Dunman Secondary School Choir

The Choir is proud to be the the only Performing Arts CCA in Dunman Secondary School to

have achieved 15 gold awards nationally and internationally since 1997.

A brief look at our history and track record…

The choir is directed by the prominent conductor Mr Toh Ban Sheng and supported by a

committed team of teachers. Under Mr Toh’s directorship, the Choir made history as the first

neighbourhood school choir to clinch Gold in the demanding Singapore Youth Festival (SYF)

Choral Competition in 1997. Since then, the Choir continues to attain Gold at SYF in 1999,

2003, and 2005, the prestigious Gold (with Honours) award in 2007, 2009 and 2011 at the

SYF and the Distinction award at the 2013, 2015 and 2017 Singapore Youth Festivals.

The inaugural overseas tour to Sydney in 1996 was featured in Straits Times, a first among

the neighbourhood school then. The past overseas tour to London & Paris (1998), New

Zealand (2000), Prague (2003), Czech Republic-Poland-Austria (2005), Bratislava -Slovakia

(2007), Czech Republic-Germany (2009), Czech Republic-Austria (2010), Czech Republic-

Poland-Hungary (2011) and Czech Republic-Austria-Germany (2013) provided invaluable

exposure to our students. In the last six overseas tours, the Choir also represented Singapore

in international festivals and received 7 gold awards and 5 special prizes. The most recent

awards were obtained in December 2013 at the 14th International Competition Festival of

Christmas Music in Prague, where the young team won the Festival Laureate, placed 1st with

a Gold in the Children's category and won 2 special awards (Conductor's Prize and

for Dramaturgy).

What does the Choir programme promise?

We believe in character building and leadership training through musical pursuits. Many of

our students have benefited from past activities and tours, and are now assuming leadership

roles in various areas within the school. They have become better people through the

discipline required in choir and teamwork activities. The Choir does a lot more than just singing

too and each member will find in us a strong community and team to be part of.

The Dunman Guitar Ensemble, led by instructor Mr Kevin Yeo, clinched the Gold with Honours

award in 11 and the Certificate of Distinction in the Singapore Youth Festivals in 2013 and 2017

respectively. The ensemble also clinched the Certificate of Accomplishment in the Singapore Youth

Festival in 2015. Being one of the more prominent and prestigious performing arts CCA in the school,

the ensemble has often been invited to perform for school events & even public events - to which,

audiences thoroughly enjoy. In 2012, the Guitar Ensemble even had the chance to travel to Melbourne,

Australia, to perform and learn from likewise musicians. This trip not only provided members with a

fun & interesting learning experience, but also gave them a greater chance to bond with one another.

The ensemble also had opportunities to perform at the Esplanade Concourse in November 2014 and

July 2016. They have also participated in the SYF 2017 Virtual Music Ensemble and was featured in the

video that was presented during the SYF 2017 Celebrations Festival Concert from 30 June to 1 July

2017.

The lively and enthusiastic atmosphere of the ensemble in each practice never fails to bring a

smile to every one of the members' faces, as they laugh, learn and enjoy the music together.

In addition, there is a wide variety of guitars used in the ensemble, such as the Soprano, Alto, Alto

Cembalo, Prime, Bass, Contrabass and even the Guitarron! These guitars produce very different

sounds, which widen the orchestral range of the songs produced by the Ensemble, and allow them to

produce much more refined and interesting music. This is definitely a unique feature of Dunman's

Guitar Ensemble, as not every school has such a privilege.

Practice is held every week on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3-6pm, where new songs are

frequently being introduced to the students, so they are always learning new pieces, and will never

Page 7: Content · 2018-01-08 · by Yasushi Akutagawa and The Violin Concerto in A Minor BWV 1041 Movement 1. Allegro Moderato by Johann Sebastian Bach. The Dunman Guitar Ensemble, which

get bored of old ones. Different genres of songs are played by the ensemble, from classical pieces such

as ‘Symphony No. 1’ by Felix Mendelssohn to folk pieces such as ‘Yagibushi’, a Japanese Folk Song by

Masaaki Hayakawa and even modern pop pieces like “Haru Haru”, "Little Talks" and "Safe & Sound".

These songs relate very much to the members and they definitely enjoy playing it as well. In recent

years, we have extended our repertoire to include more musically demanding pieces such as Triptyque

by Yasushi Akutagawa and The Violin Concerto in A Minor BWV 1041 Movement 1. Allegro Moderato

by Johann Sebastian Bach.

