PRESIDENTS REPORT

Well here we all are again at the end of another wonderful Surf Lifesaving season. It has gone amazingly fast so we take time to reflect on all the wonderful things HBSLSC has achieved. Thank you to all the club members & their families for all your help &support throughout the season especially for all the work leading up to the Junior Championships held on our beach this year. Thank you to all the Championship committee members for all your time & dedication to make the titles a success. Chris Donnelly & Don Burchill were the driving forces behind this committee so a big thank you. Wayne Ahrens who worked closely with Bryan Hart, Chris Donnelly, Chris Mooney & others on the Patrol Tower project thank you from everyone on the amazing Tower we have for our beach. Management I wish to thank the Club Board & management committee members for their dedication to their positions and commitment to fulfilling the enormous of making our Surf Club operate as effective as possible. On behalf of all members I would like to say a ' big thank you & well done ' to Bryan Hart - Deputy President, Katrina Smith -Secretary, Roo Eason - Treasurer, Darren Horton – IRB Captain, Tony Grima -Surf Sports Manager, Don Burchill OAM - Boat Captain, Phil Munson - Publicity Officer, Nick Miller U19 Vice Captain, Kirra Horton U17 Vice Captain, Sue Murray -Supporters Club President. Fundraising We have been fortunate in gaining a range of sponsorships, donations & grants this year which has been wonderful. It always helps but we still need to fundraise to be able to purchase new equipment for our club members. This season the Supporters Club were lucky to be able to purchase for the club a new ATV & gave the Surf Club a substantial amount of money that helps with the running of the club & purchasing of equipment. If anyone has any free time & has any ideas for fundraising please bring them forward to get them approved & make it happen. It will benefit one & all. Thank you to all members who have worked tirelessly volunteering their time to work on the Bar on Saturday afternoons. This is a major fundraising part of the club & we do have a few functions throughout the year especially towards Christmas which benefits the club enormously. Competition Well done to all competitors and helpers who have added to our tradition of doing our best and competing fairly. The club has had some great results this year with Branch & State Champions & Aussie medal winners. A BIG congratulations to everyone as you have made us all proud along with being an inspiration to all members. The Masters resurgence is still going strong and is great to see members medalling at events & importantly having fun. The Officials in our club have again worked hard to represent our club so that that we can compete. Thank you!! If you want to become an Official next season put your hand up & do the course ' have a go ' you will have fun. Juniors I am sure like myself Sunday mornings is a special time of the week. Our beach is full of enthusiastic kids full of life, smiles, energy & sometimes the odd tear. Red and White caps with a group of green caps all wearing pink

rash singlets with parents looking on proudly does make a spectacular sight for all. It's a credit to Phil -JAC with the help of Col & all the Age Managers, water safety and helpers that make this vital part of our club run professionally & without too much fuss. Lifesaving Once again we have seen another increase in patrolling members and award holding members throughout the club. To those that did many voluntary patrols and did over 50 or more hours, thank you and congratulations. Cadets you are an integral part of our patrolling success so keep up the good work as many of you have done 50 or more hours or were close. It doesn't matter how many hours but the fact is you volunteered your time to keep our beach safe for others. Well done!! Thank you to Darren Everard, Jo D'Emelio & Darren Horton who rescued a kite surfer who got into difficulty one blustery afternoon just on dark. If it wasn’t for your quick response it might have been a different outcome. I am sure he & his family will be forever grateful! To all members who completed their bronze medallion and those who have added to their collection, congratulations. Without continual training and upgrades to existing skills, we cannot continue the huge array of lifesaving operations effectively. To all members nominated for special Branch or State awards, congratulations & I wish you all the very best. Future Nothing is a certainty in life or lifesaving but for our club's future & growth we must continue to move with the times but follow core objects of the lifesaving movement while developing new strategies to attract new members, have fun and make our beaches the place to be and most of all saving lives. To all members, I would like to say thank you for your support & it has been an honour to help in some way in making your lifesaving a fulfilling experience. Last but not least I would like to thank my family for their support, patience & understanding of what we have achieved as a successful club. Also thank you to my Surf Club family for all your ongoing support & friendship as it means so much to me.

Regards Sue Murray HBSLSC President

TREASURERS REPORT

Another fantastic year on and off the beach. My congratulations to all those competitors who have

participated during the season; whether or not you have won a medal, by just competing you have done our

club and yourself proud.

Where to start……. Junior State…., We did it… Again! An absolutely awesome event!

