1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This document serves to provide an outline of what Two Roads Consultancy can offer the
Agricultural sector.
The proposed solutions, models and tool-‐sets are complemented by our assembly of multi-‐
disciplinary and specialised personnel, together with our in-‐depth and relevant experience in both
the private and public sector spheres.
Governments world-‐wide are moving towards an economy that focuses on the production and
harnessing of knowledge. South Africa is essentially an agrarian country and agriculture has been a
major driving force behind the growth of the economy. The most striking feature of the agricultural
sector is its capability to provide employment, livelihood and food to the millions of unemployed.
Despite its indispensable contribution to the economy, the agriculture sector has been relatively
neglected where most of the reforms and funds went in favour of the non-‐ agriculture sector e.g
telecoms, mining, etc.
There has been much debate about land reform in the agricultural sector. With the passage of time
what is becoming abundantly clear is that the transfer of skills is crucial to the long-‐term
sustainability of land reform beneficiaries. On the issue of land reform and rural development, we
acknowledge that many challenges exist. Many problems beset agricultural projects in all provinces
including the lack of access to adequate information, knowledge and support services and they are
in desperate need of assistance. We can assist not only in implementing business management and
performance processes but also in training emerging farmers in the application of best farming
practices.
Emerging farmers face many challenges and often lack knowledge of agricultural practices, product
standards and the markets for products. They often do not pool resources and have poor access to
and knowledge of, markets. We identified that major challenges are bringing the producer and the
market together and educating the producer to understand the market for his/her products. To
leverage any advantage, an understanding of the future trends of markets, is essential for the
timeous provision and allocation of resources.
It is crucial that all levels of government redirect their developmental efforts in a way that takes
cognisance of these developments. Opportunities need to be created for all stakeholders to function
effectively and efficiently and a significant shift in thinking is required. Given the pace of change and
the uncertainty of the global economy, the challenge is to make enough sense of patterns,
possibilities and opportunities to implement solutions that will lead to sustainable development.
Our approach consists of components that bring together our best economic and agricultural
development, legal, risk management, human capital development, change enablement and
financial competencies. Members of our team have assisted numerous organisations with
Agricultural Audits, Development and Training, Provincial Growth and Development Strategies,
Feasibility Studies, PPP’s, Local Economic Development Strategies, Spatial Development Initiatives
and organisational models and strategies.
Vital to our approach is the consideration of various external environments and dimensions which
would impact on the success of investing in downstream opportunities. These dimensions are
summarised in Figure 1 below:
Two Roads is ideally placed to assist with all of the above and more. Our experience with local and international agricultural markets, farming best practices, training and mentoring along with our current agricultural initiatives in the Western Cape, Kwazulu-‐Natal, Eastern Cape, Limpopo, Free State and North West provinces puts us in the ideal position to support agricultural initiatives with practical advice and innovative solutions thus ensuring their success.
We draw upon our experiences to provide the best answers to the realities presented by agricultural
challenges.

Soils Alive is a specialist consulting business in Bio-‐logical farming practices whose main objective is sustainable agriculture i.e. to improve the L.I.S.A. The database of specialists to whom they have access and who assist with planning and technical budgets come from Nutri-‐Tech Solutions, the biggest Bio–farm company in Australia, Biotechnica, the leading biological operation in the UK, and Brookside Laboratories in the USA.
1.1.2 Utilisation of locally developed Agricultural Activity-based Budgets and Best Practices
Based upon our networks and involvement with agricultural bodies and training institutions we will use cutting edge thinking and planning templates to ensure successful and profitable outcomes for all crops planted. All inputs will be benchmarked against industry best practices to ensure optimal yields and good farming practice.
1.1.3 Comprehensive community participant training
In addition to our hands-‐on mentoring and training of project participants we have partnered with Fairtrade to provide their comprehensive agricultural training programme to emerging farmers.
