THE CHALLENGE

A residential street near Ipswich town centre had been identified for planned resurfacing. Work was scheduled for completion during the daytime, so the client was keen to avoid extended road closures and disruption to local people. Long term durability was also an important consideration to extend future resurfacing intervals and deliver a better return on investment.

OUR SOLUTION

Tarmac recommended ULTITHIN, a polymer modified thin surface course treatment. It provides a long lasting alternative to microasphalt and surface dressing. ULTITHIN is designed for enhanced workability, to improve compaction and finish, particularly around areas of detail like ironwork and junctions. It has also been shown to improve ride quality and reduce noise for local residents, an important factor when resurfacing estate roads.

RESULTS AND BENEFITS

Work was completed over two days, with 178 tonnes of ULTITHIN asphalt being laid at 20mm thickness. The material performed well on site and the client was impressed with the quality of the finish: "In my opinion it's a good material and effective alternative to surface dressing. We achieved a good finish and ride quality was much better than could have been achieved with a surface dressing." Joe Syer, Contracts Manager.
