Summertime… and the Drinking is Healthy-ish

A moderation movement may be afoot, but consumers still want their fun, and flavor, in the sun.

AS I WRITE THIS LETTER, THE PHILLIES RECENTLY SIGNED Bryce Harper. Daylight Savings Time starts this weekend and the Fightin’ Phils will host the Atlanta Braves at

3:05 PM on the 28th of March. I can’t wait to stock my refrigerator with high-end, low-alcohol beers (not to mention hard seltzers, shandys, shrubs & even kombuchas!) to have on hand for me and my wife, or anyone who might drop by, on a sunny summer day. For me, there’s nothing like watching a ball game with a nice, cold one in hand.

Dry January may have ended months ago, but the practice of foregoing alcohol for 31 days, has created a mindset – particularly for the health-conscious consumers no matter what their age, that drinking is some kind of bad habit. Did you know that now there’s something called Sober October? People who observe Sober October refrain from drinking for another 31 days as a cleanse before indulging themselves over the winter holidays.

There is good news though. I have noticed that guests are more likely to say “yes” when offered a drink if I say, “Hey, I’m having a nice, cold Sam Adams Porch Rocker and it’s only 4.5% ABV. Why don’t you join me?” The point I’m driving home is one I’ve made before. People might be drinking less, but most won’t deny themselves a great tasting adult beverage. It just has to be something of quality, that suits their mood and the occasion. And let’s remember that the word “quality” means high-end, anything that sells at retail for at least $25 a case.

That’s why this edition of Heady Times shines a light on beers that are healthy-ish, and full of flavor. Premier Portfolio – the cover story, highlights the innovative, high-end products from Constellation and the Brewer Highlight discusses Heineken 0.0, a no-alcohol beer that’s selling very well in Europe. There are many more products like these making their debut. Can you imagine the visual impact of a small display for something like Dogfish Head Slightly Mighty (95 calories, 3.6g carbs), Stone Notorious P.O.G. (4.5% ABV) or Cape May The Bog Shandy (3.9% ABV)? It’s guaranteed to stop your customers in their tracks and, of course, improve your bottom line.

Cheers,

Dominic Origlio President

Origlio People Get The Job DoneDeliveringTHE TASTE OF EXCELLENCE

Mike McAnultyDirector of Finance

How long have you been with Origlio Beverage? On July 1st it will be 17 years.

What positions have you held within the company? Controller and Director of Finance.

What does your current job entail? I am involved in many things including: insurance, taxes, audits, financial reporting, cash management, budgets, retirement programs, accounts receivable, accounts payable and the preparation of financial statements.

What do you like most about your job? I am mostly on the defensive side of the ball, so my job is not always glamorous. But I do enjoy the beer business and the ongoing challenges we face. Although we are in a mature industry, it is changing and there are obstacles to overcome each day. It never gets boring. I also work with a great group of people. The finance staff works very hard and they’re all good people.

What does it take to be a top-notch Director of Finance? One of the main priorities of my job is to protect the assets of the company. Therefore, I need to have a set of eyes on everything. There are literally millions of transactions that need to be maintained throughout the year. I utilize our internal systems to extract information that will help manage the future of our operations. I need to be able to adapt to our changing environment.

Harold West-BushDelivery Service Representative

How long have you been with Origlio Beverage? 5 years.

Which areas do you service? The core of my territory is Roxboro, Manayunk, Chestnut Hill and West Oak Lane/Mt. Airy, but I also service some of Fairmount and other parts of North Philly.

How do you provide the best service to customers? I believe that DSRs are the face of the organization, so we need to maintain a positive attitude and be willing to go above and beyond for our customers. Gaining the trust of a retailer can be difficult, so doing small things to show that you have their best interest at heart is important. For example, I will organize their cold-boxes, rotate the beer and share my knowledge of our products.

What do you like to do when you’re not working? My family and I love music, so when I’m not working, I enjoy going to the recording studio to support the family record label, OBH Records.

What do you like to do when you’re not working? I enjoy playing golf, relaxing on the beach and spending time with my family.

