Each question from “Check your knowledge” is asked based on an MSHA environment. After
completing “Check your knowledge”, learners will be provided with a breakdown of their strengths
as well as opportunities for improvement. These areas are then linked to the appropriate sessions
within the CBT or Web Tools site that will provide the learners with the information they need to
improve their performance.

As a facilitator, your response is:
“Too bad, John. There is absolutely nothing I can do. It’s your responsibility. So, let’s get back to our training.”
“ I can see why you are upset, John. Whatever the problem is, we can work on it together. Allow me to explain: The operation of electric equipment that was not maintained and contained components …”
You are the facilitator for the MSHA training workshop. For your case study, you are using the mine rescue team’s recovery operations at the Scotia Mine, KY, of March, 1976. In the middle of this case study discussion, one participant (John Doe) gets upset and challenges you by saying:
“Investigators concluded that the explosion of March resulted from inadequate ventilation. The first explosion killed 15 miners. The second explosion occurred during the rescue operations and killed 11 rescuers including three Mine Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) inspectors. This is too much and too risky!”