The Dunman Guitar Ensemble, which encompasses of fun and valuable learning opportunities

allows one to not only benefit from it, but will definitely create unforgettable memories in one’s

secondary school experience as well!

Dunman Concert Band has always been the distinguished CCA in the history of our school.

Founded in 1969, it consists of 3 instrumental groups, namely the percussion, woodwinds

and brasses.

We strongly believe that every child has the ability to learn how to play an instrument, can

learn to work well with others as a team, and can learn to contribute towards the success of

the Band. We consistently strive for excellence in all we do and we operate within an

environment of deeply engrained values: Discipline, Dedication and Teamwork. Along with

these values, the students develop important life skills of leadership and responsibility.

Our instructor and tutor, Mr Lim Meng Keh and Ms Samantha Chong, have developed a

structured training programme based on their rich background and extensive teaching and

conducting experience with various organizations. Teachers and instructors strive to work

together to bring the CCA and its members to greater heights in terms of character

development and achievement.

Our practice is held twice a week at the Music Room from 230pm to 4pm for our Junior Band

and from 4pm to 615pm for main band. Additional Saturday practices may be scheduled,

especially during the SYF years. Our students have many opportunities to perform internally

and externally to showcase their talent and potential.

We are confident that under the “One For ALL, All For One” mentality and with the guidance

from our instructors, coupled with DETERMINATION and DILIGENCE, the Band will continue

to bring glory to Dunman in the years ahead.

Our CCA’s goal is to develop disciplined and daring athletes, imbued with a

strong sense of duty to the team. They will play their competitions with a

tenacious determination for winning and clear discernment in fair play and

sportsmanship. We train 3 times a week, during which players are engaged in

physical training and realistic match plays.

Both the B & C Division Boys took part in the East Zone Inter-school Badminton

Championships. Our C Division Boys had been placed in the top eight positions

in the East Zone Championships. They also participated in external competitions

such as the Wee Kim Wee Badminton Tournament.

Basketball

For the past decade, the Dunman Secondary Basketball CCA has established itself to be a

major contender for the zonal and national competitions every year. In 2009, our first batch of

‘B’ division girls, against all odds, cliched our first ever National title. Since then, our teams

have achieved an astonishing 20 National titles (8 National champions, 5 National runners –

up, 4 2nd runners – up and 3 3rd runners – up).

The rise of Dunman Basketball from its humble beginnings coincides with the upgrading of

our sports facilities during PRIME in 2007. During the period of upgrading, our teams trained

at outdoor neighbourhood basketball courts or the basketball courts in community centres.

This went on for a full 18 months until our ISH was completed, that we were able to train

indoors for the first time. This period tested the resilience of the entire team.

Currently we have a total strength of almost 70 students within four divisions. With a five

teachers in-charge and two well established coaches, students of Dunman Basketball are

nurtured to unleashed their talents, learn the importance of camaraderie, and work to become

an all rounded student athlete.

Our students come from various ethnic groups (Chinese, Malay, Indian, Eurasian and Filipino)

and there is strong cohesion and respect among the members within the teams. The close

bonds and respect for one another were formed through the training sessions and

competitions. In addition, players also learn the importance of good sportsmanship, discipline,

and fair play.

The consistent performances from the various groups from Dunman Basketball have

established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the nationwide schools basketball scene!

We will continue to strive hard for zonal and national competitions in 2018.

considerate and responsible individuals through team trainings and

competitions. In the year 2017, our ‘B’ & ‘C’

Division Boys participated in the annual East Zone Table-Tennis Tournament

held at Loyang Secondary School. It was on this competition ground that our

Dunman Team exhibited team spirit, perseverance and excellence as we pit our

skills against other school players.

The Dunman table tennis team also

participated enthusiastically in friendly

Dunman’s Volleyball provides a vibrant and enriching CCA experience for our students. We develop

our students holistically by encouraging our players to step out of their comfort zone and pursue

excellence in all that they do. Trainings are held 3 times a week, are challenging and fulfilling. We are

proud to see our students displaying discipline and determination to overcome obstacles, and grow

together as a team.

Our ‘B’ Division Boys’ and Girls’ teams are led by Mr Shen Ke Qin, an ex-National Team player for China

& Singapore. Mr Shen brings with him a wealth of experience from his time as a player & coach from

1981 to 1993. Over the years, he has continually adapted and refined his coaching approach. At the

same time, he places strong emphasis on the character development of our players. Mr Shen has

consistently guided our ‘B’ Division teams to success, cementing our position as a major contender in

the volleyball arena.