If you could be anywhere drinking any beer, where would you be and what beer would be in your hand? A Guinness in an Irish pub or a Corona on the beach.

If you could be anywhere, drinking any beer, where would you be and what beer would you have in your hand? I would be in any tropical climate, with an ice-cold Heineken in my hand.

W ITH BRANDS LIKE CORONA, MODELO AND PACIFICO growing year after year, Constellation continues to dominate the high-end beer segment. And its latest

innovation, Corona Premier, is already the 10th best-selling beer in the category.

High-End Means High Profits

While at first glance beer sales have remained mostly flat during the last few years, a closer look reveals that the high-end has been on fire – so much so that experts are predicting that all category growth in beer over the next three years will come from high-end segments. Imports, FMBs and ciders, all of which make up the segment, are offsetting declines in “mainstream” and low-end segments. Constellation’s portfolio of brands accounts for over 50% of the high-end segment’s growth, all on its own. As consumers continue to “trade up”, Constellation gives drinkers choices that best fit their lifestyles. And for 2019, Constellation has even more products coming through the pipeline to extend its winning streak.

Corona Premier

Corona and Corona Light continue to drive Constellation’s success, but last year’s launch of Corona Premier had the beer industry buzzing. Believe it or not, Corona Premier is now the 10th best-selling brand in the high-end segment – an incredible achievement for a brand that’s not even a year old. It’s also the #1 high-end share gainer with almost 75%

of its volume being sourced from outside the Constellation portfolio. It’s been a strong start for Corona’s first major innovation in over 25 years. Perhaps most surprising is that Corona Premier’s growth has thus far not cannibalized Corona Light’s success. Some markets even saw Corona Light grow in 2018, a sign that the future is bright for both brands.

Billed as a “smooth, perfectly balanced lager with only 90 calories and 2.6g carbs”, Constellation maintains there is still a ton of runway for Premier. In keeping with their ambitious rollout, Constellation recently introduced Premier draught, which will present new opportunities for consumers to enjoy this light beer alternative on-premise. Premier draught will capitalize on the brand’s strong momentum, as well as create healthy incremental volume at retail.

As a brand that’s differentiated by its low carb and low-calorie profile, Corona Premier continues to target mature, sophisticated consumers and it’s the premium choice for health-conscious drinkers.

Three Refreshing Innovations

New from Constellation this year is Corona Refresca, a premium spiked refresher that “brings the tropics of Mexico to you!” Available in Passionfruit Lime and Guava Lime flavors, these new malt beverages (not to be confused with hard seltzers) are sessionable at 4.5% ABV and boast crisp, natural flavors that are never too sweet. In limited test markets, Refresca has been exceeding expectations, especially in the retail chain space.

After a successful first year in the market, SVEDKA seltzers are getting a fresh look and a focused package. Recently

reformulated with 6% ABV (up from 4.5%) Ruby Red Grapefruit, Wild Strawberry and Cucumber Lime will all transition to one variety 12-pack, an essential package for any retailer looking for refreshing

Corona PremierIt’s less than a year old, but Corona Premier is already one of the hottest products at retail.

• Premier is the #10 brand in the high-end segment.*

• It’s the #1 high-end share gainer.

• Best of all, 75% of its volume is sourced outside the Constellation portfolio, which means there’s been little to no

cannibalization of Corona Light.

• Corona Premier is now available on draught, capitalizing on the brand’s strong momentum and creating a

high-end opportunity in the on-premise.

This smooth, perfectly balanced lager is only 90 calories with 2.6g carbs. It’s a beer for health-conscious consumers who are looking for a high-end product that’s a light beer

alcoholic seltzers, blended with premium natural flavors. Also check out new Modelo Chelada Limón y Sal, made with natural lime and salt.

Modelo Tops 100 Million Cases – Is Pacifico Next?