My thanks to all involved, we were a few numbers down on volunteers this time but with teamwork and long

days, we pulled it off, we made a reasonable profit from the weekend over the bar and BBQ which will be used

to assist in the general running of the club. Thank you to the Sponsors and suppliers who did us some great

deals to keep costs down and in particular the Fraser Coast Regional council for their cash injection to help

cover some costs.

The new patrol tower has now been erected and looks fantastic. This was funded by a federal government

grant. A very big thank you to Chris Donnelly and Wayne Ahrens for looking after this project.

We have been fortunate enough again to receive a substantial amount of grants this season.

$7000.00 for 2 new IRB motors, $5000.00 for a kitchen upgrade/ tidy up and $10,000.00 for a new ATV, We

will sell the existing ATV in the Off season and $1500.00 for a new Marquee. The concreting of the grassed

area will take place once the sea defence project is finished. There are a number of grants in the pipeline at

the moment and will let you know in due course.

Without the financial support and the hours of volunteer support of our sponsors we could not function as we

do. They believe in what we do as a club and their support is invaluable. Our sincere thanks to Bayside

Radiology, Wide Bay Motor Group, (we have had a lot of positive feedback about the Toyota Hilux at

carnivals), Hervey Bay RSL and Sub Branch, Torquay Hotel, Golden Shores, The Boat Club, Channel 7 Wide Bay,

Bob Wicks from Bob’s Tyres, Select Shopfitters, Sports First, Craig Thompson from Thommo’s Plumbing Not

forgetting the “ Lovely Lady” who has donated several thousand dollars towards junior boards and skis again

this season and to all the other supporters of our wonderful club.

We picked up a few new sponsors this season, The Chameleon group They have taken a sign on the front of

the club and help us out with printing and signage. Thank you to Rob Garland for setting this up. I am in

negotiation also with a new company to the bay, The Infinity Group who own and run 5 Pharmacies in the Bay

(Wizard Pharmacies) This is at an Early stage but hopefully they will assist us financially with uniforms. We

have also signed up with AMART sports for a “kickback” on products sold to our members, So don’t forget to

say you are a Hervey Bay SLSC member when you purchase goods from AMART sports. To all others who

support us… Thank You. Please support our sponsors and buy locally when you can.

The Management Committee would like to acknowledge the Federal Government, in particular Keith Pitt,

Queensland Government, Department of Community Services, SLSA, SLSQ and the Fraser Coast Regional

Council for their continued support and financial input. We would also like to acknowledge the Hervey Bay

SLS Supporters Club for their ongoing financial assistance of the surf club. The Supporters club had a fantastic

season and has passed over in excess of $30,000.00 plus this season to the Surf Club, My thanks to the

volunteers who have manned the bar this season.

On a personal note, I would like to thank my fellow committee members for their support, encouragement,

friendship and team spirit through what has been an extremely busy year for us all. Thanks to my darling wife,

Anita for preparing the accounts and keeping the never ending stream of surf club paperwork I take home in

envisaged.

Looking forward to another great upcoming season!

CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT

September 17th brought about HBSLS club's first patrol this season, with a few new patrolling members joining

our ranks throughout our patrol groups.

This season our beaches were kept safe with 9 patrol groups and 2 life member surveillance teams. Although

water rescues weren't a prominent part of our services this year we did have a few lost children and multiple

first aids which kept our teams on their toes.

This year's stats are as follows:

Description Population/Number

Swimmers Between Flags 3903

Swimmers Outside Flags 6222

Craft Users 2612

People on the Beach 38483

Minor First Aid (Cut and Abrasions) 24

Public Relations 684

Total First Aid 44

Total Preventative Actions 789

We also had a few rescues not only during patrol times but in early evening once patrols had finished for the

day. Notable rescues were 2 people off shore on 2 separate occasions at the end of the Urangan jetty and a

kite surfer who was exhausted from the prevailing wind conditions found himself being blown out to see

approx 1k off shore. He was rescued by 2 of our members following a report from a concerned member of the

public.

Patrol Tower

Thanks to the generosity of our Federal Member for Hinkler Mr Keith Pitt. Hervey Bay Surf Life Saving Club

were the thankful recipients of a Federal grant to provide funds for a new patrol tower which was erected just

before the 2017 Junior State Titles. The new patrol tower boasts a safe and secure 2 storey base tower with

external walking area and totally fitted out interior with cabinetry, lighting, camera's, telephone, power and

water access.

