Every year, to coincide with World Book Day, we take time to celebrate the benefits and pleasure of reading. Since 2015, we have been working hard to improve the reading habits of our students (and staff!) and this week has been a great celebration of all things literary.

Wednesday - ‘Battle of the Books’A look at our current Accelerated Reader date this year revealed that the two most popular books amongst our KS3 students are ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ by J. K. Rowling and ‘The Midnight Gang’ by David Walliams.

We invited students to take part in a Firefly vote to choose one of these books to hear read aloud in a very special performance from Miss Powley and Mr Vincent. The battle was won by Walliams and ‘The Midnight Gang’ was brought to life in a

brilliant performance from our senior leadership team!

Tuesday A visit from Fletcher Moss, winner of the Times/Chicken House Children’s Fiction Competition 2012, with his swashbuckling novel ‘The Poison Boy’.

We offered students the opportunity to work alongside this award-winning author in a special creative writing workshop. He works as an Assistant Headteacher at a school in Greater Manchester, having previously worked as a classroom teacher, shelf-stacker and van driver in France and Spain.

Students in Years 7 and 8 who have read at least 1 million words this year or scored 100% in an Accelerated Reader quiz were entered into a prize draw to work with Fletcher, whilst teachers nominated students in Year 9 and Year 10 to take part.

The workshops were a real hit and our guest author entertained students involved, providing them with some easy to follow formulae for writing successful short stories.

Thursday – A World Book Day exclusive! To help us celebrate World Book Day, we were delighted to welcome Stockport-based author of ‘The Einstein Code’, Jo Welch, to work with our Year 7 students.

Throughout the day, students heard more about life as an author and how to craft a truly gripping tale.

To make World Book Day truly special, Jo shared an exciting preview of her yet-to-be-released second novel, ‘The Darwin Code’ in a world exclusive! Being sure not to give away the ending of ‘The Einstein Code’, Jo gave us a tantalising glimpse at the continuing adventures of Ben, the books’ hero!

Jo will re-join us later in the year following the publication of ‘The Darwin Code’ and we look forward to her visit.

Friday – Insta-ReadLiterary photo booth fun in the LRC at lunchtime as students don props and costumes to get snappy as their favourite characters from fiction (see photos on front page)

Post 18 Choices EveningParents of Year 12 students received vital information about post-18 choices at the evening presentation on Wednesday 1st March.

Mrs Cook, Head of Post-16 Guidance, talked parents through the current post-18 landscape and outlined various options including university, employment and apprenticeships as well as updating parents with how the UCAS process operates at Wilmslow High School.

A highly informative presentation on student finance was given by Llinos Williams from the University of Bangor and Mrs Morgan provided help for parents who are navigating university open days for the first time. We are pleased that so many parents were able to attend. Power points will be available on the sixth form area of the school website.

NOTES

To our Year 9 parentsThank you for waiting so patiently for the results of the Year 9 assessments. As explained in the Year 9 Expectations Evening in the autumn term, we have introduced a new assessment and reporting system in order to understand our students’ performance more fully.

We have therefore taken extra time with our Year 9 assessment certificates as they are the first in the new system. The certificates will be sent out by the middle of next week and we are very much looking forward to your feedback on them. Year 9 reports will go out after the end of year assessments. Below is a link to the Expectations Evening information:http://www.wilmslowhigh.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Expectations-Evening-.pptx

Year 10 Work Experience 10th – 14th July 2017Students are now being allocated places for the week’s Work Experience and many have already brought in self placement forms too. It is really important that all those who wish to find their own placement bring in the completed form as soon as possible – this half term is ideal - as it takes a considerable amount of time to check all the details to make sure the placement is safe and suitable for Year 10 students. As I am sure you will agree, we cannot do these checks in the week or two before the students go out, even though students themselves seem to think this is possible! I should also like to remind you that we have requested a contribution of £10 from all students to help with the costs entailed. If household income makes this difficult, please do not hesitate to contact me in writing, by telephone 01625 444166 (direct line) or email ([email protected])