To put it plainly, in recent years, Modelo has exploded in popularity. Over the last five years, it has become the #1 growth family in the beer category and recently topped 100 million cases sold in 2018. And Constellation’s aspirations for this brand remain high. With a new emphasis on media spending,

especially through sports and venue sponsorships, Constellation foresees growing awareness and continued success with Modelo’s consumer base.

Constellation is looking to apply Modelo’s winning strategy to make Pacifico the next 100 million case brand. Last year marked the first time Constellation advertised Pacifico nationwide and the investment paid off. In new advertising markets Pacifico grew nearly 20%, making it a top 4 growth brand, with significant runway still ahead. In 2019, Constellation will further increase its media investment behind Pacifico and launch new liquid & package innovations (including 15-pack cans in select test markets) to reach new consumers. So don’t be surprised if you see Pacifico quickly become the next big national beer brand.

With last year’s successful growth and an aggressive strategy for 2019, Constellation’s industry-leading, high-end products are prepared to continue to achieve new heights.

* High-end brands are those that retail for $25 per case, or more

BrewerHIGHLIGHTHeineken 0.0 “During a meeting? After a workout? Before driving? Have a beer. Seriously, now you can.”

So goes the mission statement of Heineken 0.0 – the world’s best tasting beer brewed without alcohol.

Already a major hit in the UK, Russia & Spain, we sat down with a few members of Heineken’s brand team: Ashley Phelps, Santiago Murphy and Michelle Sauer to learn more about this innovative product, taking the beer world by storm!

1. Heineken 0.0 was inspired by consumers’ rising interest in wellness and moderation. “We wanted to provide a great tasting brew that is in lock-step with the rising cultural trends around living a balanced lifestyle. Heineken 0.0 empowers people who want that balance, without giving up occasions that call for a beer. It’s a zero-alcohol option with zero trade-offs.”

2. We love beer! And sometimes you want to enjoy a refreshing brew, but not the alcohol. Heineken calls these “non-beer moments”, a new opportunity for consumers. “Heineken 0.0 opens up new possibilities. This zero-judgment beer allows consumers to do more.”

3. Over 30% of adults don’t drink alcohol. Heineken 0.0 provides an opportunity for retailers to specifically target these customers.

4. The taste profile of Heineken 0.0 can’t be beat! Especially for those who love beer. “Heineken 0.0 is not a replacement, but an addition to a beer lover’s portfolio. It tastes exactly like a classic Heineken.”

5. Developing the best tasting, non-alcoholic beer was no small feat. “Removing alcohol from regular 5% Heineken would have been easy, but it wouldn’t deliver the best tasting non-alcoholic beer. We wanted to push the boundaries, so we gave our Master Brewers a blank sheet of paper and challenged them to brew a perfectly balanced, non-alcoholic lager from scratch.”

6. Like original Heineken, Heineken 0.0 is made with all-natural ingredients. “0.0 is double brewed with natural ingredients, which are the same as the ones used to make Heineken (water, barley malt, hop extract and Heineken A-yeast). We gently remove the alcohol with vacuum distillation and blend the brew to perfection with natural flavors.”

7. Heineken 0.0 aims to be the go-to option without alcohol on the menu, creating the perfect opportunity to up-sell to consumers, who usually stick to water at on-premise accounts.

8. Expect to see tons of marketing support throughout the year – over $50 million worth to be exact. “The Now You Can campaign positions Heineken 0.0 as a cool, non-alcoholic choice for all moments and social occasions.”

Heineken Brand Team: Santiago Murphy, Lorenda Alward, Meredith Kiss, Rob Ryder, Ashleigh Phelps, Michelle Sauer and Raul Lopez

Heineken 0.0 sales increase when placed in the beer section, not the non-alcoholic section. “Keeping Heineken 0.0 next to the original, encourages consumers to also pick up a Heineken 0.0.” And it stays fresh on the shelf for over a year!

0 Alcohol. 0 Trade-offs.

Yardley Beer CompanyThe Garbarino family is selling beer, once again.