Our ‘C’ Division Boys and ‘C’ Division Girls team are helmed by Mdm Chen Yi Yi, an ex-Shanghai State

Team player from 1981 to 1985. The teams have made tremendous strides under her professional

guidance and she has since led our ‘C’ Division girls to 6 East Zone titles, after making our maiden

appearance in the Girls competition in 2008.

Through their participation in friendly matches and the National School competitions, our students

have ample opportunities to pit their skills amongst the best in Singapore. The hard work and effort

by the students, coupled with the guidance by our teachers and coaches, will continue to bring

Dunman Volleyball to greater heights.

Established in 1999, Dunman NCC Air aims to instill in our cadets pride and honor. We aim to do our best in all our endeavors, be it in competitions or involving our cadets in enriching activities.

In 2017, we received our 15th consecutive Gold Award for our performance in 2016 in the Best Unit Competition (BUC). We thank our cadets for their dedication and perseverance in training, and also the parents and teachers of our cadets for their continuous support.

NCC Air offers a variety of activities, such as hands-on training at the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) fighter and helicopter simulator centres, military plane joyrides, SAR-21 shooting, aeromodelling, gold and platinum wing courses, Outward Bound Brunei and airbase visits. In addition, there are also camps such as Camp Forge, Camp Steel and Senior Specialist Leaders’ Camp. The list goes on. Our cadets also get the opportunity to embark on events such as Army Open House visit to enhance their knowledge on Total Defence. These numerous activities act as a platform through which our cadets are exposed to the various aspects of the RSAF and the military, in the hope that some will be inspired to reach for the skies to serve as pilots in the RSAF. These activities also enable our cadets to learn and grow into responsible, knowledgeable and well-rounded leaders. As a uniformed group, drills form an integral part of our training. This is where respect, discipline, perseverance and sheer grit are inculcated into our cadets. In this aspect, we are proud to share that our cadets are well-trained and play an important part in various school parades. This year, two of our cadets, Jordell of 3C and Yhuva of 3G, persevered through the tough trainings and were selected to be part of the NCC Contingent in the 52nd National Day Parade held at the Marina Bay Floating Platform. Our training is however not limited to the “AIR” syllabus. Our cadets play different sports such as soccer, basketball, combat laser tag and even sport-climbing during training to have fun while at the same time building trust, teamwork and camaraderie between themselves. With growing support from the RSAF, we will continue to seek new avenues to enrich the NCC Air experience of our cadets and to identify and encourage the next budding pilot in our midst.

NCC Land

Dunman Secondary School NCC Land Unit has always seek to develop our cadets in

a holistic manner and to groom them to be future leaders who shows resilience,

responsibility and commitment to the country. The NCC core values have always been

a cornerstone of our unit. We believe strongly in cultivating these values into our

cadets through their weekly trainings and drills as well as the various activities that

they carry out throughout the year. This includes the events that the cadets participate

each year such as Total Defence Day, Prize Giving Day and National Day Observance

Ceremony.

The sense of camaraderie and trust within the unit spurs us to strive for greater heights.

The unit has become a second family to many of the cadets and through their

involvement, they have learnt to be more disciplined, discerning and daring to take up

new challenges and overcome difficulties together as one unit.

We provide ample opportunities for the cadets to take responsibility of their own

learning and training at the same time a chance for them to lead their peers. This is

evident in our regular physical trainings and precision drills as well as their annual

camp where the cadet leaders are given roles to conduct the activities. They are

encouraged to be independent and initiated leaders with the teachers as chaperones

for assistance.

This year, the NCC Land was the Guard of Honour contingent for the annual prize

giving day parade. It was led by parade commander Staff Sergeant Yogesh

Thanabalan. and parade RSM Staff Sergeant Karl. The parade successfully started

the school event.

Our Freestyle Drill Squad (FSD) paraticipated in the annual NCC FSD competition for

the first time and clinched the third prize for the east district and qualified to be a finalist

for the overall finals for all districts. They had invested hard work, perseverance and

hours of training and practice to perfect their execution.

Today, as much as we focus on the physical strength of our cadets, the unit also aims

to inculcate compassion and care in our cadets in a bid to develop them as holistic

individuals. Our activities that we carry out will be closely planned to ensure that our

aims are met and are in line with NCC core values and key thrusts.

active citizens and community leaders, by working in partnership with the Singapore

Police Force to fight crime and keep Singapore safe.

