University of Wollongong—Discovery Day

Last Thursday and Friday, nineteen Year 12 students, along with Mr Conliffe and Mrs Balcombe, boarded the bus to make the annual journey to The University of Wollongong Discovery Day. This initiative gives students the opportunity to experience first-hand what a day at university is like. Although COVID restrictions meant that the trip ran a little differently, with less intermingling between schools, students were still able to sample much of what Wollongong and its University have on offer. Students attended lectures on public health, nursing, law, and a variety of other topics while also checking out the labs and equipment.

Congratulations to our Year 12 students on another very successful University of Wollongong excursion. This was a great opportunity for the students to gain insight into life at university. A big thank you to Mrs Balcombe and Mr Conliffe for supervising the trip. Last Thursday Brad Fittler and the Hogs for Homeless crew visited the school and spoke with all of our students as part of the NRL Hogs for Homeless program. The very important message they delivered was well received by students and staff alike. Thank you goes to Ms Davis for her organisation of this worthwhile event. This Tuesday afternoon we will be welcoming our Year 7 students and their parents to the annual Welcome Afternoon Tea. This is a great opportunity for parents to meet their child’s teacher and, since COVID prevented the Parent orientation session in term four, the first time for some parents to visit our great school. The afternoon is also the start of a busy week for Year 7 with their annual three day excursion to Wyangala Dam setting off on Wednesday. Here’s to a great time for all involved!

Student Mental Health Study – Future Proofing

This year Canowindra High School will be seeking students in Year 8 to participate in a groundbreaking study conducted by the Black Dog Institute. We know that 50% of all mental health problems emerge in adolescence, yet teenagers are unlikely to get help until these problems have an impact on school attendance, academic results and relationships. Even when these problems become obvious, many teens avoid seeking help due to cost, stigma and trouble finding the right services. By using app-based healthcare tools, we can put evidence-based mental health programs into the hands of all young people, whenever they need them and wherever they are. What does the study involve? Students in the study will complete online surveys about their mental health and wellbeing at school. There are two surveys in Year 8, and then one each year until Year 12. Students will also use apps to teach them skills to manage their wellbeing, and to teach us about the early signs of changing mental health. All students in the study will have their mental health screened and if they need support, we’ll link them in with the school counsellor. Further information on the study will be supplied to parents and Year 8 students in the coming weeks.

Year 12 area update

Our Year 12 area has been undergoing some upgrades over the last few weeks. Here’s some photographs of the progress that has been made.

Year 7 Afternoon Tea

Don’t forget that this Tuesday is the Year 7 afternoon tea, 4pm - 5.30pm at the school canteen. Take this opportunity to meet informally with your child’s teachers.

Year 7 Camp This week our Year 7s will head out on their first excursion as a year group. They will spend three days at Wyangala Dam, taking part in team building activities and bonding with their peers. Look out for next weeks newsletter that will include pic-tures and a run down of everything that they got up to. If you have any questions about their excursion please contact Mr Timothy Roberts at the school. Have fun Year 7!

NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM

Over the last few years Canowindra High School has had students studying senior Science courses have been selected to attend the National Youth Science Forum held in Canberra. Recent attendees have included Will Wright, Chanse McLean, Julia Wright and over this last Christmas break, Clare Hines and Claire Wright. The students have not only attended the forums but have then acted as leaders and mentors the following year. The experiences and the network of contacts they have gained have been invaluable. Over three weeks during the Christmas holidays, Canowindra High School students Claire Wright and Clare Hines had the incredible opportunity to participate in the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) 2021. NYSF was established in 1983 and has catered to over 12 000 alumni since. The program aims to educate students in Year 12 with a passion and interest in science about the numerous and varied careers the STEM fields offer. NYSF usually involves a two week residential experience at the Australian National University, however due to COVID-19, the organisers redesigned a majority of the program to be digitally based for the 2021 year 12 session. This allowed the program to feature a wider variety of specialists in the STEM fields, including two of Australia’s own Nobel Laureates, Professor Barry Marshall and Professor Brian Schmidt. Other opportunities included extracting strawberry DNA in your own kitchen, workshops with scientists and science communicators and social interactions with people who share interests. The program also offered a period of three day in-person visits to universities all over the country which included anything from getting your arm wrapped in plaster at ANU’s medical school in Canberra, to examining DNA from a ‘crime scene’ in one of their teaching labs, to learning about the agricultural degrees offered at Armidale. The girls would like to give their thanks to their biology teacher, Mrs McKenzie, for ensuring the program is offered to upcoming year 12 students at Canowindra High School, as well as to past NYSF attendee from Canowindra, Julia Wright for mentoring them through the process. The program was an amazing experience that will be incredibly beneficial in their future endeavours. Any Year 11 students who are interested in attending NYSF in 2022, are more than welcome and encouraged to make further inquiries on the NYSF website or ask questions directly to Claire and Clare about their experience.

Hogs for Homeless—NSWRL

On Thursday afternoon, Canowindra High School was fortunate enough to be included in the ‘NRL Hogs for Homeless’ tour. NRL greats Brad Fittler, Steve Menzies, Beau Scott, Luke Lewis and members of the Hogs for Homeless run, including Gus Worland from MMM radio, rode in on their Harley Davidsons, presented a talk and posed for some pictures. They delivered a motivational talk on setting goals, becoming the best you that you can be and overcoming challenges. It was a great opportunity for all of the students to listen to them talk and be involved in a great afternoon.