A LARGE STOREFRONT LOCATED JUST OFF THE CALHOUN ST. BRIDGE to Trenton, a five-minute drive from Yardley’s Main Street and two minutes from Route 1, sat vacant for quite some time. That is,

until last year when Charles Garbarino III saw an opportunity to turn the building into what is now Yardley Beer Company. This less-than-a-year-old store has quickly turned into a go-to hotspot for beer lovers. Heady Times had the chance to sit down with Charles, a.k.a. Chuck, manager of Yardley Beer Co., who explained how the business became a reality and how they’ve found a place in the community.

Heady Times (HT): When and how was Yardley Beer Co. started?

Chuck Garbarino III (CG3): We officially opened on August 8th of 2018. Years ago, the building was a PA State liquor store, and after that, a Radio Shack. But it sat vacant for some time. My family and I heard through the grapevine that it was for sale and we took advantage of the opportunity. My family has always been in this business. My father’s first job was pushing a broom through a beer distributor.

HT: How has business been?

CG3: It’s been growing a lot faster than we expected. We try to accommodate everyone by continually bringing in new beers. People don’t just buy cases anymore – there’s a bigger focus on 6-packs, 4-packs and individual bottles because people want to try something new and save some money. Customers are beginning to trust and rely on us and they appreciate our great selection and fair prices.

HT: You offer “make your own 6-packs”. Do they sell well?

CG3: Yes. Mix-a-six is very popular. People can explore their tastes, without draining their pockets. And this way, they aren’t stuck with five more bottles of a beer they don’t care for.

HT: Are your customers price conscious?

CG3: In the beginning, we were afraid to bring in some of the higher-end, more expensive beers. But we’ve quickly realized that craft drinkers aren’t as price conscious. They know what they like and they’re willing to pay for it. People seem very excited that we carry the pricier, limited offerings.

HT: Are your Friday samplings popular with consumers?

CG3: Yes! They’re popular with breweries and customers. We’re booked for the next three months! We want customers to try different styles and breweries want to show off their new beers. The goal is to show consumers that new things are available and give them a taste of something they might not otherwise buy, but are curious about. We have customers who will come by weekly to check out the tastings. We hope they’ll tell their friends.

HT: What services does Origlio offer that you enjoy or take advantage of?

CG3: In my dad’s day, everything was done on paper. You called your sales rep or wholesaler to see what new products were coming out

Owner of Yardley Beer Co., Jane Garbarino with her son, store manager Chuck Garbarino III

and you wrote down your orders. Now, everything is digital. Origlio’s online ordering saves us hours. Using an iPad simplifies everything and makes ordering beer and inventory management so much easier. The Sunday emails are also helpful and have become a big part of our routine. I wake up every Sunday and check my email to see which beers are being released and add them to our order. It’s great.

Interstate DrafthouseChecking in with Philly’s most “Instagram-able” craft beer bar.

WHEN BOB RITCHIE AND MICHAEL MCCLOSKEY, TWO FISHTOWN natives, discovered that one of the neighborhood’s most eclectic and unique bars was going up for sale, they pounced

on the opportunity, becoming first-time bar owners. Interstate Drafthouse has been a beer lover’s staple since 2011 and it’s one of Philly’s most instantly recognizable bars, due in part to its wild décor. It’s also one of the friendliest establishments in the city. Heady Times sat down with Bob and Michael to learn why this bar still feels like “a comfy pair of jeans.”

Heady Times (HT): What’s Interstate Drafthouse’s history and how did you two become owners?

Bob Ritchie (BR): Mike and I have known each other since grade school. We grew up in Fishtown, literally around the corner from where the bar is now located. Prior to owning this place, I was in the accounting field. I was actually the accountant for this bar. It’s been open since 2011, but we’ve owned it for about a year and a half.

Mike McCloskey (MM): We looked at a lot of bars before we decided on this one. I teach at Temple, so we’ve been looking in the area. This one fell into our laps at the right time, and it was the right fit for us.

HT: How did the transition take place?

