3Modern Art Gallery
IntroductionModern Art Gallery is located the area-adjoining Kashmere Gate
Monument, which is at the fringe of the Walled City of Shahajahanbad.
The Gallery represents the numerous layers of contemporary colors,
which have resulted in a rich, eclectic and vibrant, mix on canvas and
paper. Our Endeavour is aimed at supporting talented Artists to exhibit
works and to expose to aesthetic series of Art.
Since its inception, Modern Art Gallery (MAG) has promoted
contemporary Indian art through exhibitions, Charity programs, Joint
Launches etc. Over the last few years, the gallery has become the locus
through which the works of both modern and contemporary artists
have reached the public. MAG’s position as an artistic interlocutor with
the public is especially vital in Central and North Delhi because of the
lack of any such Gallery in close vicinity.
The artists we feature are diverse, in their own style of painting, yet
all of them somehow seem to deal in discovering Indian mythology or
life of the common man. At the gallery we get to delve into each art,
considering the subject matter, message or over all mood of the work.
We can, when looking closely, even examine some of the materials and
techniques used to help create the work that first caught our eye.
It has been an exciting time working closely with some of India’s finest
artists from different generations. Our gallery houses works of some
Indian masters such as Lalu Prasad Shaw, Jogen Chowdhury and
MF Hussain. We have had a long track record with the Senior Artists
such as Thota Vaikuntham, Subrata Gangopadhya, Lalu Prasad Shaw,
Shyamal Mukherjee, Parish Maity, Vijender Sharma, Biplab Biswas,
Laxma Gaud and Ramesh Gorjala, who are also internationally
acclaimed. Furthermore, we continuously aim to promote and support
talented Indian artists such as Somnath Singh, Ajay Bhowmik, Madhuri
Bhaduri and others through our platforms.

Our Collection:
In a fast paced, stressed out life of an urban dweller, there must be
a place to retreat, a quiet corner where one can connect with the
divine nature.
A place where one hears celestial whispers. Presenting artworks of
Nagesh Gaud and Ramesh Gorjala, with their sensitive and detailed
mythological portrayals of various Indian gods and goddesses and
their narratives by contemporizing the Kalamkari techniques in
a manner that is both delicate and intricate. The portrayal of the
holy place Varanasi, and the “Rasleela” between Radha and Krishna
by Biplab Biswas, fall in line with our effort of presenting celestial
whispers.
We further our collection of figurative works by Lalu Prasad
Shaw’s portyal of the Bengali man and woman, Jogen Chowdhury’s
“Untitled” ink, Thota Vaikuntams “Telangana Couple” and Subrato
Gangopadhyas “Dancing Girls”. Our abstract art showcases the
heavenly skies by Paresh Maity, the eternal beauty by Shampa Sircar,
the birds by Farhad Hussain and nature in its bloom by
Madhuri Bhaduri.
Our gallery also houses sculptures, brass and fiber glass figures, and
photography by renowned artists such as Hari Kadam and Gunjan.
Our sculptures have been installed at various restaurants and
institutions across the country.

Thota VaikuntamBorn in 1942, in Boorugupali, Andhra Pradesh,.
Thota Vaikuntam is an Indian painter who in his
paintings captures the simple lifestyle of villagers
of Telangana, such as paddy fields, toddy pots
on shoulders of men, the household chores and
temple rituals.
T. Vaikuntam completed a Diploma in Painting
at the College of Fine Arts and Architecture,
Hyderabad, in 1970, and then another in Painting
and Printmaking from the Faculty of Fine Arts at
Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, in 1972.
The love for women in his paintings can be
traced back to his childhood fascination by the
impersonations of women characters by the male
artists of the theatre groups performing in his
village. His muse is the sensuous and voluptuous
women of Telangana with their omnipresent
vermilion bindis, draped in colourful sircilla sarees
that highlight their dusky skin- depicting them in
a larger than life format.