The new tower will benefit our patrols by allowing our members greater vision from the elevated position and

therefore increasing our line of site across our beaches. It can also double up for event commentary position

and provide higher level of viewing access during the Pier to Pub and similar events that run the length of our

local beaches.

IRB/Waters Safety

Again this season we have been very involved in our community supplying water safety to different groups and

clubs by providing water safety for their events. Following our annual IRB Crew and Driver Training courses we

have brought a few our younger bronze holders into the IRB crew ranks and up graded a few IRB crew persons

to drivers.. The more drivers and crew we can help gain their award the better equipped our patrols will be to

provide our services with Hervey Bay waters.

I would like to thank the dedicated members that enable the Hervey Bay Surf Club to provide this service to

our community. These members consistently volunteer their private time and turn up with smiles on their

faces ready to jump into the sometimes very cool waters and provide water safety for these events required.

Early morning starts has its benefits when you can enjoy what life has to offer on our local beach and ocean.

Waverunner 30

In the 2016/ 2017 Hervey Bay Surf Life Saving Club members of the volunteer Rescue Water Craft (RWC) patrol group ran through-out the season again.. This service is becoming more and more necessary due to the increased amount of PWC craft users accessing our local beaches and water ways. Our members and the RWC service, patrol from Gataker Bay through to Pulgul Street Beach for 4 hours shifts and concentrate on liaising with beach goers, boat owners and craft users advising and sometimes implementing local council and PWC guidelines. The RWC craft provides our club with a valuable tool to provide our community with water safety awareness and also provides allows the community to be aware that our service is on the water ready for duty during the peak holiday times .

Beach Patrols Due to a decrease in available patroling members we have to reduce our team groups back down to 9 patrol

teams. However our patrol groups are still a dedicated as ever and keep our beach monitored and safe

throughout the season. Not only providing our ocean based services, our patrol groups provide first aid

services to a variety of people around the club area and beyond.. Dedication to our movement and sense of

community services it what keeps our members on the beach and turning up for our patrols. Some of us spend

a little too much time on the beach and are very guilty of enjoying what the lifestyle brings.

This year's outstanding members that have dedicated their time to water safety, and patrolling include:

Finally, I would like acknowledge the sad loss of a past Junior/Cadet member this season.

Dominic Merritt joined our club with his family as a junior life saver in our nipper program and continued on,

to be a popular and successful young competitor. Through-out his years at the club "Dom" was respected by

his fellow junior and cadet members and he continuously showed his respect to his peers and senior members

of our club at all times. After finishing year 12 Dom left our club and Hervey Bay to further is education

through University with hope of achieving his educational and life ambitions. His passing came as shock to us

all and for those that knew Dom from his time at our club his memory will remain with us in our hearts and

with members of the Hervey Bay Surf Club into the future.

JUNIOR ACTIVITIES REPORT

As I look back on the season I like to measure it by our Junior Presentation day. I know we have a lot that goes on through the season with competition and awards. But our sport is unique where the whole family can get involved where we not only do our sport but serve the Community as well. We are a Family Club with the emphasis on fun. So on saying this, our Junior Presentation Day (which was held on the Sunday 19th March 2017) had 215 people attend. This alone says something for itself. Again we held our AGM on this day and it was great to nearly fill all the positions on the Committee for next season. This was followed by our Presentation of all Awards, Certificates and Trophies achieved during the season.

This season we had 178 Greencappers and Nippers registered. Although not all of them attended our beach at once we still had a large amount of kids on the beach every Sunday, which needed a good team to keep these mornings running smoothly.

To kick every Sunday morning off, the Supporters Club had the canteen rocking all season with many thanks to

Sue Murray and Roo Eason and their helpers. This is an area where the parent need to step up and help out.

An excellent team of Age Managers and Assistants once again made life easier. Thanks to our Water Safety Officers who kept our nippers safe in the water every Sunday morning and during carnivals.

All of the above people are volunteers and we are always looking for more helpers next season to make their

jobs easier. [So come along and join a great team]

Fundraising

Chocolates were the fundraising start to the season. Most families took home a box or two on sign-on day,

close to $2,000 was raised again this season.

Camps

We had a number of our Youth attend the various WBC Youth Development Camps These camps are great and I hope to see some new faces there next season.

WBC Athlete Development Camp was held again and we had good attendance from our club.

Surf Education

In November, our Under 14’s gained their Surf Rescue Certificates, and now have all joined the patrolling

ranks. Some of our Under 13’s who were old enough also gained their Surf Rescue Certificates. All other Surf

Education Awards were completed ahead of schedule. These include the below awards.

