Social objectives of the State includeeducation, health and cultural sectors andthe government has laid down plans toimprove every sector and is implementinghealth care promotion programmes to seethat every citizen is healthy and strong.

The government is extending healthcare services to enable the people to enjoylongevity and to be free from any disease.New advanced general hospitals and specialistand teaching hospitals have been built invarious parts of the country including borderareas. Moreover, special equipment ofinternational standard to provide accuratediagnosis and better treatment has also beengiven to these hospitals.

New hospitals, dispensaries and ruralhealth care centres have been openednationwide and specialists, doctors, nurses andhealth staff have been appointed. Thegovernment can now provide a wide range ofpublic health care services in the whole country.

Prevention and control of disease is animportant part of medical care. With theprovision of the requirements on diagnosisand treatment occurrence of new diseasescan be prevented. In addition, disease controlprogrammes on AIDS, TB and malaria arebeing launched in cooperation with WHO.Eradication and treatment of drug addictsand rehabilitation tasks are being undertakenconstantly.

With the greater efforts of thegovernment for public health, the people willbe able to live longer and enjoy higher healthstandard.

NAY PYI TAW, 11 Aug—The Government ofthe Union of Myanmar has agreed to the appointmentof Mr Aloke Sen as Ambassador Extraordinary andPlenipotientiary of the Republic of India to theUnion of Myanmar in succession to Mr BhaskarKumar Mitra.

Mr Aloke Sen was born in 1950. He holds apost graduate degree in English. Mr Aloke Senjoined the Indian Foreign Service in 1976. Sincejoining the Indian Foreign Service, he had served invarious capacities in the Ministry of External Affairsas well as the diplomatic missions of India inAnkara, Dhaka, Ottawa, Algiers and Tashkent. Hewas a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of ExternalAffairs, New Delhi from 1997 to 2001 and heserved as Ambassador of India to Turkey from 2001to 2005. He is currently serving as Ambassador ofIndia to Cambodia.—MNA

Russia bombs Georgian militaryairfield near Tbilisi airport

MOSCOW, 10 Aug— Russian planesbombed a military airfield early Sundaynear the Georgian capital’s internationalairport, news reports said.

Beef recalled after cases of poisoningL OS ANGELES, 10 Aug

— A hamburger packingplant in Los Angeles hasrecalled 153,630 pounds ofraw beef after as many as 70people in Virginia havecome down with foodpoisoning, the PasadenaStar-News reported onSaturday.

listed broker, reported that its first-half net profit hadrisen 13.3 percent year-on-year to 4.77 billion yuan(647.4 million US dollars).

Revenue was 10.91 billion yuan, up 2.57 percent,with earnings per share of 0.72 yuan, the company saidin a release to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

Underwriting income reached 27.15 billion yuan,up 96.94 percent, while income from the traditionalbrokerage business fell30.44 percent to 4.62 billionyuan amid the broad decline of China's stock market.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index is downmore than 57 percent since it peaked in mid-October.

CITIC's shares fell 4.55 percent to 21.39 yuan onFriday, down more than 80 percent from their peak inearly November.

According to CA chairman Subas Nemwang, therelevant committee of the parliament will initiate theprocedure of the election after getting the officialletter, reported nepalnews.com website.

China’s 5th national caring AIDSorphan summer camp opens

BEIJING, 10 Aug —About 100 childrenorphaned by AIDS/HIVcame from 14 counties ofsix provinces to join in the5th national summer campfor AIDS orphans whichopened here Saturday.

Airline industry woes threaten O’Hare expansion

CHICAGO, 10 Aug —Soaring gas priceshave claimed plenty of victims —fromSUV sales to stock market portfolios.

They now threaten to claim another:the expansion of one of the world’sbusiest airports.

Chicago wants to complete theexpansion of O’Hare InternationalAirport, which relies heavily on revenuefrom cash-strapped airlines, by 2014 —two years before it hopes to host theSummer Olympics.

But carriers serving Chicago nowappear reluctant to put up more moneyto finish the job because high fuel costshave cut so deeply into industry revenue,forcing airlines to raise fares, slash flightsand lay off workers.Chicago officialssay the expansion project is critical, andnot just for the city and state economy.

New runways and a new terminalenvisioned in the project, they say, willgreatly reduce delays that now gum upair traffic nationwide.Critics have

Province in two rounds on Friday afternoon and evening to disperse rain for the2008 Olympics Opening Ceremony, said Beijing weather officials on Sunday.

Summary of observations recorded at 09:30 hr MST:During the past 24 hours, rain have been scattered in KayahState, fairly widespread in Shan State and Magway Divisionand widespread in the remaining States and Divisions withisolated heavyfalls in Mon State and upper Sagaing Division.The noteworhty amounts of rainfalls recorded were Nay PyiTaw (0.44) inch, Ye (3.15) inches, Kalay (3.11) inches, Shwegyinand Coco Island (2.99) inches each, Putao and Nyaunglebin(2.68) inches each, Maungtaw (2.60) inches , Mawlaik (2.08)inches, and Theinzayat (2.04) inches.

