The First Sunday of Lent

When he calls on me, I will answer him; I will deliver him and give him glory, I will grant him length of days. (cf. Psalm 91)

PENITENTIAL ACT

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,

(and striking their breast, they say)

through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7 RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 51 Cantor first, then All: Owen Alstott

SECOND READING Romans 5:12-19 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Frank Schoen

GOSPEL Luke 4: 1-13 HOMILY CREED I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(all bow through “and became man”)

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate

he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

On this First Sunday of Lent, dozens of people throughout the diocese will gather here at the Cathedral for the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion. Bishop Daly will preside over this Rite at 2:00 p.m. and all are invited. The Rite of Election celebrates the Lord’s choosing of people who acknowledge their call to receive the Easter

Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. It is an “election” because God has “voted” for them and they have in turn accepted the “election.” The Rite of Election marks a period of final preparation for catechumens during the weeks of Lent. During these days the Church is called to accompany and support these individuals as they seek purify their lives more intensely. This Rite also includes the Call to Continuing Conversion for those preparing to be received into full communion with the Church through Confirmation and First Communion. These candidates have already been baptized Catholic or baptized into another Christian tradition. Each year we are blessed to have a large number of catechumens and candidates at our Cathedral Parish. They meet each week to study, pray, and find fellowship and support. The following individuals are our catechumens: David Cogswell Tyler James Morgan Elijah Cogswell Alexandria Periera Dana Layne Dvorak The following individuals are our candidates: George Aguilera Antoniette Lettieri-Parkin Cindy Jo Anderson Riley Allen McCorkle Renee Buchmann Macklen George Scribner Daniel Castro Andre Toves Jennifer Ann Dvorak Rachel Winegart I am grateful to our RCIA team which includes Matthew Sewell, Melia Langdon, Justin Bullock, Tyler Breland, Charlie Wallblom, Pierce Shivers, and Sue Steadman. Their faith, dedication and support are greatly appreciated and they represent our parish very well. I encourage you to attend today at 2:00 p.m. as we support our catechumens and candidates on their final journey to full communion with the Catholic Church. Asking for the prayers of Our Lady of Lourdes, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ.

St. Teresa of Calcutta Pro-Life Group

The St. Teresa of Calcutta Pro-Life Ministry would like to encourage all parishioners to adopt an unborn baby that is in danger of an abortion. Please join us in protecting these little ones by reciting the following prayer for the lives of those unborn children in danger of abortion: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn child I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.

Leaving a Legacy

You can leave a legacy for future generations by remembering the Cathedral in your estate planning. The following language may be inserted into your will: I give, devise, and bequeath ___________ (insert dollar amount, percent of your estate, or item of property to be donated) to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes in Spokane, WA. Even small gifts, combined with those from other parishioners, add up to significant legacy support for generations of Catholics to come. Thank you for your consideration.

Knights of Columbus 2nd Sunday Breakfast

Please join us Sunday, March 8th after all morning Masses for breakfast

featuring a menu including pancakes, scrambled eggs, biscuits & gravy, sausage, bacon, coffee, & juice!

Sacramental Prep resumes on Wed., March 4th, at 6:15 p.m. as our candidates continue their preparation for Confirmation and First Holy Communion on Sunday, May 17. Please pray that our children continue to grow and persevere in holiness so that Jesus may always be first in their hearts.

St. Bernadette Guild Lead Volunteer Opportunity for Corporal Works of Mercy

Our parish requires a lead for St. Bernadette's Guild which prepares and serves receptions following a Funeral Mass. This is a very spiritual, rewarding position which falls under the Church's teachings on the Corporal Works of Mercy - in giving of support, service and hospitality to the bereaved family and friends who are

experiencing the loss of a loved one. You will have the support of an experienced team to assist with shopping, preparation and serving. This position requires someone who is sensitive to the needs of a grieving family. This could be a ministry shared between two people. Please contact Darlene at the Parish office at 358 - 4290 or email [email protected] for more information.

Stations, Soup & Lenten Presentations

Lent is right around the corner, and with it comes our annual Friday Night Soup

Suppers. We will hold a soup supper for the Parish every Friday through March 27th. Stations of the Cross begins at 5:15 pm, soup suppers begin at 5:45 pm, and Father Ratuiste has prepared a Lenten presentation to begin at 6:00 pm. Parents, mark your calendars: we will hold a special stations of the cross & soup supper for children on Friday, April 3rd. Our last stations of the cross will be held on Good Friday, April 10th, at 3:00 pm. There will be no soup supper that day.

First Friday

This coming Friday, March 6th, is First Friday and a day to honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In an appearance to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, Our Lord promised that whoever receives Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays will receive specific blessings. Among these blessings are the gift of final perseverance and the promise to receive the last sacraments before death. Plan on joining your fellow parishioners this Friday at Noon Mass.

Scriptural Reflection March 1, 2020 —First Sunday of Lent

GN 2:7-9; 3:1-7; PS 51:3-6,12-13,17; ROM 5:12-19 or 5:12, 17-19; MT 4:1-11

As we begin the beautiful and challenging season of Lent, our readings this week remind us why we need these 40 days so much. They also suggest a particular strategy we Christian stewards might take as we make the journey towards Easter. Our first reading takes us back to Genesis, reminding us of our Creator and the loving care and lavish gifts He gave to our ancestors, Adam and Eve. He created them out of pure love and provided abundantly for them. Life was good in the Garden! Until the first couple allowed just a sliver of doubt in the goodness of God to enter their minds. Swayed by the words of

the serpent, they became ungrateful and distrustful despite God’s great love and all the gifts of creation He had provided. Sound familiar? These same temptations threaten to pull us away from God today. Our Gospel passage, from Matthew, shows us by the example of Jesus Himself one way that we can attain spiritual strength and grow to become more effective disciples and stewards. In this passage, we find our Lord in the desert, fasting for 40 days and 40 nights. Like Adam and Eve, He is confronted by the evil one. But unlike our fallen parents, our Lord triumphs definitively over the devil’s lies and sends him slithering away. How did He do it? By knowing the Scriptures and by proclaiming them confidently. And by His perfect trust in the Father. This Lent, let us embrace this 40-day spiritual reset. Let us prioritize our use of time by committing to prayerful study of the Scriptures and trusting more deeply in the Father’s love. We will surely be better stewards by Easter.