BR: We knew the previous owner well. He was looking to get out of the business and move on. He came to us for accounting advice. So, we talked to him about the numbers and what he’d be looking to sell the bar for. That’s when we realized this place was perfect for us. So, we pulled the trigger and bought it.

HT: What’s it like to own a bar in the neighborhood you grew up in?

MM: It’s fun because we get to work with our friends and serve our friends who still live in the area. But, we also love being here for the new people who’ve made Fishtown their home. We’re lucky in that Interstate Drafthouse appeals to old and new [residents]. It’s a place where they come together. Some Fishtown establishments skew one way or the other, but we get to be right in the middle, which is good for us.

BR: We’re not new and shiny like some of the more recent bars in Fishtown, but we like it that way. Our kitchen is pumping out really good food and that’s something we’re very proud of. The food is a big reason we attract new customers and keep existing customers coming back. We also have one of the better tap lineups in town. It’s constantly changing, and we keep both our beer and our food prices as affordable as we can, so as far as value goes, we’re one of the best options in the neighborhood.

HT: Tell me more about your beer selection… it seems like it runs the gamut.

MM: It really does. Our beer list can go up against any in Fishtown. We have something for everyone here. Bob has really taken our beer selection to another level. We may be the only bar in the area that gets Heady Topper and sells it alongside Shiner Bock and Tecate.

BR: We want to be the bar that people can walk into and get a city-wide special, or a rare beer for $9.

HT: The décor has a style all its own – what inspired this particular look?

BR: We always say we live in the Instagram generation and this is a very Instagram-able bar. There’s something everywhere you look. Sometimes we decorate for Halloween and no one notices because it always looks crazy. It’s part of the draw. It’s what makes us special. We want to hold true to the vibe this bar has always had. At the end of the day, we want to be a place where people can enjoy themselves. I like to compare this place to a pair of comfy jeans. You walk in and instantly feel comfortable.

Refreshing and easy to drink, this latest riff on craft beer’s most iconic style is, in a word – RADICAL. Brut IPAs will appeal to anyone who loves dry, white wine or even champagne. Could this be the IPA for IPA haters?

India pale ales, or IPAs, have been the mainstay of the American craft scene for a long time. Brewmasters have dazzled our palates with hop-forward variations of the style ranging from sessionable to palate-wrecking.

No matter how big or crushable, these IPAs were reliably hoppy. That is, until now…

Brut IPAs, quite literally, have turned the style on its head.

Bruts are crisp, balanced, light-bodied and dry, with light fruit flavors and floral hop aromas. If this sounds more like a lager or sparkling wine (it is often compared to the best champagne), you aren’t far off. Some have even said that Brut IPAs remind

them of craft beer’s best pale ales. Think of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

But how can an IPA be all these things and still be considered an IPA?

Borrowing from winemakers play books, the brewmasters add an enzyme called amylase after fermentation. Amylase gobbles up the sugar that the yeast failed to digest, yielding a beer with the characteristics of a great, dry, white wine.

These are some of our favorites…Abita Stratosbeer Brut IPA

Characterized by its champagne-like body and unbelievably dry finish, Abita Stratosbeer Brut IPA is delicately balanced, with little bitterness, yet distinguished by fruity hop aromas and flavors.

Ballast Point Brut IPA

A bone-dry IPA turned liquid gold, Ballast Point Brut IPA features a light body matched only by its light bitterness. But don’t be fooled, this beer is exploding with juicy, citrus hop character.

Sierra Nevada Brut IPA

Brewed for a bone-dry, champagne-style finish, late hop additions give Sierra’s Brut IPA a balanced bitterness and a bright pop of citrus flavor.

Sixpoint Sparkler

The hop character is incredible, but the body of the beer is what really sparkles… Sixpoint Sparkler is brewed to be extra dry and effervescent. Think IPA meets a dry, sparkling wine: an extremely refreshing and repeatable juice bomb with mild bitterness.

Peak Sparkle

This bubbly, crisp and flavorful Brut IPA is made with some of Peak’s favorite hops. It sparkles like champagne, drinks like a session and tastes like a dank, New England-style IPA.
