DAĞHAN ÖZİL - Galeri Artist

We went through a very successful fair this year at Contemporary Istanbul. Our special exhibition of works by Ergin İnan received a lot of interest from local and international collectors and we sold many works exhibited in this section. Works by artists Ömer Uluç and Tony Cragg also proved to be commercially successful.

ANTONIO COLOMBO - Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporenea

This was our first year at Contemporary Istanbul and we are quite satisfied with the quality of the general organization of the fair. We definetly want to be part of Contemporary Istanbul next year. We sold a number of works by our artist Zio Ziegler whom we exhibited as part of Solo Shows.

I am very proud to be part ofContemporary Istanbul for the past 10 years and to have experienced every stepforward together. Networking was veryproductive, and sales wise it was also a very active year. It is so exciting to see thatnew interest towards contemporary art is forming, I have seen younger generationof collectors leading the way. They are dynamic but also they have done theirhomework. Happy 10th Anniversary!

Fredy Hadorn – LICHT FELD Gallery

We participated Contemporary ıstanbul for the first time in 2008. This was also the firt time I saw the potential of the fair. This is mainly the reason why I decided to participate again this year. There was a lot interest in Marck’s video works and we had some good sales.

CURATORIAL PROJECT / COMFORT #4 INSTALLATIONSabina Lang and Daniel Baumann are a Swiss artist duo who have worked together since 1990 under the name Lang/Baumann. Not ones to limit themselves to the confines of exhibition spaces, Lang/Baumann are known for creating works of ambitious scale that all but take over the public sphere. Attracted to unexploited public spaces, they compellingly intervene with them, and in doing so, have gone on to create a range of situ artworks such as furnishing, mural paintings, sculptures and installations that play with elements of architecture and design. Curated by Marc-Olivier Wahler, Lang/Baumann met the audience with their outdoor installation titled Comfort #4 at Contemporary Istanbul entrance. This exclusive work was the first project the artist duo has realized in Turkey.

PLUGINDedicated to showcasing artworks within the interaction of science, technology, politics and art, Plugin New Media Section of Contemporary Istanbul ran between November 12th and November 15th, 2015 at the Istanbul Convention and Exhibition Centre (ICEC) under a curatorial theme: X-CHANGE.

In its 3rd year, the main structure and curatorial process of Plugin New Media Section is updated by considering the technical function of “plugin” as a fundamental layer. In digital cultures, plugin is basically described as a module, which interacts with one another to support and update a file format or a device by supplementing it with a specific function. By making a supplement to the existing format of a contemporary art fair, this year galleries, independent artists, architecture and design studios, maker spaces, game labs, digital art collectives and project spaces proposed multiple ways of X-CHANGE in Plugin.

PLUGIN WORKSHOPS

Plugin Workshops was an extension of the curatorial theme of Plugin 2015: “X-CHANGE.” The workshops were designed for young people between the ages of 7 and 13, who are interested in science, art, and technology. The aim of the workshops was to develop the skills of young generation via digital culture using collaborative team work, interaction, do it yourself approach and exchange. Plugin Workshops created a new space for the participants in making creative interventions by utilizing electronic and artistic skills.

Plugin Workshops was a mutual project with Beşiktaş Municipality. Organizers: Maker Education Act and SPOTTER Kids.

PLUGIN TALKSThis year Plugin New media Section had a great talk program, which was linked with X-CHANGE theme. Plugin Talks were based on short conversations and chats among researchers, scientists, architects, designers, artists and visitors about a certain topic in an informal forum format. The speakers presented the best practices of their interests with regards to the emerging new media artworks and research.

Organizers: Bubi Sanat/Bilim/Doğa Derneği, Elif Demirci, Burcu Çarıkçıoğlu

PLUGIN WALKSCreative Çukurcuma’s second meeting of interactive art explorations took place at Plugin. Discovering this year’s theme ‘X-CHANGE,’ participants got a chance to discover galleries, independent artists, architecture and design studios, makerspaces, digital arts collectives, game laboratories, networks, art departments of research uni-versities through games and exchanges of ideas, and to have conversations with artists and designers. Meeting provided them with a platform for mutual exchange of knowl-edge aiming the “X-CHANGE” between the artworks at Plugin and the participants. It ended with an evaluation of the overall experience at Plugin Lounge.

Organizers: Creative Çukurcuma (Mine Kaplangı & Naz Cuguoğlu), Çisem Asya Albaş, Oğulcan Haşlaman, Cansu Şimşek

CI EDITIONSCI Editions is Contemporary Istanbul’s initiative and business toshare, and promote various formal and conceptual dimensionsof art editions and multiples. It is a platform for the production, communication, mediation and sale of art editions. CI Editionsis aiming at presenting editions as an important field of art’sproduction, as well as an effective way to distribute art works tovarious audiences, and win new collectors and art lovers. In thisway, CI Editions means an alternative to an elitist and exclusivenotion of art, as it believes in the importance of a wider integration of art in society.

CI Editions does not produce reproductions, and does not sellor resell existing prints, as the selected artist produce editionsexclusively for CI Editions. It goes beyond the traditional idea ofprinted editions, and understands editions as limited works of art in the field of printing (etching, lithography, silk screen print, digital print etc.), artist books, photography, video, sculpture/ object, neon, and sound on vinyl or other media.

AUSTRALIA CHINA ART FOUNDATION

In a project coordinated by the Australia China Art Foundation (ACAF), Contemporary Istanbul hosted diverse and challenging group of art works by Chinese artists.

Building Bridges included artists Ling Jian, Shao Yinong and Mu Chen (ACAF), aaajiao (Leo Xu Projects, Shanghai), Tao Hui (Aike DellArco, Shanghai), Yang Xin and Zheng Jiang (Space Station, Beijing). The initiative also featured ‘Parade,’ a group show curated by art critic Aimee Lin, who has suggestsed the metaphor of “parade” represents the national collective imagination of China’s political and social modernity. Inspired by Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of the carnivalesque style of literature, the aim of the project was to build up another kind of parade: the artistic parade of individual voices.

In the future, collaboration will extend to Australian artists and will also bring artists from Turkey and the Middle East to China and Australia.
