Constantinian Masonry by Chronicle Herald Published on October 18th, 2008 The Masonic body referred to as the Red Cross of Constantine is officially The Masonic and Military Order of the Red Most Illustrious Knight Companion John R. Dollimount Grand Sovereign of the Grand Imperial Conczave of Canada, Red Cross of Constantine Cross of Constantine and the Order of the Holy Sepulchre and St. John the Evangelist. The purpose of the Constantinian Orders are to commemorate the first elevation of Christianity from the position of a despised and proscribed heresy to that of a legally recognized and honoured religion to cultivate the social virtues, appeal to the intellectual and moral qualities, preserve as far as possible the customs of the fraternity and bring about good fellowship and understanding between all branches of Masonry. Knights Companion of the Order meet in Conclaves of the Red Cross of Constantine and a member must be a Royal Arch Mason in good standing and subscribe to a belief in the Christian religion as revealed in the New Testament. Membership is by invitation and each Conclave has a prescribed membership limit. Most Illustrious Knight Companion John R.Dollimount, Grand Sovereign of the Grand Imperial Conclave of Canada, Red Cross of Constantine. The Order's existence has been traced to 1780. It was reorganized in 1804 by Walter Rodwell Wright. From those beginnings it has spread around the world as part of the extensive Masonic family of organizations. A number of Conclaves were established in Canada in the 1860's and 1870's. Additional Conclaves were established in the 1930's one of them being Royal Edward Conclave No. 8 in Halifax established in 1936. This Conclave continues to meet regularly. In 1936 the Grand Imperial Conclave of Canada was formed and the Conclaves in existence at the time came under the new Grand Conclave's jurisdiction. The Grand Imperial Conclave is presided over by a Grand Sovereign. Most Illustrious Knight Companion John R. Dollimount of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia is the current Grand Sovereign, having been elected and installed for a two year term in August 2007. Knight Companion Dollimount has been a Mason for twentynine years having joined Canam Lodge No. 7219 in Stephenville, Newfoundland in 1979. He has held senior positions in several of the Masonic bodies including District Grand Master for Western Newfoundland of the Grand Lodge of Newfoundland and Labrador; Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Newfoundland; and is also presently the Deputy Grand Master of the Supreme Grand Council Eastern jurisdiction of Canada Royal and Select Masters.
