Principal’s News
Congratulations to Bridie O’Connor and Maddy Niven on being accepted into the NSW Public Schools State Choir to perform at the Opera House in September. This is an amazing achievement for both young ladies and we look forward to hearing of their success with this experience. Well done to the twenty students who successfully completed their White Card training last Friday under the guidance of Mr Steve Wilson. It is a real plus that our students have access to a registered trainer. Thank you to the parents who completed and returned the Curriculum Survey. Our school has always prided itself on the diversity of the curriculum we provide and the opportunities our students have and it is pleasing that many parents support us in this endeavour. The 2020 curriculum is yet to be finalised with subject selection scheduled for week six and anticipated staffing notified later in the term. This week will see the commencement of our Year 6 into 7 Transition program with a Parent Information session and morning tea on Tuesday morning and the first of the partner school visits scheduled for Thursday. It is anticipated that next year we will be welcoming around 60 Year 7 students from across 11 different schools. Next week our Year 12 students will begin their final major assessment of the year with the commencement of the 2019 Trail HSC. We wish the students all the best in their preparation for these exams. The formal examination period will finish on Tuesday 27th August with students expected to be back in class by period four on the same day. Congratulations to Andrew Street on being the successful recipient of the weekly Canteen Voucher. Neryle Smurthwaite Principal

Year 7 History As part of ‘Investigating the Ancient Past’, both Year 7 classes have been learning about how historians use artefacts & sources to form a hypothesis about a past event, building, person or civilisation. To help students understand how this is done they were asked to explore their own personal history. Each student brought a mystery box to school with 10 artefacts from their lives and an explanation of why they included each item.
Both classes swapped their mystery boxes and were asked to examine the contents and form a hypothesis of the owner of the box based on the clues therein. Students had a great time putting the clues together to identify the owner of each box with a high success rate. There were still a few surprises though!

Year 6 to 7 Transition Program We are pleased to introduce our Year 7 2020 Year Adviser, Miss Tamara Donovan, and inform you of the details of our Year 6-7 Transition Program for 2019. The planned activities will provide students and parents with the opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of a range of school procedures and experiences. Throughout this program, students will begin building knowledge of their new environment and develop positive relationships with Canowindra High School staff and students.
White Card Course
On Friday 9th August, 20 students from Years 9, 10 & 11 successfully completed the General Construction Induction Course, commonly known as the White Card. This course is a mandatory requirement for any construction work and is an important foundational step in each student’s individual careers journey.
Students were regaled with industry stories from their course presenter, Mr Wilson, and instructed in how to maintain the safety of themselves and others in the workplace. The course also required completion of several units of competency, which are becoming increasingly weighty documents, and the students did not disappoint by approaching all elements of the course and assessments enthusiastically.
The course is offered regularly according to need and is open to any student, aged 14 years or older, who are anticipating future work in the various construction industries. Students wishing to express their interest in undertaking a future course are invited to see Mr Conliffe in the Careers Adviser Office in order to discuss this and any other training opportunities.
