Welcome to the Professional Science Master’s (PSM) Program at Rutgers University! Our Master of Business and Science (MBS) degree offers you outstanding opportunities to prepare for science-based careers in a wide range of industries. We have developed a unique community within a large public research institution that is equally committed to both academic rigor and professional relevance. Our programs offer curricula personalized to your career goals, hands-on learning opportunities, convenient evening schedules for required courses, and multiple course formats (in-person, on-line, and hybrid). You also have the opportunity to study with outstanding faculty, which include award-winning academics and accomplished business leaders.

The PSM program is unique among its competitors in that it offers a flexible, integrated, and personalized approach to science and business education. Students in the MBS degree pursue specially developed courses in Life Sciences, Computer and Information Sciences, and Engineering, that focus on building both the deeper learning and hands-on science and technical knowledge needed to succeed in business today. The business and communication courses that students take in the program are also designed to help you better integrate science and business acumen and apply those skills effectively in the job market. Workshops, lectures, and networking events featuring business leaders - what we like to call “The MBS Experience” - help students to further integrate their business and science education and gives students an edge in successfully transitioning into a challenging job after graduation. To date, over 96% of MBS graduates who were available to work after graduation found a job within six months.

What is a NetID?To obtain your NetID, go to:

https://netid.rutgers.edu/index.htm

All faculty, staff, and students are assigned a Rutgers unique identifier known as a NetID, comprised of initials and a unique number (e.g. jqs23). In order to access many of the electronic services available to you at Rutgers, you need to activate your Rutgers NetID. Your assigned NetID will appear on the activation screen. You will need a NetID to register for classes.

What does NetID and Services Activation do?

Sets your authentication passwordThis is the password you will use for most electronic services.

Allows you to setup your security questions and answersYou can choose to select three questions and answers that will help you reset your password. Please note this is only available for students not employed by Rutgers University.

Allows you to select servicesYou can choose services for which you are eligible, including ScarletApps (Google for Rutgers), or locally provided email and website services.

Establishes your Rutgers email addressThis is the email address to which Rutgers University will send official communications and notices.

Allows you to choose where you would like your official Rutgers email deliveredYou can choose to have your Rutgers email address forwarded to a different account, or you can choose to use a Rutgers provided email service.

How to Obtain a Rutgers ID CardThe RUconnection Card is the official photo identification card issued to faculty, staff, students, and guests on all Rutgers University campuses. This unified photo ID card serves as the primary form of identity verification throughout the university.

Based on your role within the Rutgers University community, the RUconnection Card may be used to access services including:• Checkout privileges at any of the Rutgers University libraries• Access to recreation centers and computer lab facilities• Entry to football games and other events• Access to purchased meal plans and debit account options• Access to assigned housing and other buildings• Identification for transactions with the university cashier and registrar• Attendance verification for classes and exams

Graduate students have access to Rutgers University libraries, computer labs, recreation centers, RU Express accounts, and meal plans via their RUconnection card.

First-Year Graduate Student RUconnection cards may be obtained: • One week prior to the start of classes • At any RUconnection card office (no appointment necessary) • With a valid government-issued form of photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport • At no charge for the first issue of this card • The card will be issued immediately

myRutgersThe myRutgers portal is a one-stop tool that provides you with access to important information at Rutgers. Using the customizable channels in myRutgers, you can read your email, check your grades, sign up for classes, search the Rutgers libraries, see a calendar of events at the university, and much more. How to Obtain a Special Permission Number (SPN)

Some courses require a Special Permission Number (SPN), to register.

All Special Permission Number requests for MBS courses (16:137:xxx) should be made by filling out this form: https://mbs.rutgers.edu/special-permission-number-request

Please include all the fields for the course i.e. Course Number, Course Name and Index Number.

Other Rutgers DepartmentsAll other special permission numbers must be requested from the respective department directly. For example: If you need a number from Chemistry, contact the Chemistry department administrator, if you need one for Electrical and Computer Engineering, contact that department.

Business School Courses (22:xxx:xxx)Students must fill out and submit the Rutgers Business School Special Permission form located on the MBS website along with an updated resume. Both documents are to be submitted to psminfo@docs.rutgers.edu for review. Once approved internally, the MBS office will send both documents to the Rutgers Business School for approval. If approved by the Business School, a SPN will be issued to the MBS office, which will then be issued to the student.

Accessing Course Material

CanvasCanvas is a tool used by professors and students for distance learning and for a majority of online MBS courses. Students can access their online materials for class as well as have threaded discussions, receiving grades, assignments, etc.

SakaiSakai is the Course Management System used on the Rutgers-New Brunswick campus. As a student, you will automatically be joined to course sites if the professor has chosen to use Sakai. Anyone with a Rutgers NetID can set up a Sakai project site, used to share information with both Rutgers and non-Rutgers colleagues.

ExternshipsThe Rutgers Master of Business and Science (MBS) degree program runs an Externship Exchange opportunity for students and companies where we match up MBS students to corporate sponsored small projects. All projects and teams are directed by the Externship Coordinator, Dr. Nelson.

The MBS Externship Exchange is a great way to get involved. Students can take the Externship Exchange for credit or just participate as “club”. Projects typically run between 6-12 weeks, and students usually work 8-10 hours per week on the Externship projects. Often projects are completed by a few teams of students in groups of 2-3. Since students work on real projects, they often sign confidentially agreements with the company or organization.
