This week was both National Apprenticeship and National Careers Week. As we place great importance on our students developing employment skills and learning from external business partners, we marked the occasion by putting together a daily programme of encounters: Meet the Apprentice. This meant that from Monday to Friday, we benefited from the experience of 15 current apprentices, from 6 different local businesses, all of whom were both engaging, enthusiastic and highly informative. What is more, as we had such a generous response to our request for apprenticeship support, Wilmslow High

will be scheduling further apprenticeship presentations before the end of the summer term, as a week was not long enough to accommodate all who volunteered!

Monday, 5th March: Bott + Co.Harriet and Sara represented the legal sector, speaking confidently about their chosen pathway and detailing the pathways ahead of them. As we have already had a visit from Bott + Co., who gave a presentation as part of the Aspire High encounters, it was lovely to see some of the same students in the audience again, this time to learn directly from the apprentices. This shows a level of passion and determination, which will undoubtedly help them to achieve their goals.

Tuesday, 6th March: BentleyDom, Catherine, Corey and Fin, representing mechanics and mechatronics (car electronics) talked about their initial surprise at just how ‘hands-on’ their roles were right from the onset. They brought several props, including a large turbo for an engine and an expensive looking, wood-veneer tray table, the type you could only find in a really fancy car! The combination of enthusiastic delivery and engaging resources led to a flurry of questions from the audience.

Wednesday, 7th March: Chess ICT & AstraZenecaIn a mid-week pinnacle, students benefitted from a double visit. Joe, Ryan, Dan and Henry, talked about their web-development apprenticeship at Chess ICT. They highlighted how well supported they were by the award winning employer, as well as just how much they were learning, directly from experienced professionals.

Whilst Jordan and Megan introduced the details of their IT degree apprenticeships at AstraZeneca. Explaining the benefits and the challenges of completing a degree, at the same time as completing their day jobs. However, like the apprentices at Chess, they were quick to point out to our students that the benefits outweigh the negatives, and the support of an excellent employer make this endeavour possible.

Thursday, 8th March: ProsealFelix and Jess, introduced their roles, maintain machinery at Proseal. As a former student, Jess talked passionately about what led her to choosing an apprenticeship and just how much she has benefitted and developed within this role. Students learned about how to access a similar opportunity and the potential for development and even foreign travel during the apprenticeship.

Wilmslow High would like to thank all of the apprentices and businesses who have contributed towards making this event so sucessful and inspiration for our students.

NEWS

GCSE Practical examYear 11 completed their GCSE Food, Preparation and Nutrition practical exam with the outcomes beyond fantastic.

The students have been working hard over the last few weeks planning 3 dishes which not only had to be made in 3 hours but needed to showcase high level skills. They did a wonderful job, so organised and well thought out. Big thanks to their parents/carers for their support and encouragement with plenty of practice at home. We are very proud of all of their efforts.

Spanish ExchangeDuring February half term 20 Spanish students from Year 11 and Year 13 travelled to Coin in Malaga to partake in the Spanish Exchange. This is the 3rd year that this exchange has taken place with our partner school “Colegio de Lourdes”.

All students lived with their exchange partner and families and therefore were completely immersed into the Spanish way of life.

Highlights of the visit included a day trip to Seville, a trip to Malaga where we visited and learned about the history of the Alcazaba and a formal reception from the mayor of Coin along with a visit from the TV crew http://canalcoin.com/visita-alumnos-ingleses. Needless to say all the students benefited greatly from the visit as did their knowledge of the Spanish language and culture.

Thank you Marshalls! Thanks to Tim Marshall and his team from Marshalls Land Services for restoring the bridge into the wooded area so that it can now be used by students during lessons.

Here is a picture of some of our students with Mrs Goodwin cutting the ribbon (...string) to officially reopen the bridge.

Tims team have also started work ont he new Tesco funded sensory garden; photos to follow in a future issue.

Russia visitMoscow is very different to any city we had visited before. Above the fog and icy mist towered grey buildings; a symbolism to the era of Stalin's 'Gigantimania' For me, it was the rich history of the Kremlin, intricate beauty of St Basil's Cathedral, and an impressive sense of national patriotism that made Moscow such an interesting experience.

