11th Annual Modern Languages Debating Competition

Last week, 4 of our MFL A-Level students took part in the very prestigious annual Modern Languages North Schools Debating Competition.

Our students rose to the challenge of debating in German and Spanish, motions such as “Wars are unavoidable” and “Success is the key to happiness” against some of the region’s top schools.

They all performed superbly with the German team winning both of their debates in the group stages (vs Bolton School for Boys and Manchester High School for Girls) and progressing to the semi-finals.

There, they narrowly lost in the debates against the home school, Cheadle Hulme School. We could not have been more proud of our talented linguists and thank them for their immense commitment shown to MFL.

4) Students who are entitled to Access Arrangements for examinations should receive them for all these examinations, although in classroom exams these may have to be adapted in certain cases for reasons of practicality. Students can help their teachers in non-core subjects by checking with them that they understand what access arrangements they will need and agreeing how these can best be arranged in classroom based assessments.

During the morning, Year 11 mock interviews took place: 43 interviewers from a wide range of businesses conducted a total of 290 mock interviews for our Year 11 students. In brief, it's a big operation but it's a really worthwhile one.

There is always a buzz of excitement at this event. For many students, this is their first formal interview experience... and this is the purpose of the exercise: to break the ice!

Dressed in their smart interview attire, all students approached the interview with the correct attitude, impressing the interviewers across the board. Some volunteers have been helping with this event for over 6 years, and many remarked that, collectively, this was the most impressive set of students they had encountered across the interview desk.

This will take some bettering next year, Year 10 students!

Well done to all of the students involved. We hope that you have taken away valuable advice in order to gain future employment. Year 11, don't forget that now is the best time to amend your CV, whilst the learning is fresh. Also, many thanks to all of the volunteers who generously gave up their time in order to make

this event possible. It could not happen without your support. Watch the link below to see what our students thought:

In the afternoon, the Opportunities Fair took place. The Olympic Hall was transformed from an interview hub into a careers fair, offering a wide range of opportunities in the local area for students to access at either post-16 or post-18. FE colleges and businesses were pleased to have the opportunity to speak directly with students from Year 10 and 11, who were allowed to visit during one of their afternoon lessons. Many Sixth Form students attended too, some even managing to arrange work placements. A great result for them and a good example of how effective networking can be when seeking opportunities or employment. Some parents took the opportunity to visit the Opportunities Fair after school, many remarking how they would have liked something like this when they were at school.Thank you to all of the exhibitors who attended, several of whom had also been here for the morning to conduct mock interviews.

Finally, the Year 10 Work Experience presentation took place later in the evening. This followed nicely from the day's activities, encouraging students and parents to make the most of this opportunity, which an increasing number of schools are neglecting to offer during term time. However, this is not the Wilmslow Way! At WHS, we passionately believe that students should be leaving school as well-rounded, employable individuals who have been well supported in exploring and working towards their aspirations.

Wilmslow Youth Café OpeningOver the past 18 months, Wilmslow High School students have been working with Wilmslow Youth to redesign and refurbish the old scout hall underneath the URC Church on Chapel Lane into a modern youth Café. The work is now complete and looking fantastic! Tonight we are hosting a celebratory launch from 7-9pm, and all students (particularly Years 7-9) are very welcome to come. There are more details in the Community section of High Notes.

The café will be staffed by Wilmslow Youth volunteer adults and there is only room for 50 students at the opening night, so if you are dropping your children off, please make sure they are safely inside before leaving. After the launch evening, the café will initially be open every week during term at the following times:

50p Shop profits support House CharitiesThank you to all students who have purchased goods from the 50p Shop between the months of January to July. This week the four Heads of House and Student Mangers were presented with cheques to the value of £337 each to pass on to their respective House charities. In assemblies this week Heads of House talked to students about how important it is that our school community support those in need and less fortunate than ourselves. Throughout the year we raise money in a variety of ways but on a daily basis we must all work harder to think of and help others with acts of kindness.

The nominated House charities in 2016-2017 to benefit were:

CricketThe boys U15 indoor cricket team are through to the county finals... with a helping hand from three U13 players! Due to illness and injury, Charlie Hodge, Tom Wilson and Ben Hamilton-Ryan were drafted in at the final hour and were able to help Josh Fish (Capt.), Dan Vose and Tom Orr proceed to the next round. Results:Wilmslow beat Macclesfield Academy by 5 wicketsWilmslow beat Tytherington by 20 runsWilmslow beat Poynton by 12 runsWilmslow tied with All Hallows', but lost due to losing 1 more wicket. HighlightsDan Vose - Dan smashed around 60-odd runs across the 4 games, which was a great effort considering he scored a duck in one game!

Tom Wilson - retired off three balls, hitting Poynton's county bowler over his head for consecutive sixes showing technical class. He also chipped in with 4 wickets from behind the stumps throughout the tournament.Ben Hamilton-Ryan - Ben's bowling was unplayable at times: blue stumps flying everywhere, most batsmen unable to get more than 3 runs off his overs.

NetballOn Saturday the Senior, U14 and U16 girls played in the first round of the national competition. The Seniors managed to beat Kings Macc (17-16), Kings Chester (11-5) and The Grange (28-11) being crowned as Cheshire champions and progressing to the regional round in January. The U14 girls played really well, winning two games against Queens Chester and Helsby and losing two games against Bridgewater and The Grange. They made it through to the next round where they drew with Fallibroome 7-7 and placed 5th overall.

The U16 girls also played fantastically well, winning one game against Queens 5-2 and losing against Helsby, Kings Macc and Upton. They played Kings Chester in the play off and drew 5-5 meaning they also placed 5th overall.

FootballThe U13 and U15 boys were in ESFA cup action this week against the Blue Coat school, Oldham and Barlow RC high school respectively. Unfortunately, the conditions did not suit the U13s who like to knock the ball around and build from the back. They came up against a big, physical side and couldn’t get a foothold in the game, losing out 4-0.The U15s negotiated a tricky encounter, scoring five goals and conceding three against a game, physical team, to progress through to round 5.Goal scorers: Gabriel Thorpe x2, Kian Parsa,

Gabriel Araujo, Spencer BellMOM: Kian Parsa/Matt French The 1st XI were also in action, playing away at Cheadle Hulme high school in the North West ESFA League.Jack Moran put in a man of the match performance and Ben Elliot chipped in with a brace in a thrilling 5-5 encounter that provided plenty of entertainment. Our boys were 3-0 down after 20 minutes, levelling the score twice and going ahead with five minutes to play only to concede an equaliser in the last minute from a set piece!

Supp our Toy AppeaWe have partnered with the fantastic team at Royal

Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity to launch our very own Christmas Toy Appeal.

As well as collecting toys (new and unwrapped please), we are also accepting cash donations for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity’s One Big Wish Appeal. This year the Appeal is raising money to provide specialist 3D Pain Distraction Units. The units can be used by children of all ages and abilities, no matter what their condition, to help ease their fears and take their minds off some of the painful procedures and distressing

treatments they face whilst they are in hospital with us.

Each year the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital cares for 260,000 children. Toys donated to our Appeal will be shared amongst the children at Christmas, special times of the year,

and to celebrate birthdays or reward bravery.

Taking part is easy. Simply pop into any one of our 18 offices where you will find toy collection boxes or

donate via our JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/gascoignehalman

We look forward to seeing you!
