Jazz Ensemble Festival November 29 – December 1, 2019

We are extremely happy to welcome you to the Jazz Ensemble Festival, part of the “Amsterdam Blue Note Jazz Nights”!

Over 80 bands will perform in three days in two concert halls of the CvA. From the Junior Jazz College, Jazz Preparatory Course to the master program, almost every student will be showcasing his or her talent. Alongside in the program you will find a complete list of the performing bands and highlight concerts by faculty and special guests, which you can visit on all three days. The playing bands will cover a wide range of musical styles and repertoire, from the tradition “Louis Armstrong Group” to avant-garde “Instant Composing Group” and “The Amsterdam Real book group”, from Brazilian to Javanese Gamelan, from solo performances to Big Band and ‘Eigen Groepen’ (student bands) playing original music. Therefore we would like to invite you to come along to support the students, sit back and expand your musical horizon.

HighlightsFriday November 29, 19:00 • Amsterdam Blue Note JASPER BLOM QUARTET with Nils Wogram

The Jasper Blom Quartet features four internationally acclaimed Dutch jazz musicians, that have been together for more than 14 years. Bandleader and Boy Edgar Prize Winner Jasper Blom writes intelligent compositions covering a wide range of stylistic influences. Supported by the stellar playing of guitarist Jesse van Ruller

and one of Europe’s leading jazz drummers, Martijn Vink and Frans van der Hoeven on double bass, the Jasper Blom Quartet is a true showcase of what melody, rhythm and harmony have to offer in composition and improvisation. The JBQ performs regularly throughout Europe on major international festivals and in clubs.

Being one of the outstanding jazz soloists in Europe, Nils Wogram won the prestigious Albert Mangelsdorff Prize in 2013 and gained a reputation as a technically outstanding instrumentalist, an innovating composer and fearless bandleader. Wogram’s familiarity with both jazz and improvised music, his open approach towards any kind of good music, whether complex or more straight ahead, makes him the perfect guest soloist for the Jasper Blom Quartet.

Buma Boy Edgar prize winner and saxophonist Tineke Postma, pianist Marc van Roon and drummer Tristan Renfrow started their trio in early 2017. The desire to make music in an unconventional line-up; a trio without bass. The traditional sounds are alternated in a natural way. Tineke can play an accompaniment for the

piano and drums and drummer Tristan colors the melodies and harmonies of pianist Marc. The repertoire of this trio consists of their own new compositions and arrangements in styles from modern jazz, pop to classical music.

Sunday December 1, 15:00 • Amsterdam Blue Note LILIAN VIEIRA and MAURICE RUGEBREGT

At the age of 23, the Brazilian-Dutch singer and lyric writer Lilian Vieira (September 11, 1966, Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro) moved to The Netherlands, where she, due to her special timbre, great improvisation skills and charismatic stage presence developed as a noted singer. This is partly due to her role in the Brazilectro group Zuco 103. Vieira – primarily singing in Portuguese – also works with multiple jazz-, soul- and funkbands and various DJs. As a guest vocalist she collaborated on dozens of albums. In the past years she has returned to her musical roots, with the singing of popular Brazilian music and classical acoustic samba that eventually inspired her to record her own solo album.

Lilian Vieira and Maurice Rugebregt have long been tasters of each other’s worlds and music, Jazz e musica Brasileira meet and walk alongside each other, with a huge big smile.

Lysander (Joël Metz group) coach: Yaniv Nachum Lysander is the musical entity of 4 young spirits that share a passion for the exploration of the groove. Playing original as well as their favourite tunes out of the traditional repertoire, Lysander offers a refreshing variety of improvised music.

Masters Joe Henderson group coach: Yaniv Nachum Jazz saxophonist and composer Joe Henderson is well known for his distinct powerful yet warm and graceful sound. Although Henderson’s earliest recordings were marked by a strong hard-bop influence, his playing encompassed not only the bebop tradition, but rhythm and blues, latin, and avant-garde as well. Students use Henderson’s compositional approaches and arranging techniques in their own new arrangements.

Masters & Bachelors Ornette Coleman Group coach: Yaniv Nachum Saxophonist Ornette Coleman is unquestionably one of most important figures in the avant-garde and what became to be known as ‘free jazz’ style. Coleman’s approach to improvisation and composition brought new sounds, new colors and a new attitude to what jazz had become. This ensemble investigated Coleman’s approach to composition, improvisation and Coleman’s use of time and rhythm.

Jazz group composing MA coach: Yaniv Nachum Focusing on the student’s own repertoire, this ensemble provided a set-up of compositional techniques and developed the student’s insight into their own repertoire. Different composition techniques were addressed, and diverse forms are used, from the traditional jazz forms to the structured/free improvisation forms.

Fabien Vuattoux trio coach: Michael Moore “From furious rock riffs to sinuous and impressionistic melodies, while adding interaction and listening as the main ingredients of the music, the band draws inspiration from jazz to more contemporary forms without being classified in any genre distinctions. Interested in structure and sound, balance between composition and improvisation, they combine different approaches to develop their own language. The original material recently recorded show that opportunities and risks are common qualities here; it underlines the special musical understanding these players share.”

This group explored specific strategies and techniques to guide their composition and improvisation. Circles, Aleatoric music, Symmetry, Proportion, Direction and Graphic Notation were used for this concert.

‘Amsterdam Real Book’ group coach: Michael Moore In the 1970s and 1980s in Amsterdam there was a lot of research done into the relationship between composition and improvisation. The composers involved were trained in both the classical and, to some extent, the jazz traditions. They developed their own aesthetics and systems of organization. In this group you will experience some of their pieces as well as those of later generations.

The students learn about free improvisation, finding your voice, and role in the total soundscape.

Burt Bacharach group coach: Michael Moore Throughout the 1960’s the American composer Burt Bacharach composed a large oeuvre of popular hits. His songs are influenced by classical music, bossa nova, and R&B music. He can be seen as the last of the American Songbook composers. His songs, arrangements and and production techniques have had a lasting impact on pop, rock, soul, hip-hop, new wave and jazz artists.

In this ensemble we will learn many of his quirky songs and find ways to open them up to a jazz aesthetic and develop our own arrangements for them.

Johnny Smith coach: Jesse van Ruller This group is a tribute to Johnny Smith, he is a jazz guitarist that was unique during the 50s, 60s and 70s, he opened many doors for the development of jazz guitar.
