Vacating the Science Center: Remaining Moves

Following completion of the academic move program associated with REAB the Science Center is now vacant other than:

• Greenhouses

• CSM Machine Shop

• IT Data Center

• 2 Engineering research labs

Currently developing plans to control access to the Science Center. The catwalk will be isolated to continue to provide level access across the Campus

Vacating the Science Center:Infrastructure Hub, Data Center, and IT Staff Move• The University’s data center, currently located in the Science Center,

serves as a hub for the University’s centralized IT infrastructure hardware (Switches, Firewalls, APC units) and servers for a variety of end-users including IT, researchers/faculty, and departments

• The data center relocation is an enabling project for SDQD.

• Construction work will be completed in Spring 2020 and the data canter is scheduled to move during Spring Break 2020

• Current data center functions are to be split between a new on-campus location for IT infrastructure hardware and the co-location of servers to the main UMass data center in Shrewsbury

• The new on-campus location for IT infrastructure (IHUB) will be on the Upper Level of Quinn in current telecommunications space

• 26 IT staff have moved to Service and Supply and Healey Library Lower Level

Vacating the Science Center:CSM Machine Shop

• The College of Science and Mathematics machine shop, currently located in the Science Center, supports teaching and research by fabricating and repairing metal objects used in the lab or in the field

• The machine shop relocation is an enabling project for SDQD. It is scheduled to move in June 2020.

• The new location for the machine shop will be in the Service & Supply Building and will require relocating Facilities department MEP shops and Project Management

• Planning and design for the new machine shop is being performed by NBBJ, the designer for the SDQD project and construction work will be performed by Consigli, the REAB Construction Manager

• The Biology Department’s greenhouses are currently located on the Science Center’s roof

• Temporary greenhouses will be constructed to the rear of the Healey Library along UDrive South

• Anticipated moving the greenhouses in late March

Athletics and Pool Demolition

• Relocation of the Athletics’ training room, offices and storage in some areas of the Clark building is an enabling project for demolition of the swimming pool and construction of the new quad.

• Currently exploring relocation of these functions within the Clark building.

• Anticipated that light construction would take place in May and the move of staff and equipment would take place in June 2020

• Planning and design for is being performed by NBBJ, the designer for the SDQD project and construction work will be performed by Gilbane, the SDQD construction manager.

• Bayside building demolished in 2016

• Bayside site remains campus parking for near team. Additional parking is included in the SDQD project.

• Agreement to lease with Accordia Development has been signed and Accordia has completed its due diligence

• Weekend design charrettes held with community in October and November 2019

• Campus community open forum held in November 2019

Bayside Development

• Accordia is filing plans with Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA) later this month. Plans will include Bayside site and the Santander site, which Accordia also owns.

• Public process for planning and design to take place over next couple of years.

• Development anticipated to include a mix of academic and life science space, residential, retail and commercial uses on the site. Built-out Bayside could mimic Kendall Square.

• $25M infrastructure contribution is part of the deal. Accordia has indicated that some of this funding will be used for improvements to Mount Vernon Street.

• Proceeds to be used on qualified capital investments. Approval process for qualified capital investments being put in place with UMBA and the Board of Trustees.
