Christiansborg castle in Co-penhagen, which houses the Danish parliament, was re-

built 1907-1918 after its second fire in 1884. The 100 year old building is undergoing substantial renovation of its roof. Remaining is only the ren-ovation of the copper and concrete of the 100 m high tower, which will take approximately 3 years.

The scaffolding and access con-tract on the job is held by Dansk Stillads Service A/S. 15 km of steel scaffolding pipe envelope the build-ing which can be seen from all over Copenhagen City.

Access to the building site is via a 90 m high Scanclimber SC2032F hoist, with 24 landings. This hoist was delivered and erected by VMC Pitzn-er A/S, who also provided technical supervision on the scaffolding.

Underneath the ground around the tower is a museum, which hous-es ruins of earlier castles in the same place. Because of this, the hoist is placed on a system of steel beams which direct the weight of the hoist on to the pillars which carry the roof of the museum.

SC2032F at the heart of Denmark's Parliament house renovation

-Søren Thomsen, VMC Pitzner AS

Scanclimber SC2032F reaches the

Eiffel tower

In spring 2008 Scanclimber’s part-ner Sky Accès in Paris was given the order for the delivery of a build-

ing hoist type SC2032F for the trans-port of both passengers and materi-al which should be erected at one of France’s most famous monuments: the Eiffel Tower.

The SC2032 is needed for transpor-tation of staff and material for the refur-bishment of the restaurant on the first level of the Eiffel Tower being at a height of 62 m. This hoist is used independent-ly from the permanently installed hoist on the Eiffel Tower for transportation of the public.

The unique challenge for this project was to secure the 2 tonne capac-ity hoist at one anchoring point alone, 61 m above the ground, something nev-er attempted before.

Working closely with Scanclimb-er engineers a solution was developed utilising 3 mast stacks secured togeth-er in the form of a triangle and capable

of providing sufficient stability. The de-sign had to consider storm winds of 200 km/h as well as the loadings to be en-countered during erection and disman-tling. In order to meet all of these condi-tions a key element was a specially fab-ricated foundation frame which was de-veloped, designed and produced. This frame, to which all three mast stacks are attached, is integrated into the 25 m2 foundation weighing nearly 50 tonnes. This serves as a counterweight during the erection cycle and later provides load distribution for the completed hoist during the construction phase.

The Scanclimber SC2032F hoist with its load capacity of 2 tonnes and large cage dimension of 3,2 m x 1,5 m provides the sole method of verti-cal transportation throughout the 5 month refurbishment period of this fa-mous landmark on the Parisian skyline.

T he first Scanclimber SC2032 hoist in Aus-tralia was installed

at Melbourne Docklands Waterfront Development project. During the first week of December 2007 Scan-Rent Australia Pty Ltd (the new distributor of Scanclimbers in Victoria and South-Australia) in partner-ship with local rigging com-pany Rigtech Australia Pty Ltd erected the machine on behalf of Hansen Yuncken,

the main contractor on this job site.

Melbourne Docklands is a unique waterfront devel-opment in the heart city of Melbourne, covering 200 hectares of land and wa-ter, located along the spec-tacular Victoria Harbour and three kilometers of Yar-ra River frontage. It offers a dynamic blend of residen-tial, commercial, retail and leisure components. For this project the SC2032 hoist is

transporting both personnel and materials up on a seven story car park complex.

As well as the Dock-lands project Scan-Rent Aus-tralia Pty Ltd has also rented two SC2032 units for North-Bank Place East & West Tow-ers (11 & 16 stories respec-tively) in Melbourne. The main contractor on these job sites is L.U. Simon Build-ers. Additionally several new Scanclimber SC1432 passen-ger hoists are on the way to

Australia to support a rapid-ly growing construction ac-tivity.

Other distributors of Scanclimber Mast Climbing Work Platforms in Austral-ia include HiReach Rentals Australia Pty Ltd in Queens-land and MachForce Pty Ltd in Western Australia & North-ern Territories. Janne Haapalainen, Scan-Rent Australia Pty Ltd

SC1432 twin preferred choice for Nokia House

in Finland

The first SC1432 personnel and material hoist in Finland as twin cage unit was used for

the renovation of Nokia House, the head office of Nokia Corporation, lo-cated by the Gulf of Finland in Espoo.