Carnivals

Our 4-pt carnivals this season were again well attended. These carnivals are very casual and they are a great day for newcomers to Surf Lifesaving as well as seasoned campaigners. Carnivals at Bundaberg, Moore Park and Elliott Heads.

In late October, our Nippers, as well as Cadets, Seniors, parents and officials travelled the 800 km to participate in the North Australian Championships in Mackay. We had some excellent performances and came home with many top 6 finishes.

The Branch Surf Rescue Championships were held at Elliott Heads. We had representatives in Champion

Lifesaver event.

In February, the Junior Branch Championships were held at Yeppoon. We came home with gold medals, silver

medals and bronze medals, a great result. With a lot of personal best results. Congratulation to all.

In March, the Junior State Championships were held at Our beach. Some of the results are below.

Brooke Linford Silver, U12 Female Flags

Layla Martiensen Bronze, U11 Sprints

March Past Bronze

General

This season we were fortunate enough to have regular training sessions through the week. Tony Grima ran his

beach sessions twice a week and our water coach Chris Donnelly, had 3 mid week sessions and one Saturday

session.

At times we had over 35 people attending these sessions. These will continue next season.

The 2016/17 Season was another great season for all. I have enjoyed this season and I look forward to

2017/2018.

I would also like to wish the new elected committee lead by Brendan Parker and Age managers all the best for

the coming season

The Supporters Club has made contributions to some significant purchases for the benefit of all members throughout the season. They have tried to ensure all members were happy across a wide range of activities, food, drinks, clothing & equipment. The food on Sunday mornings has been popular with all. The Supporters Club team with the help of amazing parents set up early on a Sunday morning then help pack up after junior activity mornings, club carnivals or events have finished packing up & cleaning up. We are always looking for more volunteers to help in supporters club as it is a fundraiser for the club. It doesn't matter how much or how long you can help as every little bit helps. I would like to thank parents who helped throughout the season & over the Junior Championships weekend, it was greatly appreciated. It would also be nice to see new faces join the volunteers as it's only a couple of hours on Sunday morning in the canteen to help cook bacon & egg burgers , hot chips etc. As the season closed I have now hung up my apron, so the canteen will need new people to come in & cook for Sunday mornings. After years of cooking on Sunday mornings I have stepped down so new people can enjoy the fun time. I have enjoyed it immensely but now that I no longer have kids in the club it's time for me to step back & I encourage any junior parents to do this role. Also it's a great way to meet other club members & what a great way to spend Sunday mornings but at the beach! Thank you everyone & well done!! Sue Murray President Supporters Club

SURF SPORTS REPORT

As usual the season started well with the running of the Hervey Bay Masters carnival.

This year we had 104 nominations down on the previous year but still a good number of competitors to kick

off the season

The second major carnival the club attended was the North Australian Championships, our numbers were

down at this carnival as well but that did not stop our competitors achieving some amazing results with 3 of

our competitors winning the beach champion medal for their age groups and 4 of our members being chosen

in the QLD Country Team

The 4 members to be chosen in the QLD Country Team were, Mia McWilliam, Steffi Miller, Liam Farrelly and

myself, with the 3 age champions being, Mia, Liam and Myself

After North Aussies, we had our local branch carnivals, for the juniors it was the 4 pointers and for the seniors

it was the premiership series, all carnivals were well attended and gave both our junior and senior competitors

plenty of competition in preparation for the upcoming branch, state and Australian championships later in the

season

At junior branch which was held at Yeppoon our young nippers had a great time and all preformed to the best

of their abilities and along the way picked up a bunch of medals. It was very pleasing for both Chris and I to see

our competitors doing so well on both the beach and in the water, this is always a hard time for Chris and

myself as we are Referees at this carnival and don’t get to see too much of the events because in our roles as

referees we are organising events to keep the carnival moving along. This is one of the main reasons we have a

team get together on Saturday night this year sadly it didn’t happen which was a huge let down for us.