Maximum temperature on 9-8-2008 was 85˚F.Minimum temperature on 10-8-2008 was 70ºF. Relative hu-midity at (09:30) hours MST on 10-8-2008 was 100%. Totalsunshine hours on 9-8-2008 was (1.0) hour.

Rainfall on 10-8-2008 was (1.09) inches at Mingaladon,(1.18) inches at Kaba-Aye and (0.48) inch at Central Yangon.Total rainfall since 1-1-2008 was (70.31) inches at Mingaladon,(79.21) inches at Kaba-Aye and (93.98) inches at CentralYangon. Bay inference: Accrding to the abservations at (09:30)hrs MST today, the low pressure area over North West andadjoining West Central Bay has slightly intensified into a tropi-cal depression and it is crossing the Orissa Coast of India. It isforecast to move West-Northwest direction without furtherintensifying and cross inland of India on today’s evening.Monsoon is moderate in the Andaman Sea and vigorous inthe Bay of Bengal.

Forecast valid until evening of 11-8-2008: Rain will bescattered in Shan and Kayah States, Magway Division, fairlywidespread in lower Sagaing and Mandalay Divisions andwidespread in the remaining areas with likelihood of isolatedheavyfalls in Rakhine State, Ayeyawady and Yangon Divi-sions. Degree of certainty is (80%).

State of the sea: Squalls with rough sea will be expe-rienced at times off and along Deltaic, Gulf of Mottama, off andalong Rakhine Coasts. Surface wind speed in squall may reach(45) to (50) mph. Seas will be moderate elsewhere in Myanmarwaters.

Doctors fall short on heartdisease prevention

NEW YORK, 10 Aug— Some doctors are not makingthe grade when it comes to helping their patients wardoff heart disease, a new survey suggests.

The survey, of nearly 900 US primary care doctors,found that many do not follow practice guidelines onmanaging patients who are at elevated risk of heart andblood vessel disease. “Despite the benefits demonstratedfor managing cardiovascular risks, gaps remain inprimary care practitioners’ management of risksaccording to guideline recommendations,” concluderesearchers in a report in the journal BMC FamilyPractice.

“Patients should talk to their physicians aboutsetting goals together for reducing blood pressure andcholesterol and making a plan to achieve the goals,”lead researcher Dr Hamidreza Doroodchi, fromBirmingham, Alabama-based Outcomes, Inc, noted incomments to Reuters Health. — MNA/Reuters

NEW YORK, 10 Aug— An Internet-basedblood-sugar monitoringprogramme appears tohelp people with type 1diabetes better managetheir condition, re-searchers report.

Type 1 diabetes, alsoknown as insulin-dependent diabetes,usually strikes people intheir teens and twenties,and requires regularinsulin injections andclose monitoring of bloodsugar, or glucose.

For the new study,researchers looked atwhether an online

programme in “bloodglucose awarenesstraining” could help type1 diabetics better managethe disease.

The programme,dubbed BGAThome, isan adaptation of well-studied programme thatuses group sessions toteach diabetics tactics forpredicting and preventingblood sugar ups-and-downs — such as keepingdaily diaries on glucoselevels and recordingsymptoms associatedwith sugar lows.

Hu meets Putin, proposingfurther cooperation

BEIJING, 10 Aug— Chinese President Hu Jintaomet on Saturday with Russian Prime Minister VladimirVladimirovic Putin and proposed further bilateral andmultilateral cooperation in diverse fields to achievecommon development.

“China and Russia are forging ahead with thepartnership of strategic cooperation toward theirestablished goals, and the development of bothcountries are faced with opportunities and challengesat the same time,” Hu said.

The two countries should further enhance strategiccooperation in three aspects, Hu proposed.

First, the two countries should continue to jointlypromote global multipolarization and democracy ininternational relations, and establish a fair andreasonable international political and economic neworder.

Second, China and Russia should enhance politicalcooperation and cement multilateral cooperation.

NEW DELHI, 10 Aug—India and South Asiantrading block ASEAN havefinally concluded talks ona free trade agreement(FTA), sorting out long-standing differences overproposed tariff cuts insensitive farm productssuch as palm oil, theEconomic Times websitereported Saturday.

The India-ASEANtrade negotiations com-mittee, which met in Bruneithis week, managed toresolve pending issues andsealed the deal, whichwould result in tariffelimination on four-fifthsof all traded commoditiesin a phased manner overthe next 10 years.

Trade ministers fromthe 10 ASEAN countriesand India will meet later

this month to formallyapprove FTA, followingwhich the legalframework for the dealwill be drafted. Theagreement will be signedby heads of states duringthe next ASEAN summitin December in Bangkok.

The FTA with Indiais ASEAN’s fourth witha dialogue partner,following Japan, Chinaand South Korea.

Trade between Indiaand ASEAN reachednearly 20 billion USdollars last year and isexpected to grow to 30billion dollars by 2010and create an ASEANEconomic Communityby 2015, the NDTV said.