Each office was fully remodelled at high speed with two floors being worked on simultaneously. As a result two independent hoist cages were re-quired. The hoist cabins were painted the same colour as the building at the customer's request so that they blend-ed in with the facade during construc-tion.

German contractor Wiemer & Trachte were awarded the contract to erect the two

cooling towers for the new blocks F and G at the Neurath power plant in Germany and therefore needed a suit-able hoist for the transport of both ma-terial and passengers from the ground up to the respective landing location throughout the slip form construction phase.

Special cooling tower hoist to 170 m

SCANCLIMBER SC2032F material and passenger hoist in use at Neurath power plant, Germany

The first cooling tower has a low-er diameter of 108 m with an upper diameter of 69 m. The outer surface has a concave profile whose gradient changes dramatically. Since the slid-ing formwork used for the concrete pour changed height continuously, a key requirement was that the hoist would adapt to the constantly chang-ing inclination.

Scanclimber Oy’s office from Limburg eventually solved the prob-lem together with their client by de-veloping an adaptation of the Scan-climber SC2032F (a hoist with 2.000 kg load capacity, a cage length of 3,20 m and a cage width of 1,5 m) to meeting these very special require-ments.

In order to adjust to the con-cave profile of the structure, distance sleeves - precision manufactured to match the required shape of the struc-ture - were installed between the 1,5 m long mast sections and the anchor pitch of the hoist was reduced to a dis-tance of only 12 m instead of normal 21 m as a result of the considerable inclination encountered. For the up-per anchor a shorter pitch was utilised in order to meet the requirement for a large freestanding mast above the last anchor. This demand of a long free slide way of the formwork with-out unnecessary disruption of an an-chor was achieved with a freestand-ing mast height of 15 m, even on a 16° inclination.

- Roland Zengerling, Scanclimber Oy Ltd. Deutschland

Additionally the power supply cable had to be specially installed. A cable trolley was placed underneath the hoist cage so that the ground sta-tion was slightly elevated to accom-modate this. Due to the changing in-clination throughout the entire lift ca-ble guides disruptions may have oc-curred. To overcome this anticipat-ed problem the cable guides were manufactured with special rollers so that the cable tension was mini-mised.

Additional optional equipment installed on Wiemer & Trachte’s Scan-climber SC2032F are a frequency con-verter which considerably reduc-es the starting current and there-by provides soft start and stop for a comfortable ride in the hoist cage. Furthermore, an automatic grease pump for the rack lubrication was pro-vided.

SCANCLIMBER SC hoists

Standard equipment provided in the SCAN-CLIMBER SC series hoists include overload protection, error code displays and ‘clear thru’ construction to provide easy loading of materials on pallets. SCANCLIMBER SC series hoists range in capacity from 800 to 2000 kg and with cage lengths from 2,4 to 3,7 m long. Ultimate heights with standard mast to 300 m. Single or twin cage versions can be con-figured from standard components.

SCANCLIMBER® Construction Hoists

The building business activity in Russia’s cap-ital has been remorselessly increasing over recent years. The highest building projects

being erected at the moment are in the Moscow City area.

There, on a surface of ca. 3 million of square metres various sky scrapers, con-cert halls, hotels etc. are emerging. The Moscow City business quarter presently comprises 15 sky scrapers.

One of the biggest sky scrapers is coming to completion at the moment. This is a 250 m high office building erect-ed by the Turkish company ENKA.

One of the most important machines on site is the building hoist which must provide passenger transport for the entire 250 m high building. Due to the consid-erable number of persons which must be transported due to various trade groups in such a building, particularly during peak hours like start of work and break times, and so a standard hoist could not be used.

In cooperation with the German Scanclimber branch a SC2032 passen-ger and material transport hoist was proposed according to the requirements of the customer. First it was agreed that on such a high 70 storey building the most economic way to avoid hoist congestion due to the demands of various users was to equip it with a lift attendant. Accord-ingly, lift cages were installed in order to be able to flexibly react to the require-ments of the job site and the lift attendants would be able to stop at landings requested as the work cycle progressed.

The hoist plant was designed as a double

SC2032 hoist 250 m high above Moscow SCANCLIMBER SC2032 double cage hoist on the construction of a 250 high tower on the Moscow City Complex in Russia

cage plant in order to transport the high passenger volume in the best possible way.

On this installation two cages run on one mast,

one on the left and one on the right hand side. This saved both investment and assembly costs with each lift cage able to carry 24 passengers at the same time.

