As we reach the end of another term full of broad ranging and very successful activity, in and outside of the classroom, I wanted to take this opportunity to say how very proud I am to be in a position to lead such a thriving, ambitious and happy learning community; a community which is guided by values, strives to serve and is dedicated to learning. I hope that you are equally proud of the contribution your children make to the school’s successes and of the contribution the school makes to your children’s progress and ‘whole’ development.

In the next few years, we will be faced by a number of interesting developments and indeed decisions, but they are opportunities that I as headteacher am looking forward to embracing, as Wilmslow High School continues along its journey to achieve excellence in all that we do. Part of the process of school improvement involves reflecting on feedback we receive from all stakeholders about areas that we can further develop. In the new term, Mr Vincent will contact you with a link to an online parent/carer and student survey. Please help us by spending 5 minutes to complete the survey.

Of course, success is the product of hard work and practice, so as we begin the Easter break, students in Years 10 to 13 in particular, should be focusing on effectively preparing for internal and external examinations. We will be emailing out a ‘Do more, be more’ High Notes examination support special issue at the end of April, that will hopefully provide students and parents/carers with all the information, advice and guidance that you need.

As well as preparing for examinations, students can look forward to what is always a very busy term in relation to wider curriculum opportunities, such as, ‘Whole Education Fortnight’, work experience placements, sports and performing arts events as well as numerous enriching educational visits. It is important that students really make the most of the activities that are on offer.

School reopens for the summer term on Monday 11th April. I look forward to seeing students return on that day, on time, appropriately dressed, fully equipped and eager to learn and to contribute.

Best wishes for an enjoyable Easter break.

Year 11 art visit to LiverpoolYear 11 art and design students enjoyed a day in Liverpool gathering essential primary and secondary information for their forthcoming controlled test.

Students explored the rich and cultural environment of the World Museum, seeking out opportunities to photograph and sketch from a variety of objects, artefacts and creatures.

In the Walker Gallery students engaged with a broad selection of traditional and contemporary art to inform the critical and contextual element of their examination.

The exhibition of work by the pre-Raphaelite artists showcased more than 120 paintings of great significance and beauty. An opportunity for the art and design students to immerse themselves in a world where art and literature come together.

We had the pleasure of viewing works by Rossetti, Millais and Holman Hunt; an exhibition not to be missed.

‘The Runaways’On Saturday 23rd April our students will be performing their latest devised piece ‘The Runaways’ for visitors of Quarry Bank Mill.

The performance has been devised by students who are members of the drama group ‘The Project’ who have spent recent weeks developing and creating the characters and story, both inspired by the exciting setting of The Worker’s Cottage.

Please come and support our students and enjoy a wonderful performance. Performance times: 11.00am, 12.00pm, 1.00pm. For more details please contact Miss Boden: [email protected]

The Magistrates’ Mock Trial competition saw teams arguing for and against Miss Smith’s innocence in Crewe Magistrates’ Court on Saturday 19th March. This is a national competition for Year 8 and 9 students, where around 400 teams nationally act out trials, and their performances are judged by real Magistrates. Our team won the local heat, and will now go through to the regional final on the 14th of May.

Our barristers, Mia Connor, Lauren Philips, Caitlin Ebbern and Kate Rishworth, deftly steered the witnesses from other teams into admitting that black was white.

Our witnesses, Caitlin Medcalf (taxi driver), Amelia Budd (who thought she saw it all in the dark from across the road), Lilia Dandache (the defendant,

an inebriated passenger) and Jessica Walters (a cleaner at the Fire Station), all stuck to their guns, dodging the barristers’ attempts to trick them into saying what they wanted them to say. Our Magistrates, Elise Coventry and Holly Ward, painstakingly analysed and evaluated the evidence, while our

legal advisor, Clara Edler, gave clear and comprehensive advice on the law. Our usher, Charlie Wood, was commended for being so commanding and bossy.

The Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire and the Lady Mayoress presented the prizes. We all received a medal and a scroll, and Lauren Philips won the award for best overall performance. We went home on the train, radiant with new-found confidence and heads held high. - Joseph Vale, Year 8

Everyone saw the taxi driver chase Charlie Smith outside the fire

station. But why did Miss Smith kick the taxi driver? Was she trying to escape abduction? Or was just

an accident, as the tipsy Miss Smith tried to steady herself? And why did the taxi driver take her to the

fire station in the first place? She’d asked to go to the train station!

Young Enterprise Wilmslow Business Group meetingOn Monday 3 students from Cogent Coaster (Wilmslow High School’s Young Enterprise team) attended the Wilmslow Business Group meeting at Club AZ in Macclesfield.

James Swarbrick, Hannah Steele and Jonathan Swift pitched our product; ‘My Lid’le Coaster’ on behalf of Cogent Coasters. The product was well received with many businesses immediately making a purchase for use in their office environment with a bulk order from friend of the school, Chafes Solicitors. We were also given contact numbers for several businesses in the Wilmslow area so we can arrange workplace visits and talk more about the benefits of our product.

Revolution Bar and the Coach and Four particularly appreciated the protection our product offers their patrons from the growing problem of spiked alcoholic drinks.

In last Thursday’s meeting, the Regional Sales Manager of Ferrero UK; Kieron Loynton visited the sales team to offer advice on sales and

to help them develop their sales technique. Sales Director Adam Leigh said “it was a brilliant opportunity for the sales team. Mr Loynton taught us an effective and efficient sales approach to selling the coasters. The team gained a lot from the two hour session learning that being too forward in a sales pitch can put a customer off regardless of the product. We learnt that engaging and networking with the potential customer is vital to the success of the pitch”. Perhaps this is why the team that attended the Wilmslow Business Group meeting were greeted with such enthusiasm!

With the competition closing on 21st April at Radbroke Hall, the rest of the team are busy preparing the company report, trade stand, sales pitches and the final presentation. Look out for them at the Year 7 Parents’ Evening on Thursday 14th April for your chance to own your own Cogent Coaster! Adam LeighSales DirectorCogent Coasters

Road 2 Rio!This week saw students and staff embark on a journey in aid of Sport Relief: a 5,800 mile journey from Wilmslow High School to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. In a collective effort, staff and students were encouraged to clock up as many miles as possible during the week. All pupils across KS3 and KS4 ran 800m each during PE lessons. This alone accumulated 2500 miles, giving us a great foundation to build upon. Pupils and staff also recorded their mileage on their commute to and from school, as well as other extracurricular activities. On Friday 18th March, a running track was set up around the large astro-turf, allowing students and staff the opportunity to get in a few final miles. Students of all abilities and

ages came out in their masses to support a great cause, joined by a number of high profile staff in their running gear! The final mileage has now been totalled up and the results are astonishing…

As a school, we have managed to accumulate a total of 11,719 miles!!! Not only has this smashed our original target or getting to Rio, but we also made it back across the Atlantic Ocean safely! The most important figure of the week however comes in the form of GBP sterling. As a school we have managed to raise

£1534.79 for Sport Relief. A big thank you to all involved – both staff and students – who made the week a big success!

Wilmslow’s Food and Drink WeekAs part of Wilmslow Food and Drink Week students from Wilmslow High School took part in a cake off competition.

Students from Years 7 to 9 presented their own interpretation of Food & Drink Week in cake form and their amazing entries were judged at Trukitchen on Saturday, 19th March.

The impressive creations were judged by Sarah Bridge of Wilmslow Cookery School and Charles Banford of Peter Herd who scored them on their appearance, make-up and taste.

‘Give 5 in Your Community’ - Volunteer FairOn Thursday 17th March 21 volunteer organisations came into school to speak to students about local volunteer opportunities.

Students from Year 11, 12 and 13 were offered the chance to apply to volunteer at the following organisations.

The students got so much out of the afternoon as did the visiting exhibitors. Sixth Form Student Manager, Miss Evetts, commented, “I am delighted with the amount of volunteering opportunities available to our students in the local area. It’s great to see our students talking to the organisations and signing themselves up to help out. The feedback from the exhibitors about the event and our students was very positive.”

We are hoping to run this type of event each year to ensure our students engage and give back to their local community.