Senior branch was held on our beach which was great to host in preparation for the State Youth

Championships which we were hosting just a month later

Our numbers were very good with a lot of members competing for the first time as a club we competed well

picking up a heap of top 6 placings

Next came the State Youth Championships which we hosted for a second time at this point I would like to

congratulate Chris Donnelly as our club organiser in this event, our club did a great job in hosting the carnival

with nothing but praise for our efforts and the running of the event so on that note a special thank you to all

those that assisted in making this event a great success not just for our club but for the whole community

At the championships, our u11-u15 competed against the best in the state and by the end of the carnival we

finished with 3 state medals

A 2nd

to Brooke Linford in the u12 flags, a 3rd

to Layla Martiensen in u11 sprints and a 3rd

in March Past which

are all amazing results, but it’s not all about winning medals at the end of the day it was a pleasure to see our

young competitors just having a go and finishing the events with big smiles regardless of where they finished

After the Youth Championships we headed off to the senior state championships with 6 competitors attending

but even with just those 6 competitors we were able to return with 11 top 6 placings which meant we finished

the highest in the branch in the seniors and 2nd

in the branch for the masters another great result for our small

club at state we won 6 medals in total Kym Lingard won a bronze in tube race & flags ,Fiona McDonnell won a

bronze in flags, I won a silver in sprints and Liam Farrelly won a bronze in both sprints & flags

As you can see some great results at such a high level especially for Fiona and Kym as this was only the 2nd

carnival they attended

Now onto the Australian Championships this is an amazing event with over 7000 competitors taking part we

had 4 young competitors compete Kayla Lewis & Krissy Horton u15’s and our 2 u17 competitors who achieved

Page 22: CONTENTSherveybaysurfclub.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/... · rash singlets with parents looking on proudly does make a spectacular sight for all. It's a credit to Phil -JAC

awesome results Steffi Miller who finish in the top 16 in Australia in both u17’s sprints and flags and Liam

Farrelly who finished 10th

in the u17 sprints and 3rd

in flags as you could imagine this is a super amazing result

for the competitors and the club as a whole. In closing I would like to say a special thank you to all the team

managers and water safety throughout the year and I would like to also mention all the officials that officiated

at carnivals this season, Don Burchill OAM, John Gillard, Chris Donnelly, KC Farrelly, Julie Thomson, Col Linford

and Myself

Now as a club if you look at all the officials listed here 7 in total only 1 has nippers involved in the club so as

you can imagine it is very hard to get officials to attend carnivals never the less as a club we must supply 1

official for every 8 competitors that attend carnival so if those 6 other officials were not here next season only

8 competitors could compete. Therefore, next season the club needs parents to step up and get involved in

officiating otherwise as I stated only 8 nippers will be able to attend carnivals

To finish off I would like to say job well done to both the junior and senior committee especially Sue Murray

our club and supporters president what a super human effort she has put in again this season and hopefully

next season we can get a little more help in the canteen on Sunday mornings otherwise the canteen will not be

opening

Have a great off season

SAFETY OFFICERS REPORT

Another year have floated pass with very little incidents to club members.

It has been a reasonable year for advancement, new safety protocols have been implemented for the branch

through Surf lifesaving Queensland’s (SLSQ) head office.

Mid 2016, the surf club had its first safety audit which again is a new aspect of surf lifesaving; I am pleased to

report the surf club had a pass mark of 96%

Other improvements from SLSQ, is the implementation of a reporting system that finds my safety reports

going to the branch committee, where the “Branch Safety Officer” presents them.

As I said last year:

Safety is not a once off fix it, it’s re-occurring, and the only way to keep on top of it, is everyone pitches in and

helps:

Identify an issue and report it – ring someone or leave a note

When you use a piece of equipment, replace it where you found it

We all have a “Duty of Care” for the wellbeing of fellow club members, visitor’s and beach goers.

Have a relaxing few months and I’ll see you in the 2017 – 2018 season

Regards,

Ron Thomas

Safety Officer

SPONSORS & SUPPORTERS

It is with great pleasure that we are again able to report another fabulous year with generosity of a wonderful

group of sponsors, with a warm welcome to the Chameleon Group.

I would like to make special mention of the Hervey Bay RSL & Services Memorial Club, who have extended

their major sponsorship, now in its seventh year. Their support for our juniors is invaluable.

Our sponsors are recognised throughout the Annual Book, clubhouse, web page and what’s happening

newsletter. In addition, the club executive continues to encourage that all members acknowledge and

patronise the businesses that help underpin continued success to our club.

The demands for investment in modern facilities and high operating costs with increasing membership and

community expectations is a major challenge for any club.

However, our sponsors have allowed our management to satisfactorily provide all members with the

necessary rescue and training equipment such as ATV vehicle, patrol trailer, rescue boards and tubes, skis,

safety clothing, training boards, first aid equipment and surf boat.

On behalf of the club management and its members, we extend our sincere appreciation to all our sponsors

and supporters for putting our club in great position to hit the ground running for the 2017-18 season.
