SECOND COLLECTION FOR OUR

SISTER PARISH HAITI NEXT WEEKEND

For the 20,000 plus people who reside in our sister parish area, their plight is through no fault

of their own, but merely a result of where they were born. From their place of need, their humble souls are gracious and kind. Possibly God uses these beautiful souls in Haiti to show the rest of the world where love and grace really begins, in our hearts. Let us always remember the people of sister parish in our prayers and continue to bless them with our gifts as we are able.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus overcomes the temptations to wealth, power and esteem. As we begin Lent, may we open our hearts to the grace of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Your almsgiving to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will help the poor celebrate the grace of God’s love this Easter.

KING’S CHALLENGE

For Lent, like Abraham with Isaac, without question, offer up some-thing that is good, you like it, and it is close to you.

As you read about Majd (pictured above) in the guidebook of your rice bowl, you will find that Majd and his family had been forced to flee violence in search of stability. How are we called to welcome the stranger in our midst? How can you support those, worldwide, who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities? Visit: crsricebowl.org for more information.

ORIGINS OF LENT

The word, “lent,” probably comes from the Anglo Saxon “lencten” meaning spring and the German “lenz” meaning the time when the days lengthen. In the early church, there was just one day of fasting, the day before Easter, which lasted until the Easter Vigil Eucharistic Celebration. It was at this celebration that candidates for the Christian community were baptized, confirmed and finally allowed to participate in the Eucharistic Celebration. Since the church was still an underground movement, the candidate was carefully screened and underwent a long preparation period, sometimes for years. But the forty days prior to the entrance into the community were the most intense. During this time, the bishop would give instructions to the catechumens. Several sets of these lectures survive; they were generally extended explanations of the creed which the catechumens memorized. Soon the Easter Eve fasting was extended to the week before Easter and then eventually into forty days commemorating Jesus’ fasting in the wilderness and the Israelites’ 40 years in the desert, among others.

WHY DO WE ABSTAIN FROM MEAT ON FRIDAYS DURING

LENT?

Abstaining from something helps us refocus on what is important and it cuts out the things that might have seemed important. By abstaining, we have better ability to concentrate on what is important: God. The tradition goes back to the first century, when Christians abstained from eating meat on Friday to honor Jesus’ death on the cross on Good Friday. Because Jesus sacrificed his flesh for the salvation of humankind, the flesh of warm-blooded animals wasn’t consumed on Friday. The practice of abstaining from certain foods actually goes back to the Old Testament. The bottom line: we show respect and honor for the Lord by this simple act of penance.

LENTEN PRAYER FOR TRANSFORMATION Loving Father, I invite you into my life today and make myself available to you. Help me to become the-best-version-of-myself by seeking your will and becoming a living example of your love in the world. Inspire me to live the Catholic faith in ways that are dynamic and engaging. Show me how to best get involved in the life of my parish. Give me courage when I am afraid, hope when I am discouraged, and clarity in times of decision. Teach me to enjoy uncertainty and lead your Church to become all you imagined it would be for the people of our times. Amen.

A Lent to Remember is a beautiful presentation on the transforming power of mercy in the Sacrament of Confession, using the Augustine Institute productions Symbolon and Forgiven. No matter what you have done, no matter how long you have been away, Jesus is waiting for you with open arms this Lent!
