George Making Waves as a Sharp-Shooting BulldogIn both contests last week, Paul George, a true freshman from Palmdale, Calif., recorded game-highs in scoring with 23 points against Pacific and 24 points against UNLV as well as game-highs in steals with 3 against Pacific and 2 against UNLV. He blistered the Tiger defense by connecting on 9-of-12 field goal attempts (75%), including 5-of-7 (71.4%) 3-pointers, a career-high. He also torched a stifling UNLV defensive pressure by hitting 10-of-16 from the field and three 3-pointers in the near upset over the Rebels. George has started all seven games in his first year at the Division I level and combines a strong defensive presence with keeping a young Bulldog team com-petitive by inserting emotion and passion into every game that he takes the floor.

Ladd Quietly Provides Spark from BenchAfter starting the first five contests, freshman guard Mychal Ladd moved to the spot as the Bulldogs’ sixth man to make room for Cartwright to take over as the starting point guard and responded by having two of his best games in his early Fresno State career. In the ‘Dogs win over Pacific, Ladd came up a rebound shy of his first career double-double with career-highs in points (19) and rebounds (9) and contributed 32 points off the bench on the week. Cleveland credits Ladd’s prowess in grabbing of-fensive rebounds as a key factor to the ‘Dogs first road win.

O’Neil Fills Role as Team LeaderFifth-year senior guard Dwight O’Neil returns for his final season with his hometown Bulldogs. O’Neil will split time at the wing and point this season. O’Neil is second in the conference with 5.6 assists per game. As the lone senior on the roster, O’Neil has stepped into the role as the bonafide team leader on and off the court.

‘Dogs Lead Conference in 3-Pointers, Blocks & Home AttendanceThe young and energetic Bulldog roster are steadily inching toward the top of the Western Athletic Conference statistical categories as they pace the WAC in 3-pointers made (7.73 per game), blocked shots (5.36 per game) and home attendance (8,666 per game. Freshman guard Paul George leads the conference in 3-point field goal percentage by hitting 25 of 48 three-point attempts while junior forward Sylvester Seay is tied for third in the WAC with 1.82 blocks per game. Senior guard Dwight O’Neil has been near the top of the assists category the whole season and currently is in second place with 5.45 assists per game. Fresno State is on track to once again lead the WAC in attendance for the sixth straight season.

With an unwavering commitment to excellence on the basketball court and in the classroom, Steve Cleveland embarks on the fourth leg of his journey to revitalize the storied tradition of Bulldog basketball by drawing on the solid foundation he has built for success. In his first three seasons at Fresno State, Cleveland posted a 50-42 mark to improve his career record to 188-150. The 2007-08 team paced the Western Athletic Conference for the second straight year with sharp shooting from beyond the arch by hitting 8.3 three pointers per contest while two Bulldogs, senior guards Kevin Bell and Eddie Miller, both landed as top 10 WAC scorers. The Bulldogs returned to the postsea-son for the first time in five years during the 2006-07 campaign. Their 22-10 overall record, which marks only the 16th time in school history a coach directed his squad to over 20 wins in a season and the most wins since the 1995-96 team, landed them a birth in the postseason NIT Tournament. Cleveland spent eight years at BYU as he completely transformed the Cougar program into a consistent postseason con-tender on the national level. Cleveland, the 17th head coach of the Fresno State men’s basketball program, and his wife, Kip, have three children - Casey, Skyler and Katie.

Cleveland File “Built to Last”With eight newcomers (six freshmen and two junior transfers) and only one senior, fourth-year head coach Steve Cleveland and his staff turns to the foundation of the team they have built to compete for a Western Athletic Conference Championship and the opportunity to play in the NCAA Tournament with the theme “Built to Last.” By focusing on academic and athletic excellence, Cleveland has instilled a distinct focus into the new brand of Bulldog Basketball.