The VISION of the National Police Cadet Corps is To become the best youth organisation

in Singapore, one that actively helps to make Singapore the safest place in the world.”

The Dunman National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) made its mark on several fronts. Among

them, we have been awarded Gold in the annual Unit Overall Proficiency Awards for our

performance in 2015. This is an affirmation to the hard work put in by both the cadets and

the teachers, and we would like to thank all for their dedication and perseverance in training.

NPCC in Dunman serves as a platform for students to be moulded to become leaders through

opportunities to lead in various events and activities. Let us take a look at some of the key

activities we did in the year 2017!

Annual Unit Camp

The NPCC Annual Unit Camp 2017 held in March was a huge success where it had strengthened the

camaraderie among the cadets in the unit through various activities. These activities included a hike

to Pasir Ris Park which we all had fun. Friendship was forged not only among the present cadets, but

also with the alumni who returned to the unit to help out as instructors for the camp.

Unit Enrichment Programmes – Rock climbing, Dragonboating and 1-Star Kayaking

Other than the usual camps and drills, we were also involved in sports enrichment activities such as rock climbing, dragonboating and kayaking

Introduction

Dunman Red Cross Youth (RCY) is part of Singapore Red Cross Society. It is a unique uniformed-

group made up by discerning individuals who have chosen to make their secondary school life

purposeful by engaging the community through first aid related services.

Dunman Red Cross provides a conducive environment for Dunmanites to be nurtured as change

makers who serve and lead with good character. Dunmanites will learn to make discerning

decisions, be disciplined in everything they do and discharge their duties with the spirit of excellence

as a Red Cross Youth cadet.

With “Serving Humanity, Saving Lives” as our motto, we aim to develop our cadets as servant

leaders by serving others with the skills that they acquire through the CCA activities.

Our primary focuses in our training curriculum are in first aid and disaster management skills. To

develop our cadets holistically, the CCA activities include orienteering, team-building games, foot-

drill sessions, outdoor activities and Values-In-Action (VIA) opportunities both locally and overseas.

Students will also have the opportunities to participate in inter-school competitions and camps

organised by the Red Cross HQ.

Dunman Red Cross Youth had been awarded Community Service Award (Gold) since 2011 and

Excellence Unit Award (Gold) in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016 and (Silver) in 2012 and 2014. These

affirm the effectiveness of our cadet training programme.

badges activities that the Dunman Dove Scouts enjoyed in 2017.

The Dunman Dove Scouts Unit had the opportunity to participate in various jamborees overseas. We

had participated in Jamborees such as in Thailand (2014), Japan (2015) and Korea (2016) for cultural

exchange and indeed an eye-opening experience for us.

The enthusiasm and dedication of the Dunman Dove Scout Unit has earned them the GOLD award in

the Frank Cooper Sands Award (FCSA) for seven consecutive years since 2010 and a Pennant Award

in 2015.

Let’s join us for another new adventure and exciting 2018, bringing our Dunman Dove Scout Unit to

Report: Dunman Infocomm Club (DICC) strives to enrich the IT skills of its

members through a progression of trainings, courses, workshops,

seminars and competitions. We focus on several areas of

development, namely Multimedia (Videography and Photography),

Robotics, Mobile Apps Development and Public Address (PA). DICC

has its own MacLab. Our MacLab is equipped with state of the art

iMacs. Here, students and teachers are trained in developing

applications for iOS platform devices such as iPhone, iPod and iPad.

Apart from providing PA and multimedia support in school events,

DICC works closely with external partners (Ministry Of Education

and North East Community Development Council) to expose

everyone in Dunman to new emerging technologies through

workshops and seminars.

DICC participates in numerous competitions throughout the year,

such as the I.Code Competition, Inter-School Robotics Challenge

and the Singapore Games Creation Competition. These

competitions aimed to heighten IT awareness; encourage creativity

and innovation in IT. PA students had an enriching learning journey

to a professional recording studio where they had the opportunity to

have hands-on experience with the equipment in a professional

recording studio.

Through these competitions, there were valuable coaching

opportunities amongst the students, teachers and the trainers. Our

students developed stronger team spirit as they come together to

interact, problem solve, collaborate and apply their IT skills to be

creators of technology.

We believe in bonding amongst members. This is important as most

training is carried out in teams, so members need to be good team

members.