A highlight of the first leg of the trip was a short visit to Lenin's Mausoleum in Red Square, where we were ushered round a gloomy tomb, with the ominous eyes of the Russian guards on our backs. Visiting the Gulag museum brought the hard truths of Stalin's policies and served as a reminder of the huge loss of life during the socialist regime. Closing off our trip with a walk around Moscow at night, passing the Duma and illuminated streets, we were ready to board the overnight train to St Petersburg. The first glimpses of St Petersburg presented a polar opposite to Moscow. The opulence was unbelievable, with buildings decorated in ornate statues, colours, structures and tiling. We began to develop an even greater understanding of the power and wealth that this city held during the Tsarist reign. We travelled to the town of Pushkin, the town home to Catherine’s Palace: the former

summer house of the Tsars. This was the moment when the Russia revolution made sense. The wealth that the Tsars had was evident in every object and room of the palace; the amber room, the gold chandeliers, decoration and plating, the vast ballrooms, the paintings, the grounds.

The next day we went to the Peter and Paul fortress where we saw the prison for political prisoners during the Tsarist rule, Lenin’s cell, the church where the Tsars are buried. After this, we travelled back into the centre of St Petersburg to see the Siege of Leningrad Museum and the Church of the Saviour of the Spilled Blood. The museum highlighted the horrendous conditions endured by the population of St Petersburg during the Nazi occupation during WWII.

On our final day in St Petersburg we travelled to the Winter Palace, now the Hermitage, the winter residence of the Russian Tsars. Again, the opulence was impossible to comprehend. The vastness of the Palace was also unbelievable. Churchill once said, “Russia is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma”. He was right. Written by Emily Hamilton and Isabella Williams.

Fine and Applied Art Conference – Liverpool Hope UniversityOn Tuesday 6th March Mrs Hayward and Mr Wilkinson took Year 12 Art and Design A-level students to Liverpool Hope University to take part in a bespoke conference providing a unique opportunity for students to supplement their current A-Level project whilst developing knowledge on sector related issues, and what studying Art and Design at higher Education can enable.

Students attended an Art History lecture led by the Head of Creative Arts, a tour of the university grounds and gallery space, before opting for a colour and paint workshop delivered by one of the fine art

lecturers at the university.

The conference enabled students to explore and experience post 18 opportunities as well as a chance to speak informally to university students about life on campus, workload and the BA Art Foundation Course run at the University.

To close, the day students along with students from several other schools celebrated their achievements within the workshops with a small presentation.

We would like to thank the Wilmslow branch of The Arts Society for their financial assistance in supporting this educational visit.

NetballThe senior girls played local rivals Lymm on Wednesday afternoon, continuing their impressive run of form with a comprehensive 42-16 victory. This comes on the back of another strong performance against AESG where they once again ran out comfortable winners. The U12 girls A team were also in action, travelling to Macclesfield Academy where they posted 20 points in a fairly one sided affair.

RugbyThe rugby sevens season finally got underway after a number of junior tournaments had to be cancelled due to the weather. The seniors made their way over to St Ambrose for the Cheshire 7s, beating Cheadle Hulme and Bishop Heber before narrowly losing out to a strong Kings Macclesfield side 22-14.

The final group game was against the hosts St Ambrose where the boys managed 22-10 win but unfortunately ended up second in the group and went into the plate. Stockport Grammar were first up and were beaten comfortably before the lads met St Ambrose again in the final, where they ran out comfortable winners. Player of the tournament was Zak Bowden.

FootballAgain, not much football recently but the seniors were in action on Wednesday against Lymm in the Cheshire cup semi-final. The first half was tight with Wilmslow taking a slender 1-0 lead into the break courtesy of Ben Elliott but the second half saw our boys take control. Ben Elliott managed to grab himself another two goals, finishing with a hat-trick and booking his teams place in the cup final! Meanwhile, on Tuesday the U13 boys made the short trip over to Macclesfield Academy in the Macclesfield and district cup quarter final. The boys played some fantastic football in less than ideal conditions and ran out comfortable winners with Dan Walter also bagging a hat-trick. On to the semi-finals!
