MUSIC NOTEWe thank Megan Schwark, a senior music education major, for sharing her singing with us. Today we hear music from a series of American composers. "Assurance" is a setting, by John Ness Beck (1930–1987), of the favorite hymn, No. 462, “Blessed Assurance.” Beck was born in Ohio and taught for many years at The Ohio State University. Cancer caused his untimely death at age 56. Albert Hay Malotte (1895–1964) was born in Philadelphia, studied composition with Victor Herbert in Philadelphia and New York, and organ with Georges Jacob in Paris. He wrote his famous setting of "The Lord’s Prayer" in 1935 by which time he had moved to Los Angeles where he composed many film scores, among other music. Dale Wood of Glendale, California (1934–2003) wrote our organ music, all based on American hymn tunes. The prelude is based on hymn No. 162, "What Wondrous Love is This," and the postlude on hymn No. 464, "When I Can Read My Title Clear."

As you prepare to worship, I invite you to meditate on the words of our special music or any of these hymns. Part of hymn No. 462, "Blessed Assurance," written by the American poet Fanny Crosby (1820–1915) is given here:

Perfect submission, all is at rest, I in my Savior am happy and blest, Watching and waiting, looking above, Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