- Roland Zengerling, Scanclimber Oy Ltd. Deutschland

In order to avoid additional investment costs in the landings, both lift cages were set in such a way that one lift stops at the even storey numbers and the other at the odd storey num-bers only. By this only half of the landings were necessary.

To guarantee an ap-propriate speed of the hoist plant, the Scanclimber fre-quency controlled drives were used which run the cages with a lifting speed of 54 m/min. This choice was made due to two considerations: one hand a high lifting speed on such a high building is needed, on the other hand operating with lifting attendants it is neces-sary to have a fast and smooth reaction capability to meet the various demands of all the sto-reys.

At the end of October 2005 Scanclimber, branch Germany was given the order for the delivery of the plant, provided that delivery of the complete hoist plant with ap-proximately 100 m of mast and accessory would take place in the second week of January 2006.

This tight delivery schedule was achieved and with a special bonus to Moscow in January: one of the cages was painted red, the other one in yellow which are the colours of the football club Fenerbah-ce Istanbul who has a lots of fans in Turkey.

Additionally the anchoring of such a high hoist requires some detailed solutions. First the hoist was designed to be delivered in order to have as few anchoring in the façade as possible. For this pur-pose the hoist was equipped with special anchor-ing which enabled a vertical anchoring distance

of 21 m installation of the mounting plates on-to the building was agreed upon with the steel

construction in order to place the anchoring in an area where subsequent mounting of the façade el-ements would be affected as little as possible. A location was found in which only a narrow area of about 20 m height and about 2,50 m width was left open. The rest of the façade could then be com-pletely finished in one.

The building of the Federal Ministry of Educa-tion was completely renovated both inside and outside within a period of 18 months. GSB Scaf-

folding Company was entrusted with the engineer-ing and provision of the access equipment required on the project. For this purpose 25.000 square metres of scaffolding were erected, partially with internal rail-ing and control panels. After that the whole structure was sealed up.

To provide the required access to the structure four Scanclimber units were provided, three transport platforms and a passenger hoist of 2 tonnes capacity.

GSB Scaffolding installed Scanclimber’s MTP 2000 transport platforms for the transport of especially bulky goods and a SC2032 con-struction hoist with the main focus on trans-porting persons. The SC2032 is able to lift up 20 persons to the top floor at a height of 55 metres in a little more than one minute.

To guarantee an optimal unloading of both the platforms and the hoists into the building GSB fitted special bridging railings and ramps into the scaffold so that even big and bulky goods can be transported through the scaffold.

SC2032F with side door • Job site: Danmarks Nationalbank, Copenhagen

• Supplier: VMC Pitzner A/S

The renovation of the roof at Danmarks Nationalbank placed ultimate requirements to performance and safety. One of the demands was a

hoist capable of lifting 2 tonnes and equipped with a door/exit at the long side of the cage. As a standard, hoists are only equipped with doors at the long side for the purpose of loading material onto the hoist at floor level. A close co-operation between VMC Pitzner A/S and Scanclimber made it possible - in short time – to meet the extreme load and access requirements. Scanclimber quickly produced and mounted customized doors to the SC2032F, and the hoist was ready to be approved and delivered to Dansk Stillads Service A/S, that holds the covering and access contract in connection with the roof renovation.

Due to severe access control to the bank, the hoist was furthermore equipped with an access control system that only allows cleared staff to access the hoist and con-sequently the building.

One of the first of the new Scanclimber SC1432 passenger hoist series have been installed on a new development in

the heart of the city of Emmen, Netherlands. The project is a multi function centre, a combination of a residential home for the elderly, together with a foster home.

- Roland Zengerling, Scanclimber Oy Ltd. Deutschland

The main contractor on this jobsite is Netherlands’ Jorritsma Bouw B.V.. They use the hoist to transport men and materials for both struc-tural work and for finishing trades.

For this application people for all construction phases and also for the materials required have to be transported, starting with bricks and structur-

al components through to in-ternal wall partitioning. In one respect they required a trans-port load capacity of 1400 kg for heavy components and people and additionally they also needed a cage at least 3 m long. The new Scanclimber SC1432 met the demand per-fectly.

Owner of this hoist is N.I.B.M. Kraan - en Lifttech-niek B.V. from Geleen, Neth-erlands. N.I.B.M. is one of the biggest rental specialists in the Benelux market for cranes and hoists, and is well known for their extensive experience in this business.