Paresh MaityBorn in 1965, Paresh Maity won the Padma
Bushn for his contribution to the art field in 2014.
In a short time, he has had 79 sols shows in India
and abroad.
“Water-colours are my heart & soul” says Paresh
Maity who over a period of the last 20 years has
achieved proficiency in the medium a few can
claim. Whatever surface the artist may choose, be
it paper, canvas or any other medium, he creates
magic with his vibrant colours and
geometricized forms.

The sand dunes of Rajasthan, the backwaters of
Kerala, the canals of Venice, to the lake of Geneva,
echo with the passion of Paresh. The artist has
also had a brief interaction with abstract, freeing
him from the limitations of his landscapes.

Lalu Prasad ShawBorn in 1937, Lalu Prasad Shaw is widely known
for his highly stylized portraits of Bengali women
and couples, with most emphasis on the physical
characteristics of his subjects.
This senior artist draws his inspiration primarily
from nature and the milieu surrounding the great
Bengali middle class, often depicting pleasant and
quiet scenes from his own life on his canvases
and papers. His style is unique and modern in its
adaptation of academic and traditional
Indian formats.
His painted characters communicate with
calibrated eloquence by his chosen style which
is derived from the era when Indian artists were
drafted to paint to meet the needs of colonial
rulers and period style figuration. His contribution
to modern Indian art cannot be under-estimated.

Hanuman, Ramesh GorjalaAcrylic On Canvas
32 X 60 in.
Ramesh GorjalaBorn in 1979, Gorjala portrays his take on Indian
mythology through imagery and process. His use
of a palette dominated by gold, red and green
creates a very rich and natural feel in each of his
paintings, and the moods that he can create and
convey, add an antiquated yet contemporary
dynamic to his work.
His subjects, mainly the gods, goddesses and
mythical forms of the South Asian pantheon,
include Hanuman, Vishnu and Buddha, and are
all painted with great sensitivity and attention to
detail. Another repeated element in his work is
the checkerboard pattern of black and shades of
white and grey in the background, adding a noel
and modern twist to pieces that have a largely
traditional and spiritual feel.
Ramesh Gorjala studied at Jawaharlal Nehru
Technological University in Hyderabad, where
he received his bachelor’s degree in painting. You
will experience Indian mythology in a new way
through his canvas.

Farhad HussainBorn in 1975, Farhad’s bases his works on the
realities of human relationships and their subtle
ironies, with the support of humour. Farhad’s
paintings dwell on the human where each figure
is an integral part of the work having its own a
personality, which nurtures the narrative.
In terms of structure and concepts his recent
works deal with more thought provocative
intricacies, which may leave one awe struck
at the first glance. The underlying sublimity of
humour and irony betray the true experience of
the artist. On his canvas you will find only bright
and vibrant colours. An interesting technique
used throughout his works is the method of
applying colour- dot-by-dot till the entire area is
completely covered.
A 2003 graduate from Shantiniketan, Hussain
completed his postgraduate diploma from the
Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda in 2005.

Jogen ChowdhuryBorn in 1939, Jogen Chowdhury is an eminent
Indian painter and considered an important
painter of 21st century India.
Jogen Chowdhury is known for his ability to
successfully marry traditional imagery with the
zeitgeist of contemporary painting, in a skilful
blend of an urbane self-awareness and a highly
localized Bengali influence. A quality of darkness
may be seen to inhere in Chowdhury’s work
and this darkness can be understood to evoke
an aura of mystery. It is an effect enhanced in
Chowdhury’s more recent works, which in turn
crops the central image. Chowdhury explains that
“The purpose is to hide some parts.
The moment I show the entire figure, the interest
in the details would be lost. Earlier on, the figures
were observed in their natural bearings which
came through expressionistic stylization and the
weight of reality was greater. There is an effect of
distancing today.”
He has graduated from the Government College
of Art & Craft, Kolkata and subsequently from
École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris
in 1967.
