The deposit is one. point of land tormed by a sharp bend in Salt River. The stratigraphic aequeneeon the pOintoonsists of .50 feet of Dripping Spring quartzite a"C the base, overlain by 7, i'eat of' J.~soal Limestone, which in turn .is overlain by 7~ feet of diabase. Devonian 14artin LiIn,estone rest,s uneonformabil.y on the diabase.

Numerous asbestos Mains oeeUl-a ina. zone from 25 to 30 feet below the diabase a.nd appear more or less o-pntinuously along the northern side of the point over a length of nea.l~ly 2,500 feet. Along this extent" t.he attitude of the lime$tohe is quite constant. the strike varying between N. 200 to 30(}g. and dipping from 20° to JOoSt.

Interviewed Rex Town, 450 E. Mesquite, Globe, at his millo He is now m1n1ng the Phillips mine for Mrs. Guy Phillips and milling the asbestos in his mill. The Guy Phillips estate has been settled and his wife has the mine. There are four men working at the mine and two in the mill. EGW WR 1-29-65

Rex Town, superintendent for Western Asbestos Mfg. Co., P.O. Box 11496, Phoenix, who are mining Phillips mine. ~Mr. Al Lamm is general manager and Do Hayes, Phoenix office manager. Other officers of company not known or revealed. FTJ WR 11-26-65

Visited Western Asbestos plant. Dan Hayes, office mgr., said mine and mill operating two shif ts per day. FTJ WR 1-2,8 -66

Interview with Rex Town - plant shut down temporarily - Western Asbestos is apparently out of the picture and according to Gerhardt, Freeman and McClure are financing operations. This includes the working of the Phillips dump. FTJ WR 3-31-67

At the time of the visit, there were only 10 men working instead of the customary kI 40 men. Mr. Phillips was in a discouraged mood and said that he was figuring on going out of business. He has apparently had dlif-ficul ties with the tax men and according to.rurnors his fiber is nearly all short at the present. It:should be pointed out that Hr. Phillips is a man given to moods and may well have been in a mood at the time of .visit. He has a long record of successful operation in t he asbestos business in this area and at the present group of mines. It should be further pointed out that the rumors in the asbestos business are very frequently in error and are very unreliable.

Phillips Mines has a well equiped group of dwellings' for hfs labor, a mill, ample mine equipment etc. and a market 'lFior his fiber, which he has continued to maintain, not hav~ng shipped any fiber· to the warehouse. program or the national stockpile.
