The Fraunhofer Institution for Marine Biotechnology
(EMB) provides products and services in various areas of
applied life sciences research. Starting from developing
new technologies, processes and instruments in the fields
of cell isolation and utilization, cellular test systems as well
as online analysis of living cells are established plus cell-
based medical and laboratory techniques are set up. EMB
scientists work also on biological water quality monitoring,
aquaculture technology, cellular technologies, homoiother-
mic and poikilothermic animal cell cultures.
Thus, the most compelling feature of the EMB is the bund-
ling of competencies from various research fields – plus the
support from an in-house tool shop. A central services lab
supports the creative, solution-orientated and enthusiastic
junior and senior researchers.
Fraunhofer EMB scientists have together with Fraunhofer
Institute for Biomedical Engineering established a cell bank
for wild and rare animals – the German Cell Bank for wildlife
‚Alfred Brehm‘ (CRYO-BREHM for short).
