas (Italy) smelling and tasting cheese (France) making Olympic medallions (Greece) etc. It was a fun day of learning whilst playing and the college students and school children enjoyed the experiences. Rosie Barnard (Equality and Diversity Consultant) said "We gave each student the opportunity to get involved with the community

Politics on the Agenda

Catherine Jackson (A Level Politics teacher) and Ruth Acton (Head of F6rm) took eight students from AS Politics and AS History classes on a visit to the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Organised by the Education Parliament Service they visited each of the chambers and observed a debate by Iain Duncan-Smith (Welfare Secretary) talking about possible cuts to housing benefits. They also had a visit to the Westminster Hall and then a session delivered by a member of the Education Parliament Service on law making and the role of Parliament. The visit fitted very well with Unit 2 „Governing the UK‟ which is part of the AS Politics syllabus looking at the role of Parliament. Catherine Jackson said “It was a good day and I am confident the learners have benefitted from the experience. I am proud of our students - they were very attentive, well behaved and thoroughly enjoyed the visit.”

What’s it Really Like at University? Former BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services students Ben Yates and Chris Chambers visited College and spoke to current Level 3 Public Services students about their experiences of university. Ben progressed to University of Portsmouth to study Criminology with Psychology and Chris went to Canterbury Christchurch University. Both young men talked about their respective universities and the pleasures and pitfalls they encountered. Then they held a questions and answers session to help the learners formulate decisions about the next step in their careers.

Look Good, Feel Better Level three beauty therapy students have teamed up with an international charity, called LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER. The charity supports women and teenagers suffering from the visible side effects of cancer treatment.

The Beauty students give advice about make-up and skin care to make the clients feel better about themselves (a lot of patients have lost their confidence and self-worth, by the time they have been through their cancer journey). Jillian Stanbridge of EMH John Cheverton Centre said “The students from the college are wonderful - they are: Cindy Cantelo, Beth Liptrot, Shannon Cregg, Yasmin Butcher and Marla Wynn.”

Visual Merchandising Second year Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business students created two eye catching window displays for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice shop in Newport, as part of their Visual Merchandising in Retail unit of study. As the theme was Valentines Day, amongst other things, they created a large heart lined with dozens of petals and made valentines cards.

Many of the students purchased goods (from their own money) to make the display even more appealing and brought items in from home to donate to the shop to sell.

A Career in Engineering F6rm Engineering students went to GKN for a tour of the East Cowes facility. They saw winglets being made using CAD software. Then saw how specialist tools were made to produce these parts and how carbon fibre pieces were cut and laid together and finally hardened in autoclaves. Students had an opportunity to investigate apprenticeships and university routes into engineering and the types of jobs and roles that they could encounter in the field.

Their Guides on the tour were Apprentices who are studying at the Isle of Wight College! They were excellent and informative and the trip raised expectations of what lies ahead for the bright and talented engineering students should they pursue engineering professionally. It was good to see how large and successful GKN has become and to be in the heart of a company that caters to so many important clients in the global market Like Boeing, Honeywell and Airbus. The engineering student will also be using this experience to help write their coursework. It was an inspiring visit and lifted aspirations as to what is achievable in the field of engineering.