Six Bulldogs Earn DegreesAs the Fresno State men’s basketball team continues to build a solid foundation for success, head coach Steve Cleveland takes pride in the academic achievements dur-ing 2008 that led to six Bulldogs completing their degrees. The graduating seniors included: Kevin Bell (Africana Studies), Renato Cesar (Kinesiology), Hector Hernan-dez (Criminology), Eddie Miller (Africana Studies), Ajay Riding (Communication) and Shawn Taylor (Africana Studies).

Bulldogs Celebrate 2nd Annual Children with Cancer Holiday PartyMen’s coach Steve Cleveland and women’s coach Adrian Wiggins hosted 107 families, including 250 children who are suffering from cancer and their siblings, for the Second Annual Children with Cancer Holiday in the Save Mart Center on Monday night. The event includes activities, dinner and toys for the children along with an opportunity to take pictures with Fresno State mascot TimeOut, Santa Claus as well as student-ath-letes from both the men’s and women’s basketball teams and Fresno State cheerlead-ers. The families also received turkeys and other food for upcoming Christmas and holiday dinners. Cleveland also ran the event while coaching at BYU.

‘Dogs Earn First Road Win as Freshmen Step UpFresno State defeated the Pacific Tigers, 66-64, for its first road victory of the 2008-09 season as true freshmen guards Paul George and Mychal Ladd torched the nets and boards during a back-and-forth battle that ended with senior guard Dwight O’Neil banking in the game-winning shot with 0.9 seconds left on the clock. The ‘Dogs shot a season-high 56.3 percent from the field against Pacific and won the rebounding contest. Earlier in the week, the Bulldogs nearly toppled the back-to-back Mountain West Conference tournament champion UNLV Runnin’ Rebels before falling, 82-76, on a night when O’Neil surpassed the 600-point mark in his Bulldog career and two Bulldogs scored more than 20 points in game (George - 24 & O’Neil - 21). Freshman point guard Bryce Cartwright earned his first collegiate start against the Rebels.

The dunk, where the freshman slashed straight to the basket and delivered the emphatic one-handed slam on a pair of Gael defenders, has received more than 50,000 views on YouTube.

National Exposure for BulldogsFresno State will play at least twice before national television audiences on ESPN and ESPN2. The Bulldogs’ first appearance came on Nov. 17 in their road opener against Saint Mary’s College at 11 p.m. as part of the ESPN College Hoops Tip Off, featuring a 24-hour marathon of college basketball programming. ESPN2 will showcase a WAC battle with Hawai’i on Thursday, Feb. 19 (8 p.m.) in the Save Mart Center.

Bulldog Sports Network to Broadcast Seven WAC GamesBulldog Sports Properties and Fresno State will broadcast seven-game men’s basket-ball schedule for the upcoming 2008-09 season on the Bulldog Sports Network. New this year, KAIL-TV Digital 7.1 (MY 53) will serve as the flagship station of Fresno State sports and air all of the Fresno State games in their entirety. Fresno State broadcasts can also be seen on MD Digital 7.1 on HDTV. The schedule of games can be found on the front page of the release in the “2008-09 Schedule/Results” section.

Three Future Bulldogs Join 2009 Recruiting ClassAccording to Rivals.com, the Bulldogs landed the 12th best mid-major recruiting class in the country as Greg Smith, Garrett Johnson and Jerry Brown, Jr. each signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Fresno State in 2009. Greg Smith (Fresno, Calif.), a 6’ 9” and 240 lbs. post player, will be called upon to contribute as a freshman with significant minutes. Garrett Johnson (Diamond Bar, Calif.), a 6’ 5” and 190 lbs. guard., will draw on his size and strength to also make an immediate impact by playing in the various positions of the ‘Dogs backcourt. Jerry Brown, Jr. (San Francisco, Calif.), a 6’ 6” and 195 lbs. post player, solidifies Cleveland’s approach of looking for student-athletes that have the skill to play different roles and the drive to take the program to the next level. Fresno State may add as many as two more during the late signing period.
