What is Changing?
Changes in Society
• People have more spending power
• They are willing to pay for what they want to consume• They are willing to pay for devices
• People are travelling more (getting exposed to what other people have in other countries/elsewhere)
• People now understand what they want to consume
• People are more educated
• People are more choosy (more discerning) and exercise more control over what and how they consume
• People spend less time at home and more time on the move
• People no longer congregate around the traditional TV set in the house• People tend to own mobile devices which are seen to be a necessity rather than luxury
• People spend more time at work (increasingly more competitive society)
• People spend less time at home• People tend to consume at their convenience
• There is an increase in people using the public transport
• People consume within the state of mobility
• There is an increase in the number of foreigners
• Demand for foreign content is high
Changes in Technology
• Computers are becoming more powerful
• Computers are becoming cheaper
• Computers are becoming more accessible
• Encoding technology is becoming better
• Compression technology is becoming better
• Internet is reaching more and more people
• Internet is getting faster and faster
• Telecommunication technology is improving
• Mobile devices are becoming fashionable
• Mobile devices are becoming smarter
Changes in Technology
Mean Opinion Score
Result of visual measure based on a group of controlled viewing (participants and sessions)
Peak Signal To Noise Ratio
Measured using a known algorithm developed by a consortium of video measurement test equipment/product
So What?
• People still love the Television
• People still need the BIG SCREEN – you still watch your favorite movies on a 50’ flat-screen TV set
• We are seeing more on-demand control
• Navigation and search is key for many people
• Niche content
• Fresh content
• Localised content
• Content suitable for all devices
• Basically… what people want, when they want it, how they want it…..
So What Does Broadcasters Need to Do?
What broadcasters have to do?
• Content is still king!• So keep generating good content• Content must take into account various platforms (terrestrial, mobile, on-line etc)
• keep generating revenue
• Look at new revenue streams
• Keep operating cost low
• Traditional advertising revenue is less
• Creative advertising - Sponsored content• Creative advertising - Augmented reality
• Venture into Pay-TV
• Collaboration with platform providers e.g. TELCO’s (the more people watch, the more they use internet)
• Re-purpose archived content – content must be tailored for specific platforms
• Invest in ‘data analytics’ – understanding your viewers is important
• Social networking is a tool for broadcasters to get into the psyche of the viewer• People used to enjoy talking about what they like/hate to watch around the home TV set• Now, that have exploded into the whole world and entire communities talk about what they watch
The Great Challenge….
Broadcaster Challenges
... Understanding the audience …
• Business/Data analytics• This is becoming more and more essential in todays business of service provision
• Consumption patterns• Millenials, Gen X, Gen Y and Gen Z – behavioral characteristics
• Spending behavior• Based on analytics, what are people willing to pay for and how much
• Types of engagement• Target devices• Time of day (lifestyle)• Lifestyle
• PIRACY• The proliferation of Android services which ‘pirates’ ALL contents from legitimate sources

Changing viewer habits
Increasing production costs
…..
• Technical operations staff can put the station at ransom.
• Staff doing the same thing for many years – now earning many times more than what they used to.
• Disconnect between the management and operational staff
• Need change agents who understand both operations and management aspects of the business
Dangers to look out for (a reminder to management team).

Signal delivery network
Opportunities (Digital TV)
• Able to introduce new channels without reconfiguring network.
• Better picture quality
• Better audio quality
• May offer interactive services (Electronic Program Guide, Catch-up TV, close captioning, multiple language etc)
• May include mobile services
• May include FM radio
Challenges (Digital TV)
• Simulcast period is very challenging from a technical standpoint
• Issue of server space (2 versions of videos)• Issue of SD vs HD (aspect ratio)
• More channels means higher content cost
• Syndication contract may cost more to include multiple platforms• Issue of Digital Right Management (DRM)
• Improved user experience
• Interactivity means more complexity for backend operations
• Initial cost offered by MYTV is far too high (not sustainable)
• Employee ‘mindset’ changes….