NOTES

Wilmslow SwimathonInterested in entering a team of 6 or less to swim for charity? Since 1988, well over two thousand swimmers representing a cross section of local life have raised over £145,000 for many local and national charities, swimming in the Rotary Swimathon. Each team consists of six swimmers who swim on a relay basis. Your team will be allocated a lane in the pool and how you organise the team’s swim is left up to you. Some teams have their strongest swimmers swim several consecutive lengths to give their team mates a longer rest. Teams of less than six swimmers may enter but this means more swimming by its members.Interested? If so, click on these links for information and entry forms.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Year 11 study leaveAs you may be aware, Year 11 students are no longer granted formal study leave in line with new statutory guidance. However, a significant number of GCSE examinations will be taking

place before the half term break. For further details, and the full GCSE examination timetable, please see the school website www.wilmslowhigh.com

Students will therefore be expected to attend school until Thursday 26th May and will continue with normal timetabled lessons until this date. We are unable to grant permission for study leave before this time. After half term (week commencing 6th June) students can revise at

home and are only required to attend school to sit examinations or organised revision sessions.

Additional science mock examination 24th March 2016The examination will consist of 3 subject specific papers totalling 2 hours. Some students may have a mixed tier of entry (higher or foundation) for different science subjects, based on their performance in that science subject during the year.

We are using the marks from this mock examination as an indicator for the GCSE tier entry in the summer examinations and consequently as an approach to ensure that they achieved their best possible grade.

Year 10 Work Experience 4th–8th July Please ensure self-placement forms before the end of this term. There are still placements available and we will try to help students who have a specific request. The school has requested a £10 contribution towards the cost of work experience and, although many contributions have been received, there are still some outstanding.

f there are any problems please contact Mrs Stephens by letter, phone or email. [email protected] or 01625 444166 (direct line)

Student DashboardWe are currently looking at a number of ways of improving the way we share information with students and parents. We have currently developed a simple webpage that will allow students to see their current attendance, achievement and homework information. This new webpage can be accessed from the school website by clicking on the ‘Student Dashboard’ link.

After clicking on this link, students will then need to enter their school login and password, after which they will then see this screen:

Students can see an overview of their current ‘Wilmslow Way’ behaviour and achievements points as well as attendance data and current homework set. Clicking on links from the Student Dashboard page will then show more detail such as individual lesson attendance and homework details:

The system is currently being trialled and we are aware that it can be at little slow to log in. However, we would encourage you to have a look at this new facility with your son/daughter over the next few weeks with a particular focus to check what homework is being set.

Trampolining National FinalsFollowing their success at the North West finals in December and the North Zonal Finals in January, seventeen students across four teams from Wilmslow High School took part in the UK National Trampolining Finals in Wigan on Saturday.

Once again it was a fantastic occasion and the teams’ performances surpassed even coach Hilary Pemberton’s expectations with every student finishing the day as a National Champion.

In the team competitions there were wins for the U14 girls novice, U14 boys novice, U19 boys novice and U19 boys elite teams. In the individual competition Brendan Smith finished in 3rd position in the U19 boys elite category, Gracie Davies was 2nd in the U14 girls novice competition and an outstanding performance from Elise Bale (right)saw her crowned UK National Champion in the U19 girls novice category.

Head coach Hilary Pemberton was extremely proud of the students’ hardwork and determination throughout the year and extended her thanks to her team of assistant coaches, parents and PE staff who have helped make this a season to remember.

Girls footballCongratulations to our U16 Girls football team. Following wins against William Stanier, Weaverham and Neston earlier in the competition, the team faced Poynton High School in the final of the Cheshire Cup.

Having played some fantastic football throughout the season, the girls didn’t let their cup final nerves get the better of them and dominated the game from the first whistle to run out 7 – 1 winners.

Emily Maslen scored a hat-trick and a goal each from Olivia Dixon, Amy Colledge, Alice Hutton and Eloise Wienholt. Thanks go to Craig Maroney and WellnessWorx/Fizzeek Health and Fitness http://fizzeekhealthandfitness.co.uk/ for the sponsorship of the girls’ football teams this year.
